Chapter 629: Immortal Land (2)
```
Master Chao Du nodded, not saying much more. Summoning a carapace to protect his body, he walked towards the pool.
"Wei, you wait for us outside," Lin Shen handed his backpack to Wei.
"I... want to go down..." Wei Wufu did not reach out to take the backpack, intending to join Lin Shen and the others in their descent.
"Alright." Lin Shen did not allow Wei Wufu to go down, not because he needed him to stay above, but because Wei Wufu had a bit of fear of water.
The three of them followed Master Chao Du into the water. Lin Shen and Wei Wufu climbed down using the roots of the Buddha Fruit Tree, and upon submersion, they saw that the pool's water was indeed crystal clear, allowing them to see a great distance away.
The furthest down, Master Chao Du, with his carapace, resembled a golden Buddha, the helm adorned with symbols of the Buddha, and a divine halo of Buddha light at his back, soft golden light illuminating the surroundings.
Ouyang Yudu was an excellent swimmer, but because of Lin Shen and Wei Wufu, he too had to descend slowly and did not speed up.
The Master Chao Du ahead, seeing the state of Lin Shen and Wei Wufu, also slowed down.
The energy in the water was pure and gentle, continuously flowing into their bodies, nourishing both their Life Bases and Lin Shen's body.
This place had an abundance of energy that was hundreds, if not thousands of times richer than that of Celestial Star; simply soaking in this pool daily would surely allow one's level to soar rapidly.
Were it not for the level barriers that required special methods to break through, one could level up endlessly here.
The deeper they went, the purer the pool's energy became. Having descended just over a hundred meters, Lin Shen felt as if what surrounded them was not water, but pure energy itself.
"If I used the Super Base Pattern here, I wonder if the World's Force that gets absorbed would directly burst my body." Lin Shen had a vague feeling that his Double Life Base might possibly attain a double ten ranking today, right here.
After descending over a thousand meters, Lin Shen felt as though the water below had turned into extremely fine particles, similar to being in sand, making further descent extremely difficult, as if digging down.
It was just a sensation, as the water was still water. Ahead, Master Chao Du continued to descend slowly without being affected.
This feeling was not unfamiliar to Lin Shen; he had encountered a similar situation when he had entered Luoja Snow Mountain with Tian Buluo.
"If we go further down, the pool's water might become like copper walls and iron barriers, impossible to move through," Lin Shen thought with a twinge of disappointment. According to this situation, it seemed impossible to descend to a position where they could see the ancient temple.
As he wallowed in frustration, a luminescence slowly radiated from the bow on Lin Shen's back.
The water around Lin Shen started to flow away from his body, forming a bubble-like space in the water.
Lin Shen was both shocked and delighted, and in the bubble, he used his flight ability to stabilize his position, then turned to look at Wei Wufu and Ouyang Yudu. He noticed they were in the same situation, as their tokens and square scarves also emitted a luminescence, keeping the pool water at bay.
The three of them discovered that with this item isolating the pool water, they could actually fly in the water without any hindrance.
Master Chao Du, witnessing the changes in them, was slightly surprised but didn't mind and continued his descent.
With their speed increased, Master Chao Du no longer held back, quickening his pace downward.
Lin Shen and the others easily kept up with Master Chao Du this time, flying slowly behind him and quickly descending several thousand meters.
Master Chao Du's descending speed noticeably slowed down, looking to be in obvious difficulty, similar to the state Lin Shen and the others had experienced earlier.
The Buddha light behind Master Chao Du grew brighter, as if combating the pool water, forcefully digging downward.
After descending for more than a thousand meters, Lin Shen and his companions discovered a glow appearing from the originally dark depths.
A vast ancient temple was faintly visible underwater, with eight enormous stone pillars rising from the gloom, each topped with an exotic beast jade statue, emitting a fluorescent glow that illuminated the black ancient temple.
As they dove further, the features of the ancient temple and the exotic beasts slowly became clearer; the entire architecture of the temple was made of an odd mud-brick construction.
The walls were built with black mud bricks, while the roof was woven from grass, looking very rudimentary.
The only parts of the ancient temple made from carved stone were those eight pillars, which was different from Luoja Snow Mountain.
Luoja Snow Mountain was protected by a certain force, forming an area that could move on its own.
But this ancient temple had no such protection, directly immersed in the water, and it was unclear how those mud bricks and grass roofs remained non-decayed.
The roots of the Buddha Fruit Tree, like giant pythons, pierced into the ancient temple, burrowing into the earth below.
At this point, Master Chao Du could dive no further. His lips did not move, yet a voice reached the ears of Lin Shen and the others: "I can only dive down to here, I am powerless to go any further."
Lin Shen swam toward Master Chao Du and let him into his water bubble.
"Master, let's go down together and have a look," Lin Shen wasn't entirely at ease in his heart concerning Master Chao Du.
But if this really was the Immortal Land, and there were undying creatures lurking within, Master Chao Du might be the only one capable of confronting them.
After weighing the pros and cons, Lin Shen still decided to take him further down.
In fact, Lin Shen was also clear in his mind that with Master Chao Du's abilities, snatching something from them wouldn't be difficult, so there was no need to worry so much.
The four of them sank in their bubbles, slowly descending into the range of the ancient temple.
The eight exotic beast jade statues showed no reaction, allowing them to safely land inside the ancient temple.
There were a total of seventeen mud-brick houses within the ancient temple, surrounded by a fence made of unknown wood, without doors or walls.
The four walked towards one of the mud-brick houses and upon pushing the door open, they immediately saw a fire blazing inside the house.
Lin Shen and the others found this eerily odd, as the house too was filled with water. The fire was burning in a mud basin, with flames merging with the water as if burning in air, without the slightest impediment.
Even more eerie was the fact that above those flames loomed a fiery phantom, resembling a fetus, exuding an indescribably terrifying aura.
"The flames in that mud basin... they're actually nurturing a terrifying creature... This truly is the Immortal Land..." Lin Shen and the others looked on in astonishment.
Lin Shen hadn't been to other Base Mutation sites, but through his research, he knew that such sites were usually some kind of pond or land, like cultivating plants, nurturing Base Variant creatures.
However, he had never encountered a Base Mutation site that nurtured Base Variant creatures from a fire basin in any records.
"Let's go look inside the other houses," Lin Shen suggested, seeing that there was only a fire basin in this mud-brick house.
Upon reaching the second mud-brick house and opening the door, there was also a mud fire basin inside, with fire burning in it. At the top of the flames was a phantom resembling a tiger, but with wings on its back.
Its presence was clearly more terrifying than the fetal-like phantom from before, looking as though it might open its eyes and leap from the fire at any moment.
