Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Cracks in the Loop
Chapter 4: Cracks in the Loop
"Mike Dean, welcome to the Trial of Wisdom."
The voice rang out again, cold and mechanical. My throat tightened, and sweat trickled down my back as I stared at the familiar screen. The tall, gaunt man stood expressionless before me, exactly as he had during my first encounter with the League of the Wise.
But I knew this wasn't the beginning. It was another reset.
The task information flashed on the screen as predictably as clockwork:
"Mission assigned: Solve the prison escape room. Countdown: five minutes."
The same task, yet again.
I clenched my fists, my mind replaying the words the so-called traitor had left behind:
"The time loop isn't your enemy. The real enemy is the one pulling the strings from behind."
The endless repetition of tasks no longer felt like a test of intellect—it was deliberate manipulation.
The escape room puzzle posed no challenge to me anymore. With practiced ease, I entered the solution, and the screen lit up with a familiar green glow:
"Task Complete."
As expected, the tall man gave his usual faint smile. "Well done, Mr. Dean."
But this time, I didn't immediately leave. Instead, I fixed my gaze on him and asked, "Why is it the same puzzle every time? What's the real purpose of this trial?"
He seemed taken aback by my question but quickly masked his surprise with his usual indifference. "Every participant's tasks are dynamically adjusted based on their intellectual progress. You must continue proving yourself."
"Dynamically adjusted?" I scoffed. "It's just the same thing over and over again. If you're so fond of loops, why not come clean about the rules behind all this?"
He said nothing, only giving me a cryptic look before turning and walking away.
This time, however, the mission took a slight turn.
The second phase was a new task: the "Virtual City Maze." As I navigated the streets of this simulated world, that eerie sense of déjà vu crept back. The layout of the buildings, the numbers on the signs, the props in the shop windows—even the pedestrians—felt like meticulously duplicated code.
As I searched for clues, I muttered to the system, "Are these scenes simulated, or did they exist in reality?"
The system dodged the question, responding with a single line:
"The boundary between virtual and real is for you to decide."
"More cryptic nonsense…" I gritted my teeth and continued walking.
Suddenly, my eyes caught sight of a peculiar street corner. A small stall stood there, marked by a strange symbol. It hadn't been there during my last task.
I approached the stall. Behind it sat an elderly man whose wary gaze seemed to pierce through me. On his table lay a map, marked with key locations across the virtual city.
"Do you want to know the secret of this city?" he asked abruptly.
"What secret?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.
Instead of answering, he pointed to a corner of the map where a few cryptic words were written:
"Layer Zero."
The phrase hit me like a blow. I had seen it before on the card left by the traitor.
"You know about Layer Zero?" I asked in a low voice.
The old man gave a faint, almost pitying smile. "You've seen it more than once. You just haven't realized its significance yet."
"What does that mean?" I pressed.
"Each time you complete a task, they reset the time. And with every reset, you drift further from the truth," he said as he folded the map. Then, leaning closer, he added, "Layer Zero is the core of the loop and your only way out. But to reach it, you'll have to make a difficult choice."
"What choice?" I demanded.
He didn't reply, disappearing down the street before I could stop him.
After completing the mission, I was transported back to the lab. The tall man handed me a folder, his expression as impassive as ever.
"Congratulations, Mr. Dean. You've completed the second phase of the trial. You will now proceed to the next task."
"Wait!" I slammed my hand on the table, fixing him with a piercing stare. "Tell me, what is Layer Zero?"
A flicker of something—confusion or irritation—crossed his face. "Where did you hear that term?"
"Don't play dumb," I snapped. "I've seen it in the virtual city and on the traitor's card. You don't want me to know the truth, do you?"
He didn't respond, merely saying coldly, "Your task is to complete the trial, not to ask unnecessary questions."
"Unnecessary?" I let out a bitter laugh. "What happens if I don't complete the task? How many more times can you reset me?"
Still silent, he pressed a button on the table. The lab lights flickered off, and I felt a familiar dizziness as I was forcibly transported back to the virtual city.
This time, the system's behavior was different. A new message appeared on the screen:
"Anomalous thought patterns detected. Adjusting loop rules."
"Adjusting?" I murmured, a sinking feeling spreading in my chest.
The virtual city looked unfamiliar now. New obstacles blocked my path, and the clues were far more obscure. Stranger still, the system began interjecting with cryptic messages:
"Layer Zero is both the end and the beginning."
"Your choices are diverging from the original path."
These words sent my heart racing. Was the system truly an impartial assistant, or was it part of a larger scheme?
As I neared the task's final objective, a familiar figure emerged from the shadows—the traitor. His cold eyes locked onto mine, but this time, he wasn't running. He was waiting.
"We meet again," he said evenly.
"You know about the loop?" I asked directly.
He nodded. "Not only do I know, but I intend to break it."
"How?" I demanded.
He lifted his gaze, pointing toward a distant tower at the edge of the virtual city. "That's the entrance to Layer Zero. But you can only reach it if you abandon the task."
"Abandon?" I frowned. "What does that mean?"
"Complete the task, and you'll stay trapped in the loop. Abandon it, and you'll uncover the truth behind it all," he said, his voice low but resolute. "The choice is yours."
The task timer ticked down to its final five minutes. I stood in the middle of the street, my palms clammy with sweat. On one side was the system's directive; on the other was the traitor's tower. I felt like I was being torn in two.
Suddenly, the system chimed in with a stark warning:
"Deviating from the task path will result in severe consequences."
Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath. The old man's words, the traitor's cryptic hints, and the mounting evidence all pointed in one direction. Trusting my instincts, I opened my eyes and turned toward the tower.
With each step, I felt the weight of my decision pressing down on me.
