Chapter 1: Chapter 1-2-3
Chapter 1 - The Instructor
The sun was shining brightly in Orlando, Florida. Despite the typical heat, the Iron Will Academy, a well-equipped and discreet space in the heart of the city, was always packed. It was a unique place where martial arts and shooting training coexisted harmoniously.
At the center of it all was João Ricardo Alves, better known as "Ricardo". At 45 years old, the former Brazilian Amphibious Commando and black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu commanded the place with discipline and charisma.
Ricardo was an impressive figure. Tall, with broad shoulders and a well-defined physique that betrayed years of rigorous training, he was also known for his friendliness. Always with a sincere smile and a Brazilian accent that charmed his students, he managed to captivate everyone from nervous beginners to renowned celebrities.
That morning started early for Ricardo. He was in the jiu-jitsu training area, an impeccable mat surrounded by mirrors and banners that highlighted the words "Respect, Discipline, Persistence".
Wearing the traditional white kimono and the faded black belt around his waist, he was finishing adjusting the knot when Demi Lovato entered the room.
"Good morning, Ricardo!" Demi greeted enthusiastically, her hair tied in a ponytail and wearing a blue kimono. She was sweating a little, already warmed up from the previous class.
"Good morning, Demi!" Ricardo replied, giving a warm smile. "Ready to train hard today? Or are you going to give me a break?"
Demi laughed. "You know I never give me a break. But please, take it easy, okay? My shoulder is still a little sore from the last class."
"No problem. Let's work on technique, but don't forget about self-defense. Maybe a little guard passing today?" He winked, going to get some training blocks.
As he adjusted his equipment, Ricardo couldn't help but notice the memories that came flooding back. His life in the Brazilian Amphibious Commandos had shaped who he was today.
For years, he trained in extreme situations, from nighttime infiltrations to survival in the Pantanal. Despite all the challenges, it was during his time in the Corps that he discovered jiu-jitsu.
At the age of 22, he had the chance to train with the legendary Gracie family during a mission in Rio de Janeiro. The connection was instant. Ricardo showed talent and dedication, and the Gracie family welcomed him as one of their own.
He spent years perfecting his game under their tutelage, winning championships and becoming known for his technical and relentless style on the mat.
Even now, decades later, the Gracies were still part of his life. When he traveled to Brazil, he was welcomed like family. At jiu-jitsu events, it was common to see someone from the Gracie lineage mentioning Ricardo with pride.
The class with Demi Lovato was intense, but balanced. Ricardo corrected her patiently and made a point of encouraging her.
"That's it, Demi! Control your breathing. Don't just use strength, use leverage. Now, slide your hips... That's it! Perfect!"
She managed to execute a sweep, and they both laughed when she finally got the dominant position. "I told you it would get better," Demi joked, raising an eyebrow.
"See? I don't doubt you! Just don't get too excited when you train with the other students, huh? They might not like being 'sweated' like that," Ricardo replied, drawing more laughter.
After class, while cleaning the mat, Ricardo was interrupted by a call on his cell phone. He looked at the screen and smiled when he saw the name: Renzo Gracie.
"Great Renzo! How are you?" Ricardo answered energetically.
"Ricardão! My friend, I'm calling because there's a championship here in New York next month. Are you going to show up? It would be an honor to have you with us. Besides, we need that Brazilian barbecue that only you know how to make!"
"Sure, Renzo. I'll find a way to get it. Text me the details and I'll organize my schedule."
After the conversation, Ricardo was thoughtful. Not only was he a teacher and mentor to many, but he also knew how to maintain his connections. Over the years, he had taught the likes of Chris Hemsworth, Meghan Markle, and even NFL players. Despite this, Ricardo never let success go to his head.
In the afternoon, Ricardo changed his kimono for a black shirt with the Iron Will logo and tactical pants. The shooting range was modern, equipped with electronic targets and realistic simulations.
A small group was already waiting, among them a local businessman and an American television actress. Ricardo greeted each one with a firm handshake.
