The Oath of the Moonlight

Chapter 9: 9. The Battle with the Dragon

The deafening roar of the dragon reverberated through the mountains, sending a tremor of fear down Eileen's spine. She tightened her grip on the Crystal of Light, its familiar warmth offering a small measure of comfort in the face of the impending danger. Kyle's wings twitched restlessly, ready to launch him into the air at a moment's notice, while Ryan crouched low, his muscles coiled like a spring, his eyes fixed on the source of the sound.

"Remember, we have to work together," Kyle said, his voice low but steady. "The dragon is powerful, but we have our own strengths. Eileen, you focus on using the crystal's power to weaken it. Ryan, you look for an opening to attack from the ground. And I'll try to draw its attention away."

Eileen nodded, taking a deep breath to steady her nerves. "I'm ready," she said, her voice more confident than she felt.

The dragon roared again, and this time, a column of fire shot into the sky. The heat was intense, even from a distance, and Eileen could feel the hairs on her arms singeing. "There!" Kyle shouted, pointing to a large, dark shape emerging from the mist - shrouded mountainside.

The dragon was massive, its scales glinting like polished black armor in the dim light. Its eyes were two glowing orbs of red, and its long, sinuous tail whipped back and forth, sending boulders crashing down the mountainside. As it approached, the ground shook with each thunderous step.

Kyle launched himself into the air, his wings beating powerfully. He flew towards the dragon, his hands outstretched, ready to unleash a blast of energy. The dragon saw him coming and let out a roar. It opened its massive jaws and spat a stream of fire towards Kyle.

Kyle veered to the side, narrowly avoiding the flames. He sent a blast of energy towards the dragon, but it bounced off the creature's scales, having no effect. "Its scales are too tough!" he shouted.

Ryan, taking advantage of the dragon's distraction, charged towards it. He let out a howl, his claws extended. The dragon turned its head towards him, its eyes narrowing. It swiped at Ryan with its massive paw, but Ryan was too quick. He dodged the attack and jumped onto the dragon's leg, climbing up its body.

The dragon let out a furious roar and tried to shake Ryan off. It twisted and turned, its tail lashing out. Ryan clung on tightly, his claws digging into the dragon's scales. He reached the dragon's neck and sank his teeth into it.

The dragon let out a screech of pain and reared up on its hind legs. Ryan lost his grip and fell to the ground. But he quickly got back up, his eyes filled with determination.

Eileen, meanwhile, was focused on the Crystal of Light. She closed her eyes and concentrated, trying to channel its power. She could feel the energy coursing through her body, but it was wild and untamed. She took a deep breath and focused on the dragon, visualizing a shield of light around it, one that would weaken its defenses.

Suddenly, a beam of light shot out from the crystal, hitting the dragon. The dragon let out a roar of pain, and its scales seemed to dim slightly. "It's working!" Eileen shouted.

Kyle, seeing his chance, flew towards the dragon again. He sent a series of powerful blasts of energy towards the creature. This time, the blasts hit their mark, and the dragon let out a series of roars.

The dragon, enraged, turned its attention back to Eileen. It charged towards her, its eyes fixed on the Crystal of Light. Eileen stood her ground, her eyes filled with determination. She raised the crystal in front of her, and a shield of light formed around her.

The dragon crashed into the shield, but it couldn't break through. It let out a frustrated roar and tried again, but the shield held firm. Eileen, feeling the strain of maintaining the shield, gritted her teeth and focused all of her energy on it.

Ryan, seeing Eileen in danger, charged towards the dragon. He jumped onto its back and began to attack it with his claws. The dragon thrashed around, trying to throw him off. But Ryan held on, his attacks growing more fierce.

Kyle, taking advantage of the dragon's distraction, flew towards it. He aimed a powerful blast of energy at the dragon's eyes. The blast hit its mark, and the dragon let out a scream of pain. It stumbled backwards, its eyes now glowing a dim red.

Eileen, seeing an opening, focused all of her energy on the Crystal of Light. She sent a powerful blast of energy towards the dragon, hitting it in the chest. The dragon let out a final, agonized roar and fell to the ground, defeated.

Eileen, Kyle, and Ryan stood there, their chests heaving, the battle over. They looked at each other, a mixture of relief and pride on their faces. "We did it," Eileen said, her voice filled with wonder.

Kyle landed next to her, a tired smile on his face. "Yes, we did. But we couldn't have done it without you, Eileen. Your power with the crystal was the key."

Ryan walked over to them, a satisfied grin on his face. "Well, that was one hell of a fight. But we're not done yet. We still need to find the Amulet of Protection."

They made their way towards the cave where the amulet was supposed to be hidden. The entrance was large and dark, and a strange, glowing light emanated from within. Eileen, Kyle, and Ryan exchanged a look and then stepped inside.

The cave was filled with strange, glowing crystals and ancient - looking artifacts. In the center of the cave, on a pedestal, was the Amulet of Protection. It was a large, circular pendant, made of a strange, iridescent metal. A large, blue gemstone was set in the center, and it seemed to pulsate with a soft, blue light.

Eileen walked over to the pedestal and picked up the amulet. As soon as she touched it, a surge of energy coursed through her body. She could feel the power of the amulet, a protective force that seemed to wrap around her.

Just then, a voice echoed through the cave. "You think it's that easy? The amulet is mine!"

They turned to see a figure emerging from the shadows. It was a sorcerer, his eyes glowing with a dark, purple light. He was dressed in a long, black robe, and his hands were raised, ready to attack.

"Who are you?" Kyle demanded.

The sorcerer laughed, a cold, mocking sound. "I am Malachi, a servant of the Shadow Lord. And you have just made a big mistake."

With that, Malachi launched a blast of dark energy towards them. Eileen, Kyle, and Ryan quickly scattered, avoiding the blast. The battle for the Amulet of Protection was far from over, and Eileen knew that they were in for another fight. But she was ready. With the Crystal of Light and the Amulet of Protection in her possession, she was determined to defeat the Shadow Lord and save the supernatural world.
