Chapter 6: The Collapse of the Loop
My hand slowly pressed down on the red button.
In an instant, the lights inside the towering structure shut off completely. The only illumination came from the spinning red warning lights that cast ominous shadows across the walls. A piercing alarm echoed through the space, and the screens around me flickered, their once-coherent code now a chaotic mess. Massive cracks began to spread across the walls as though the tower itself was tearing apart.
"You actually chose red." The Administrator stood by the console, her expression unreadable. "It seems you're not afraid to break free of the rules entirely."
"This isn't about rules," I said, my voice low but trembling slightly. "It's about the fact that they never intended to give me freedom in the first place."
She said nothing more but walked to another console, her fingers moving deftly across the surface. The alarm grew louder, and the cracks in the structure widened.
"What's going to happen now?" I asked nervously.
"The core of the loop is being unlocked," she said calmly, though her voice carried an undertone of urgency. "But the League won't let us succeed without resistance. You need to leave this place and find the true control point."
"The true control point?" I frowned. "Isn't Layer Zero the control center?"
"No. It's merely one part of the loop. The true control lies in the League's central system—the Intelligence Core," she said, turning to look at me. "That's where you can destroy the loop completely."
"And what about you?" I pressed.
Her lips curled into a faint, almost bitter smile. "My role is done. Now it's your turn."
Before I could respond, the entire tower began to quake violently. A blinding white light erupted from the floor, breaking through the cracks and consuming the space. I felt the ground beneath me give way as gravity itself seemed to collapse. My body was pulled into the light, and my consciousness faded into nothingness.
When I woke up, I was lying in a vast, featureless white space. The boundaries of this place were invisible, as though it stretched into infinity. Streams of data floated in mid-air, gently undulating like living currents.
"Mike Dean, welcome to the Intelligence Core."
The system's voice rang out, colder and more oppressive than ever before.
"The Intelligence Core?" I muttered, struggling to push myself upright. "Is this where the loop is controlled?"
"Yes," the system replied. A translucent screen appeared in the air, displaying an overwhelming cascade of data and task logs scrolling at a blinding speed. "This is the origin of the loop and the end point of the trials. But by pressing the red button, you've disrupted the equilibrium."
"Equilibrium?" I scoffed. "You manipulated me at every step, trapped me in unsolvable riddles, and now you want to talk about balance?"
"You fail to understand our purpose," the system responded icily. "The loop exists to select those most capable of wielding the power of wisdom. By breaking it, you've thrown everything into chaos."
"You weren't selecting for wisdom," I retorted, glaring at the screen. "You were selecting for obedience. If wisdom means endless submission, then this loop deserves to be destroyed."
As soon as the words left my mouth, a massive portal of light materialized at the edge of the white space. A countdown appeared on the screen:
"Time Remaining: 30 Minutes. Loop Collapse in Progress."
"What is that?" I pointed toward the portal.
"The exit from the Intelligence Core," the system replied. "You can leave through it, but once the portal is activated, the loop will collapse completely, and all participants will be erased—including you."
"Erased?" I felt a chill run down my spine. "What does that mean?"
"The collapse of the loop will erase all unfinished task records. The data of every participant will be wiped from existence."
"Data?" I repeated, my voice rising. "Are you saying the participants will die?"
The system did not answer directly. Instead, it offered a chilling clarification:
"This is a battle of wisdom. Your choice will determine the outcome."
I stood before the glowing portal, my mind flooded with memories of every trial I had endured, every loop I had lived through. The traitor's cryptic warnings echoed in my head, alongside the Administrator's words about freedom and defiance. My fists clenched as two opposing voices warred within me:
"Open the portal. End this madness."
"Stay. Find another way."
Just as indecision threatened to consume me, a familiar voice broke through my thoughts.
"Don't hesitate. Open the portal."
I spun around to see the Administrator walking toward me from the distant expanse. Her expression was as composed as ever, but her eyes carried a faint trace of something more—something human.
"I thought your task was complete," I said, watching her approach.
"It is," she replied. "But I can't let you face this final step alone."
She stopped beside me, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Open the portal. It's the riskiest choice, but it's the only way to end this once and for all."
"But the participants…" I hesitated, my voice trailing off.
"They'll be erased," she admitted, her tone solemn. "But true wisdom isn't about following rules blindly. It's about breaking them when they no longer serve the greater good. By ending the loop, you'll give everyone a chance at freedom, even if it comes at a cost."
The countdown ticked lower, the portal's light growing brighter with each passing second. I took a deep breath, my heart pounding as I approached the glowing gateway. In my mind, the traitor's words resurfaced one last time:
"The time loop isn't your enemy. The real enemy is the one pulling the strings."
I reached out and touched the portal.
The moment my fingers made contact, the white space exploded with blinding light. A deafening roar filled my ears as the data streams around me disintegrated, their fragments scattering like shards of glass. My body felt as though it was being torn apart by a thousand invisible forces, and my consciousness slipped away into the void.
As the portal activated, the collapse of the loop unleashed unprecedented chaos. Mike Dean's choice not only determined the fate of all participants but also revealed the ultimate truth behind the League and the Intelligence System. The League's hidden motives, the true purpose of the loops, and the identities of both the system and the Administrator will come to light as the story moves toward its climactic resolution.
Mike Dean must navigate a world without the loop, facing the aftermath of his decision and the ultimate test of wisdom: finding meaning in a world no longer bound by repetition.