"Today we're going to work on accuracy and stress situations. Remember: safety first," he began, adjusting his ear protectors.
As he explained the techniques, his approach was clear and calm, but no less demanding. He made a point of mixing his military experience with the patience of a teacher.
During the break, while adjusting a pistol for one of the students, the actress asked: "Ricardo, how do you manage to keep everything so balanced? Physical training, shooting lessons, and still manage to be so connected with everyone?"
He smiled, adjusting his tactical hat. "Discipline, focus, and never forgetting where you came from. I've learned that if you work hard and treat people with respect, they never forget you. Besides, I always make a point of learning something new from each person I meet."
After a full day, Ricardo finally had a moment to himself. He sat in the gym's small office, surrounded by photos of memorable moments: one with Rickson Gracie, another with Demi lifting a trophy from a local championship, and even an old black-and-white one from his time in the Amphibious Commandos.
He picked up a medal from the table, an award from a jiu-jitsu championship in California, and held it for a moment. As much as he had accomplished, Ricardo still saw his life as a journey. He wasn't just an instructor or a former soldier; he was a mentor, a friend, and above all, someone who sought to inspire others to surpass their own limits.
At that moment, his cell phone vibrated again. It was a message from Demi: "Thanks for today, Ricardo. You're the best. See you next class!"
He smiled, replied with a brief "Always a pleasure, Demi. See you soon!" and leaned back in his chair.
Life in Orlando was different from the intensity of his years in Brazil, but he wouldn't trade it for anything. After all, he had found his purpose: to transform lives, one class at a time.
Chapter 2 - The Champion in New York
The cold weather of New York was a sudden change for Ricardo, accustomed to the constant heat of Florida. Still, the energy of the city cheered him up as he stepped out of the taxi in front of the arena where the jiu-jitsu championship would take place.
He was dressed in a heavy black jacket and carried his kimono neatly folded in a bag. The Iron Will logo emblazoned on the side of the bag caught the attention of some competitors and fans passing by.
Inside the gym, the atmosphere was a mix of tension and camaraderie. The sound of applause echoed as preliminary fights took place on the various mats scattered around the place. Renzo Gracie was at the center of it all, greeting everyone with the energy and charisma that made him such an iconic figure.
"Ricardão!" Renzo exclaimed when he saw him, extending his arms for a hug. "I'm so glad you came, my friend. This competition is going to be incredible. We have some promising fighters here today, but no one doubts that you are the favorite."
Ricardo laughed, relaxed. "Favorite or not, the important thing is to give my best. And then, who knows, maybe open that picanha steak you talk about so much, right?"
Renzo laughed. "That's the spirit! But seriously, everyone is excited to see you in action. Especially the young ones. They see you as a legend."
Ricardo nodded humbly. He knew that his name carried weight, but he didn't like to rely on it. For him, each fight was an opportunity to prove to himself that he was still at the top.
When it was his turn to compete, the crowd in the gym grew. Everyone wanted to see Ricardo in action. He walked onto the mat calmly, wearing a simple white kimono, his black belt showing his years of experience and achievements.
The first opponent was a promising young man from the new generation, full of energy and with an aggressive style. Ricardo greeted his opponent with a slight smile before the fight began.
As soon as the referee gave the signal, Ricardo took control. His movement was fluid, almost artistic. He passed the guard with precision, executed flawless sweeps, and finished with a technique that seemed to require minimal effort. The fight ended in less than two minutes, with a perfect choke.
"What a clinic, Ricardo!" Renzo exclaimed from the side of the mat, applauding along with the crowd.
The following fights followed the same pattern. Each opponent seemed like an insurmountable wall at first, but Ricardo dismantled them with technique and patience. He never used unnecessary force; it was all about leverage, positioning, and absolute control.
At the end, when he was crowned champion, the entire gym stood up to applaud him. Renzo hugged him on the podium and, into the microphone, declared:
"Today we saw why Ricardo is considered the GOAT of gi jiu-jitsu. His technique, his patience, and his respect for the sport are inspiring. He is not only a champion, but a living legend."
