The Omnipresent Force

Chapter 7: Arcanist

The bidding war continued, tension thick in the air as the auction room buzzed with anticipation. Elliot's eyes remained locked on the silver pen, now elevated by the host's hand, gleaming under the dim light. The mysterious buyer across the room shifted slightly, the air of secrecy surrounding him as he locked eyes with Elliot. The starting price of 150 pounds had escalated quickly—now, the bidding hovered at 180 pounds.

The silent duel between Elliot and the stranger continued in increments of 10 pounds, each bid more decisive than the last.

"190 pounds," Elliot called, his voice steady.

The mysterious man adjusted his posture slightly, his hands clenched on his drink. Elliot could see the brief flicker of hesitation in his eyes, the faintest shift in his expression. Something about that hesitation told Elliot this could be his moment.

With a calculated glance, Elliot raised his hand once more.

"200 pounds."

The room held its breath.

The host paused, his gaze flicking between the two men, before giving a sharp nod.

"Sold! To the gentleman with the winning bid!"

Elliot smirked, a rush of triumph flooding through him as he was handed the silver pen. It was small in his palm, unassuming, yet to him, it held immense weight.

He placed the 200 pounds into the host's hand, exchanging the funds for the pen. As soon as he did, a sharp notification rang in his mind.

[System Notification: High-level connection item detected. Would you like to connect to the Sefirah Castle?]

The message was clear, and the gravity of the situation sank in. Sefirah Castle was no small matter—it was a place of mystery and power, a locus of Beyonder significance. The connection to it meant exposure to forces Elliot had yet to fully understand.

His thoughts raced. This was not the time. Not here, not in this gathering. He was still surrounded by unknowns, by people whose intentions he couldn't quite read. To connect now might lead to unwanted attention.

Elliot clenched his fist around the pen, the cool metal pressing against his palm. He wasn't ready to confront the Castle yet, not without more preparation.

"I decline," Elliot murmured inwardly.

He placed the pen into his inventory for safekeeping. The system accepted his decision with a small chime, the notification disappearing.

I'll try again when I'm somewhere safer. A powerful item like this could be useful, but I can't risk it here.

As soon as the pen was securely tucked away in his inventory, Elliot turned his attention back to the auction. The host was already showcasing another item, a crystal resting in the spotlight.

"This," the host announced, "is simply a decorative piece. A crystal that can be made into jewelry. No mystical properties, nothing out of the ordinary."

Elliot's gaze sharpened as his thoughts whirled. Decorative, the host said? It didn't feel right. Something about the way the crystal shimmered under the light intrigued him.

Observation.

As soon as he activated the skill, the world around the crystal sharpened, the details flooding his vision.

Then, as if triggered by the revelation, a new system message appeared:

NEW QUEST: Path to Power

Obtain 10 milliliters of Etherlight Crystal Essence

Reward: Sequence 9 Potion Recipe

Failure Penalty: -50 Health

Do you accept this quest?

Elliot's heart skipped a beat. A Sequence 9 potion recipe? That could be invaluable, but the penalty for failure was steep. The fact that the system didn't mince words, warning him of such a severe punishment, weighed heavily on his mind.

Sequence 9... I've searched for a formula for one of those before. It's a potent concoction, something that can elevate my standing as a Beyonder, but... 50 HP loss? That's not a light risk.

He glanced at the crystal again. It wasn't much to look at, but its aura felt different. There was a power to it, and now, with the quest issued, the choice before him had become even more pressing. It was a rare opportunity, one that might not come around again soon.

Elliot took a deep breath, considering his options. The quest was risky, but the reward—especially in a place like this, surrounded by artifacts and Beyonders—was worth it. Finding a Sequence 9 potion recipe would give him a valuable edge in the dangerous game he was playing. And while 50 HP was a significant cost, he had to take risks if he wanted to survive in this world.

I've faced worse odds before. I can handle this. I'll accept the quest.

Elliot raised his hand without hesitation.

"I bid 15 pounds," he called out, his voice firm.

The host's eyebrow raised, but he gave a quick nod. The bidding was over, and the crystal was his.

It was delivered to him promptly, and he paid the host the 15 pounds without delay. As soon as the crystal was in his hands, another system notification popped up:

QUEST COMPLETE: Path to Power

Reward: Sequence 9 Potion Recipe unlocked.

Elliot's mind raced as he held the small crystal. The quest was complete and the formula was directly downloaded into his mind, but as he went over the formula, an unsettling thought crossed his mind.

[Sequence 9: Arcanist]

Main Ingredients

10 milliliters of Etherlight Crystal Essence

30 grams of Manaweave Ore Dust

Supplementary Ingredients

15 drops of Phantom Lilac Extract

 5 Whisperbloom Leaves

 2 grams of Starshade Pollen

8 grams of Emberthorn Ash Powder.

Preparation Instructions

Combine the Etherlight Crystal Essence and Phantom Lilac Extract in a cauldron. Swirl gently until the liquid shimmers.

Gradually add the Manaweave Ore Dust and Starshade Pollen while stirring with a silver rod. Ensure no clumps form.

Crush the Whisperbloom Leaves into a fine paste and mix them into the potion. The mixture should turn a deep violet hue.

Sprinkle the Emberthorn Ash Powder evenly across the surface of the liquid. Allow it to settle for two minutes. Observe as the liquid absorbs its energy, glowing faintly.

He had unlocked a Sequence 9 potion recipe, but the name... It meant nothing to him.

Arcanist.

He frowned, his brow furrowing. He'd studied all 22 sequences, and Arcanist was unfamiliar. He had no idea what it meant, nor had he heard of any potion or formula associated with it.

I know all the sequences... so why haven't I heard of this one?

The crystal in his hand seemed to glow faintly, almost as if reacting to the discovery. He closed his eyes for a moment, trying to recall any hidden knowledge he might have missed, any forgotten corner of his mind where the answer might lie. But nothing came to him. The Sequence 9 recipe was foreign.

The host was already moving on to the next item, but Elliot couldn't help but feel unsettled. He'd gained something valuable, yes, but there were more questions now than answers. And that name—Arcanist—lingered in his mind like a whisper.

He placed the crystal in his inventory with the pen, making sure both were secure. As he did, he couldn't shake the feeling that something larger was at play here, something he was still far from understanding.

For now, though, the auction continued, and Elliot had to remain focused. He would unravel the mysteries when he had the chance. But for the moment, he couldn't afford to be distracted by an unknown recipe—he had more pressing matters to attend to.
