Chapter 14: Chapter Fourteen: The Realm of Echoes
The light faded as Caden stepped through the glowing doorway, revealing yet another alien landscape. This time, he stood atop a vast platform suspended in a void. Dozens of smaller platforms floated around him, each connected by narrow, glowing bridges. Above and below, fragments of structures and statues drifted in endless silence, as if remnants of a forgotten world.
The air hummed with energy, and the ring on his finger pulsed faintly, syncing with the rhythm of the realm. Ahead, at the center of the largest platform, stood a towering obelisk, its surface covered in intricate carvings that glowed with shifting light and shadow.
Caden approached cautiously, his hand resting on his sword. The obelisk radiated power, and the closer he got, the more he could feel its pull—a mixture of warmth and cold that made his skin prickle. The ring seemed to resonate with the obelisk, the glow of its energy intensifying.
Before he could reach the base of the obelisk, a voice echoed through the void, deep and resonant.
"Bearer of the ring, you have passed the Trials of Balance and Reflection. But the Eternal Strive is not yet within your grasp. To wield its power, you must face the Echoes of the Eternal."
The platform trembled slightly, and the floating bridges began to shift, twisting and rearranging themselves into new patterns. Shadows flickered at the edges of the smaller platforms, coalescing into shapes—humanoid figures armed with weapons of varying designs. Their features were indistinct, but their glowing eyes betrayed their intent.
Caden drew his sword, his pulse quickening. "Echoes, huh? Let's see what you've got."
---
The first shadow leaped from a nearby platform, landing before him with inhuman speed. It lunged, its blade aimed for his heart. Caden parried the attack, the impact reverberating through his arms. He countered with a quick slash, but the shadow dissolved into mist, reforming behind him and striking again.
Caden ducked, spinning to face his opponent. His sword cut through the shadow's form, dispersing it temporarily. But more shadows were already moving across the bridges toward him, their movements unnervingly fluid.
The ring on his finger flared, its energy flowing into him. Caden felt his body move faster, his strikes more precise. He dispatched the nearest shadow with a burst of golden light, the energy tearing through its form. The shadow let out a distorted cry before dissipating into the void.
"You're not alone," the Keeper's voice echoed, calm yet firm. "The ring holds power that can aid you, but it is not infinite. Use it wisely."
Caden gritted his teeth, his eyes darting between the advancing shadows. The bridges were narrow, but he could use that to his advantage. If he could force them to fight one at a time, he'd stand a better chance.
He darted toward a nearby bridge, his sword at the ready. The first shadow to cross met his blade, its weapon shattering as Caden's strike cleaved through it. The others hesitated, as though reassessing their approach.
But then something changed. The shadows began to merge, their forms blending into a single, towering figure. The air grew colder, and the obelisk's glow dimmed. The merged shadow stood at least twice Caden's height, its form rippling with dark energy.
"Of course it wouldn't be that easy," Caden muttered, tightening his grip on his sword.
The shadow giant roared, its voice a cacophony of distorted echoes. It raised a massive, jagged blade and brought it down with tremendous force. Caden leaped to the side, the impact of the strike shattering part of the platform.
The ring pulsed again, and Caden felt a surge of energy. He darted forward, his sword glowing with golden light as he aimed for the giant's core. The strike connected, and the shadow reeled, its form flickering. But it recovered quickly, swiping at him with its massive arm.
Caden barely managed to dodge, the force of the attack sending him skidding across the platform. His mind raced. The giant was too strong to defeat with brute force alone. He needed to think strategically.
As he rose to his feet, his eyes caught sight of the smaller platforms surrounding the obelisk. The shadows that had once occupied them were gone, their energy seemingly absorbed by the giant. The platforms, however, still glowed faintly, their light connected to the obelisk by thin strands of energy.
An idea formed in his mind. "The obelisk… It's their source."
He sprinted toward one of the glowing platforms, dodging another of the giant's strikes. As he reached the edge, the ring pulsed, and a surge of energy shot through him. He jumped, landing on the smaller platform with a roll. The glow beneath his feet intensified, and the strand of energy connecting it to the obelisk flared brightly.
The giant roared again, its form flickering violently. It turned its attention toward Caden, but he was already moving to the next platform. Each time he landed on one, the glow grew stronger, and the obelisk pulsed with golden light.
By the time Caden reached the final platform, the obelisk was shining like a small sun. The giant let out a final, deafening roar as its form began to unravel, the dark energy spiraling toward the obelisk. With a brilliant flash, the shadow was consumed, and the realm fell silent once more.
---
Caden stood panting, his sword still in hand. The obelisk's glow had softened, its energy now stable. The ring on his finger was warm, its light steady and calm.
The Keeper's voice returned, softer this time. "You have faced the Echoes of the Eternal and prevailed. Each step brings you closer to understanding the power you wield. But remember, Caden—the Eternal Strive is not simply a force to be conquered. It is a truth to be embraced."
Before him, another doorway appeared, its frame shimmering with golden and black energy intertwined. Caden sheathed his sword and approached it, his resolve unwavering.
He didn't know what trials lay ahead, but he was ready to face them. With a deep breath, he stepped through the doorway, disappearing into the light.