Ricardo took the microphone and, smiling, said: "Thank you, Renzo, and thank you all. For me, jiu-jitsu is more than winning. It's a journey, a way to connect with others and with myself. Every fight, every training session is a learning experience. And today, I just want to thank you for being able to share this with you."
After the championship, Ricardo went straight to Renzo's house. The atmosphere was relaxed, with family, friends and other fighters gathering to celebrate the victory and the sport. On the porch, a huge barbecue grill was already in operation, spreading the irresistible aroma of grilled meat.
Renzo was excited, as always, walking around the house with a glass of caipirinha in his hand.
"Ricardo, my brother! As always, only you could bring the crowd together like this. Is the meat good there?"
Ricardo was at the barbecue, controlling the grill with the dexterity of someone who had been doing this for years. He took one look at the picanha and replied:
"It's coming out perfect, Renzo. You know I take this seriously, right? Champion on the mat, master on the grill!"
Kyra Gracie, who was sitting near the balcony with a drink, joked: "Ricardo, you should open a Brazilian restaurant in New York. I bet it would be a success."
He replied, laughing: "If I do that, I'll have to train even harder so I don't gain weight. Better to keep cooking as a hobby."
While serving the pieces of meat, Ricardo chatted with everyone. It was a gathering full of stories, laughter and, of course, lots of food.
"Renzo," Ricardo called at one point, "do you remember that time I almost ran out of gas in the middle of a championship in Rio? I thought I was going to faint."
Renzo laughed. "Of course I remember! But you still finished the guy with an inverted triangle. That shows how tough you are."
Later, with the barbecue already turned off and most of the guests gone, Ricardo sat with Renzo on the balcony. The cool New York air was a contrast to the heat of the night, but he enjoyed the tranquility of that moment.
"It was a good day," Renzo commented, breaking the silence.
"It was," Ricardo replied, looking up at the stars. "I always feel at home when I'm with you guys. It's like I have two families: my blood family and my jiu-jitsu family."
Renzo smiled. "You're family, Ricardo. Always have been. And always will be. What you do for the sport, for the community, is something few can achieve. It's not just about winning. It's about inspiring."
Ricardo nodded, reflecting on the words. He knew his journey was far from over. There were more competitions, more students to train, more lives to impact. But for now, he allowed himself to enjoy that moment of peace and gratitude.
That night, before going to sleep, he sent a message to his team at Iron Will: "Back soon. Get ready. I want to train with you like never before."
He knew that every step he took on the mat or in life was another chapter in the story he was building, not just for himself, but for everyone who crossed his path.
Chapter 3 - Gisele's Arrival
Ricardo arrived at his main gym in Indian Creek after a few intense days in New York. Iron Will's headquarters was his pride and joy. A spacious and sophisticated space, with impeccable mats, state-of-the-art equipment and large windows that offered a stunning view of the surrounding greenery.
He parked his SUV in the reserved spot, got out with his backpack on his shoulder and took a deep breath. Although he loved competing and traveling, this was where he truly felt at home. The routine of teaching and interacting with his students made him feel alive.
Upon entering, he was greeted enthusiastically by the staff and students. Everyone wanted to know about the championship, and he, humble as always, shared only the basics:
"It was good, but it's over. Let's focus on what matters: training you!"
It was early afternoon when a familiar figure walked through the glass door of the gym. Gisele Bündchen, accompanied by her two children, Benjamin, 15, and Vivian, 12, walked in with the elegant posture and striking presence that had made her one of the world's greatest models.
Ricardo, who was adjusting some kimonos in the reception area, looked up and immediately recognized Gisele. She was even more striking in person. Tall, with golden hair and a gentle smile, she exuded a natural charm that seemed to light up the room.
On the other hand, Gisele was surprised to see Ricardo. In her mind, she had imagined an older teacher, perhaps strict and austere, but the man who stood before her was completely different. Ricardo was extremely attractive, with his athletic physique, well-groomed beard and a charisma that shone through in every gesture.
