Chapter 20: Chapter 1:Preparation and Power
Luc sat on a bench outside the academy, staring at the mission envelope in his hands.
Revenant. Subway tunnels. Extremely aggressive.
He sighed. That sounded like a great way to get killed.
Theo sat next to him, absentmindedly flicking his lighter open and closed. "Revenants are nasty. They don't just die, they cling to life. And if they've been around long enough, they get stronger."
Vera leaned against the wall, arms crossed. "We'll need to hit it hard and fast. Fire, water, and purification should do the trick."
Luc frowned. "And… which part of that am I handling?"
Theo smirked. "Dunno. Can you even purify anything?"
Luc scowled. "I wouldn't be here if I couldn't."
Vera sighed. "Look, it's just… we've never actually seen you do much in class. You struggle with energy gathering, your technique is shaky, and, well…"
She trailed off, and Luc could feel the silent you're kind of weak hanging in the air.
He clenched his fists.
Theo stretched lazily. "No worries, man. We'll handle the heavy lifting. Just don't get in the way."
Luc gritted his teeth. Right. They think I'm just weak.
Fine. He'd prove them wrong.
"Let me try energy gathering now," he said, standing up.
Theo shrugged. "Sure. Knock yourself out."
Luc closed his eyes, focusing. The exorcist energy around him felt distant, uncooperative. He reached for it, trying to pull it in like he'd seen the others do.
For a brief second, a faint glow flickered around his hand—
Then it shattered. The energy recoiled, snapping back like a rubber band.
Luc stumbled, nearly falling.
Theo winced. "Oof. Yeah, that was pretty bad."
Vera sighed, rubbing her forehead. "Luc, you're overthinking it. Exorcist energy should flow naturally. If you have to force it, you're doing it wrong."
Luc forced a grin. "Right. I'll keep that in mind."
Of course it doesn't work for me—because I'm not like you.
But he couldn't say that.
Instead, he exhaled sharply and sat back down, scowling at the ground.
Theo clapped his shoulder. "Hey, no shame in it. Some people just aren't good at energy stuff. Maybe you're more of a strategy guy."
Luc wanted to die.
Vera adjusted her gloves. "Well, we'll figure it out on the field. Worst case, just be bait while we do the actual work."
Luc groaned. "I hate this team."
Theo laughed. "You'll get used to it."
Luc sighed, staring at his mission envelope again.
Revenant, huh?
If he wanted to survive, he needed to figure out how to make his energy work—before they found out why it didn't.
