Chapter 584: Crossing the River
Lin Shen didn't know what to say. He should have thought of it earlier; for the Wei Family to raise someone like Wei Wufu, they must be a distinct group of people.
"Uncle Xin, I have a super self-healing ability. It's okay to give it a try," Lin Shen said.
Wei Shouxin stubbornly shook his head, "No, this kind of damage to the brain is permanent and irreversible. If it can't be healed, I can't explain it to the old master. Let's take another route."
"Uncle Xin, I'm confident I can make it across. Please let me try," Lin Shen knew that if they took the other route, it would probably mean Wei Shouxin and the others would have to take the risk themselves.
With Stairway to Heaven and the Floating On Water Skill, he was almost certain he could rush across. Even if the river defied the heavens and he couldn't pass with his Fire Seed ability, he still had Evolution Theory as a safety net, and Super Reconstitution to recover. It was much better than having them take the risk again.
Wei Shouxin wanted to stop him, but Wei Wufu said from the side, "Uncle... he... can..."
Wei Shouxin looked at Wei Wufu with doubt, "How can there be certainty in such a thing?"
After a pause, Wei Shouxin added, "Lin Shen, I know you're powerful, but that's all the more reason not to take risks. You're the one who has the chance to step out and support a piece of the sky for our human race. It's not worth gambling your future on something trivial like this, not even for a one in ten thousand chance."
Lin Shen really didn't know what to say. The Wei Family's care for him was indeed no different from their own family members.
Others would definitely not stop him this way.
"Uncle Xin, I'm not gambling. I truly am confident that I can get across. You know Wufu; he doesn't lie," Lin Shen had to explain to Wei Shouxin.
Wei Shouxin hesitated upon hearing this. He naturally knew Wei Wufu's character; if Wei Wufu said Lin Shen could do it, then it probably was possible.
But this was Lin Shen's first time here, so how could he be so confident?
"Uncle Xin, tie the rope well." Seeing Wei Shouxin hesitate, Lin Shen leaped up, intending to jump across the surface of the river.
But as soon as he entered the lake's vicinity, he felt a tremendous force pulling his body downward. Lin Shen quickly stepped his left foot on his right foot's back, trying to leap up again.
He did manage to leap a distance, but the height of his leap was not as fast as the speed of his fall. He was about to fall into the river.
Lin Shen was a bit surprised, realizing that this river indeed had something peculiar about it; the pulling force was too strong. Although Stairway to Heaven was useable, it wasn't enough to break free.
Wei Shouxin, watching, greatly regretted his hesitation and felt he shouldn't have been indecisive. He should have insisted on Lin Shen not taking the risk.
He gripped the rope tightly, ready to pull Lin Shen out the moment he fell into the water, to minimize the damage from the river as much as possible.
The reason he did not pull now was that it was simply impossible to do so; forcibly pulling would only break the rope.
Just as Lin Shen was about to fall into the river, Wei Shouxin was prepared to pull the rope, but suddenly he saw Lin Shen lightly tap the water's surface with the tip of his foot, as if a dragonfly skimming the water or as one practicing a light-body technique, actually stepping on the water's surface and rushing across step by step, steadily landing on the other side.
Wei Shouxin was both shocked and delighted, "Lin Shen, are you alright?"
"I'm fine. I'll secure the rope first." Lin Shen unfastened the rope from his body, found a large stone, and tried to tie the rope around the stone.
"Don't move, there are mushrooms all over it. If you tie the rope to it, you may damage the mushrooms and possibly get contaminated with poison. Tie the rope to your weapon and then stick the weapon into the stone," Wei Shouxin quickly said.
Lin Shen did as Wei Shouxin suggested, tying the rope to his sheathed Scrap Sword and then stabbing the Scrap Sword into the stone.
Seeing that Lin Shen had finished, Wei Shouxin began to pull the rope, trying to straighten and secure it.
But a new problem emerged: after the rope had left the surface of the water, it simply couldn't be pulled up.
"Xin, stop pulling, the river's strength is too bizarre, nothing can stay on the surface without being sucked down." Lin Shen had already realized that, the method of crossing the river with a rope might not work when he came over just now.
He once again leapt towards the river surface, using the Floating On Water Skill to return to the opposite bank, then went to Wei Wufu's side and directly hoisted him up.
Wei Wufu knew what Lin Shen intended to do, and he cooperated with Lin Shen without any unnecessary movements.
Lin Shen, carrying Wei Wufu, leapt towards the river surface again, which gave Wei Shouxin a scare, but then he saw Lin Shen carrying Wei Wufu, stepping on the river surface and rushing to the opposite bank without falling into the river.
"The old master values Lin Shen for good reason," Wei Shouxin completely relieved his worries.
Lin Shen repeated the process, carrying both Wei Shouxin and the unconscious Wei Shoucheng across the river.
The four of them rested by the riverbank, waiting for Wei Shoucheng to wake up.
After about an hour or so, Wei Shoucheng finally regained consciousness, but his condition seemed somewhat off, like a hangover with a headache.
After a good while, Wei Shoucheng appeared to be much better.
"I'm alright now, it seems we can't cross this river, let's go around the other way," Wei Shoucheng said.
"We have already crossed," Wei Shouxin said with a smile.
"Crossed? How did we cross?" Wei Shoucheng couldn't help but be stunned and looked across the river. Although the two sides seemed similar, the valley had a curvature, and he hadn't noticed it before. Now upon closer inspection, he indeed realized they were on the opposite side.
"Lin Shen carried us across, he can tread on the water surface," Wei Shouxin explained the events with a smile.
After hearing this, Wei Shoucheng laughed and said, "You kid are something, you actually made it across. If I had known it could be done like this, I wouldn't have embarrassed myself."
"Next time, I'll go first," Lin Shen said.
"That won't do," Wei Shoucheng quickly shook his head: "You just follow us honestly, don't mess around, if you get injured, we won't be able to explain to the old master."
The four resumed their journey, continuing along the valley, and it wasn't long before they saw some giant colorful mushrooms ahead.
Those giant colorful mushrooms stood in the valley like ancient trees, with mushroom caps as large as tree canopies.
Lin Shen and his companions carefully walked past those giant mushrooms, stepping on smaller ones, and found that the giant mushrooms were not mobile creatures; they were like the smaller mushrooms, only larger.
They didn't dare to be careless. With mushrooms so large, their toxicity could be stronger; in case they burst, they might not escape unharmed.
The farther they walked, the more giant mushrooms appeared in the valley. If the earlier small mushrooms were like grassland, then this place had already become a Mushroom Forest.
Still, smaller mushrooms covered the ground beneath the giant mushrooms and on the mountainside.
Lin Shen looked at these mushrooms and secretly wondered if there was any connection to the Mushroom Beast tide at Yashen Base that he had encountered previously.
Wei Shouxin, who was scouting ahead, suddenly stopped, made a gesture for silence, then pointed at a giant mushroom ahead.
At first, Lin Shen and the others didn't notice anything unusual, but following Wei Shouxin's gesture, they looked in that direction and immediately spotted something strange.