She hid her surprise and smiled politely. "Hi, you're Ricardo, right? I'm Gisele. My children are starting school today."
Ricardo extended his hand, smiling back. "Sure, nice to meet you, Gisele. And you must be Benjamin and Vivian, right? Ready to learn some jiu-jitsu?"
Benjamin seemed shy, but Vivian responded excitedly: "Yes! My mom said it's a very good sport for us."
"And she's absolutely right," Ricardo said, winking at the girl. "You're going to have a lot of fun. And, more importantly, learn how to defend yourself and build confidence."
On the mat, Ricardo quickly proved himself to be an exceptional instructor. He knew how to balance discipline and fun, especially with young people. As he taught basic concepts of posture and balance, he made light-hearted comments to put the kids at ease.
"Benjamin, if you control your hips like that, no one can take you down. It'll look like you're made of cement!"
Vivian laughed as she tried to replicate the move. "And me, teacher? What do I look like?"
"With that technique, Vivian, you look like a ninja in disguise," Ricardo joked, drawing a laugh from her.
Outside the mat, Gisele watched intently. She was impressed by Ricardo's ability to connect with the children, especially Benjamin, who was usually more reserved. He managed to keep their attention and enthusiasm, something that wasn't always easy.
But she also couldn't help but notice him as a man. The way he moved on the mat, with confidence and fluidity, was mesmerizing. And that combination of an intimidating appearance but a gentle and playful demeanor had an effect on her.
"Focus, Gisele," she thought, trying to focus on her children.
When the class ended, Benjamin and Vivian were sweaty but with big smiles on their faces. They ran over to Gisele while Ricardo organized the equipment in the corner.
"Mom, that was really cool!" Vivian exclaimed. "Teacher Ricardo is amazing. He explained everything in an easy way and even joked with us."
"Yeah, mom," Benjamin agreed, which was rare. "He seems a little scary at first, but he's really cool. You can tell he knows what he's doing."
Gisele smiled, satisfied. "I'm glad you liked it. Do you want to continue, then?"
"Of course!" they both answered in unison.
While they were talking, Ricardo approached. "So, did you approve the first class?"
"Yes!" Vivian replied excitedly. "When's the next one?"
"We have a class at the same time next week. Just bring the same energy you brought today, okay?"
Benjamin nodded, and Vivian smiled broadly before leaving.
With the children already off the mat, Gisele stayed behind for a moment. She wanted to thank them and maybe ask a few questions about the training.
"Ricardo, thank you for your attention to them. It's hard to find a teacher who can really captivate both of them at the same time. You were amazing."
He gave a genuine smile, the one that seemed to disarm anyone. "I'm glad you liked it. They have a lot of potential, especially Benjamin. He just needs a little more confidence, but that comes with time and practice."
Gisele nodded, crossing her arms. "It's true. He's always been more introspective, but I noticed he let his hair down more today. You have a special way of teaching."
"Thank you. And, well, it's not just about teaching technique. It's about building confidence, teaching values, and, of course, having a little fun in the process. They're lucky to have a mother like you, who invests in their well-being."
Gisele felt a slight heat in her face. She wasn't used to receiving compliments like that, in such a direct and sincere way.
"Well, I guess we're lucky to have found a teacher like you," she replied, trying to keep her composure.
In the car, on the way home, Benjamin and Vivian couldn't stop talking about the class and Ricardo.
"Mom, did you see how strong he is? Like, I think he could knock me down with just one finger!" Benjamin said excitedly.
"And he's really funny too," Vivian added. "I thought it would be kind of serious, but he's really funny."
Gisele laughed, watching her children in the rearview mirror. It was rare to see them so excited about something, and it made her happy.
"Well, it seems like you really liked him. That's great," she said, thinking to herself.
Ricardo wasn't just an excellent teacher. He was someone who knew how to touch people, to make them feel seen and valued. And despite his intimidating appearance, he had a lightness that was hard to ignore.
As she drove, Gisele realized that for the first time in a long time, she was curious about someone beyond her own routine and responsibilities. And it made her smile.
