The Mistress Is Reborn As The Fiancée

Chapter 16: She Smelled A Rat

Ma-Ri's perfectly manicured nails tapped a frantic rhythm on the polished surface of her vanity. The news of Noelle's unequivocal rejection of Evan had sent a ripple of panic through her carefully constructed world. This was not just some lovers' spat; this was a full-blown declaration of independence, and it threatened to unravel everything that her family had been waiting for.

Her father, a man of formidable craving for power and even more formidable temper, would be incandescent with rage if he discovered that his carefully laid plans were crumbling. He had invested heavily in Evan, seeing him as the key to solidifying their family's influence. Noelle's defiance was a direct challenge to his authority, and Ma-Ri knew she was the one who would bear the brunt of Daddy dearest's wrath.

"This is a disaster," she muttered, her voice laced with frustration. She had to act, and she had to act fast. She couldn't afford to wait for her father to discover the situation; she had to take control, to salvage what she could.

Her mind raced, trying to piece together the puzzle. What had changed? What had driven Noelle to such a drastic decision? She suspected another man, but who? And why now?

The name Caine Weston surfaced in her mind. May's cryptic message about Noelle's meeting with him at the party suddenly seemed significant. She could not ignore the possibility that he was involved.

She grabbed her purse, her movements decisive. "I need answers," she muttered, her eyes narrowing with determination. She could not afford to leave any stone unturned.

Caine's office, usually a haven of calm, crackled with an undercurrent of tension as Ma-Ri breezed in, her smile radiating an almost unsettling charm. She knew how to play this game; she knew how to use her allure to extract the information she needed.

"Caine, darling," she purred, her voice laced with a playful intimacy, "it has been ages, you don't even call me and check up on me." She pouted.

Caine smiled, his perfect white teeth even brighter against the brilliant tan of his skin. He was flattered by Ma-Ri's presence in his office. It seemed that the Ryu girls could not get enough of him and he was willing to satisfy them… well, except apparently Noelle was off bounds.

"I have been overwhelmed with work, Ma-Ri." Caine leaned closer flirtatiously . "But since you are here now, I can check up on you."

Ma-Ri batted her eyelashes at him. "I hear you have been hanging out with my cousin," she said, I was just wondering… what did you and Noelle have to discuss at the party?"

Caine's expression went from flirtatious to guarded, his eyes flickering with a hint of unease. He remembered the chilling warning he had received, the veiled threat against revealing anything he had discussed with Noelle. He could not afford to take any risks.

"It was a private conversation, Ma-Ri," he said, his voice clipped and formal. "I'm afraid I can't discuss it."

Ma-Ri's smile faltered slightly, a flicker of annoyance crossing her features at Caine's sudden change. She leaned forward, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Don't be like that, Caine," she said, her voice laced with a hint of petulance. "We are friends, aren't we?"

She reached out and placed a hand on his arm, her touch sending a shiver down his spine. "You know that you can trust me," she whispered, her voice soft and seductive. "No one has to know what we discuss in here."

Caine's resolve wavered momentarily. He felt a surge of desire, a longing to confide in her, to trust her. But the memory of the warning, the fear of the consequences, held him back. After all, no one was supposed to know about the things he had done in secret but still, those things had been used to blackmail him. Who knew who was watching and listening?

"I'm sorry, Ma-Ri," he said, his voice strained and regretful. Ma-Ri might be hot and high on his list but he could not take that risk even for her. "I can't."

Ma-Ri's smile vanished, replaced by a look of frustration. She stood up abruptly, her movements sharp and abrupt. "Fine," she said, her voice laced with a hint of anger. "If you want to be like that and don't want to talk, then I will leave."

She stormed out of the office, her heels clicking sharply against the polished floor. She paused in the hallway, her eyes narrowing with suspicion. Caine's evasiveness was too obvious, too deliberate. He was hiding something.

"There is something going on," she muttered, her voice laced with a hint of menace. "And I'm going to find out what it is."

She smelled a rat, a huge one, but it was hiding in the shadows. She needed to bring it into the light, to expose the truth. She had to find out who Noelle was seeing.

She knew that time was of the essence. The longer Noelle remained defiant, the greater the risk of her father discovering the situation. She had to act quickly, to find the source of Noelle's newfound independence and cut it off. It was important that Noelle marry Evan and keep the shares close to them. If she married someone else, it would be hard to convince them to hand over the shares.

She decided to start by revisiting May's information. May always had her ear to the ground and knew what was going on. If anyone knew, it would be May.

She also knew that she could not just ask around. She could not let anyone know that she was concerned. She had to be subtle and cunning.

She drove to a high end restaurant and called May to meet her there. May was always ready for a free meal.

She had to find out the man. She had to find out what was going on. And she had to do it before it was too late.
