Chapter 577: Greed for Life and Fear of Death Sword
Lin Shen's first thought after finishing the book was, "Could the Heavenly Consort actually possess the Heavenly Eye Immortal Light?"
The Heavenly Consort comes from the Peacock Clan, and although the Peacock Clan is considered quite large, compared to the Celestial Race, it naturally counts for little, with far less influence.
As the Heavenly Emperor, there are countless beauties in his harem, so why favor the Heavenly Consort, who hails from the Peacock Clan, above all others?
Is it for her beauty? Lin Shen had always felt this answer was not quite reliable.
It's not just the Heavenly Emperor; even he, Lin Shen, had seen plenty of beautiful women, and beauties are never in short supply in the universe, let alone for the Heavenly Emperor.
If it were a matter of affection, wouldn't there be Imperial Consorts whom the Heavenly Emperor had watched grow up, resulting in a deeper bond than with a foreign-born Heavenly Consort?
Lin Shen thought over and over but could never figure out why the Heavenly Consort was so favored. Yet today, after reading this book, it seemed he had found the answer.
According to Lin Shen's speculation, the Heavenly Consort was a life-saving talisman for Emperor Tianshu. Whether it would be of any use remained unknown, but there was a fifty percent chance it could be vital—perhaps it could save his life during a fatal calamity he could not otherwise escape.
"That old man, Emperor Tianshu, is indeed very cunning," Lin Shen hurriedly returned the book to its place. This thing was to be seen and forgotten; it absolutely must not be allowed to leak out. It would be best if no one knew he had read this book.
Upon reflection, the Heavenly Consort was somehow pitiful. She appeared to be loved and adored by all, but in reality, she was just a tool.
Lin Shen browsed through some other books, all incomplete works, some so confusing he couldn't even understand what they were about. It's not that they were worthless; based on these concepts, the resulting creations could be quite impressive, but the majority were impractical.
After browsing a few books, Lin Shen didn't want to waste any more time, so he left the room and returned to the Skill Pavilion, preferring to enjoy the fruits of others' labor.
Lin Shen looked around for a while, then made his way to the Blade Technique area.
He now had two fine blades in his possession, one was the Evil Ghost Blade, which could be used as a blade, and the other was the indestructible Scrap Sword.
Add to that, the Inheritance Fan could also be used as a blade. He had never really made use of these, which was a waste.
Since he was here, it wouldn't hurt to pick up a Blade Technique to practice.
There were plenty of top-tier Blade Techniques on the bookshelf. Lin Shen looked at a few, all of which were difficult to practice, and all required a long time of practice before any results could be expected.
"Isn't there a crash course in Blade Technique? It doesn't have to be mastered; as long as it's usable, that'll do, since I don't rely on Blade Technique to win anyhow." Lin Shen searched and before long, he indeed found a Blade Technique that could be learned quickly.
One has to say that the Celestial Race's treasured collection was indeed rich, and it must have been fate that this Blade Technique and Lin Shen were meant to be, because the name of the book was, surprisingly, "The Greed for Life and Fear of Death Blade Technique."
It seemed like a Blade Technique made to accompany his practiced "The Greed for Life and Fear of Death Elixir," but upon closer examination, it had nothing to do with the Immortality Scripture.
The blade is a fierce tiger among weapons, and most Blade Techniques are founded on ferocious, ruthless, and lethal offensive moves. However, "The Greed for Life and Fear of Death Blade Technique" is based on defensive moves.
Lin Shen went through the entire set of ten moves in the Blade Technique and, surprisingly, there was not a single offensive move; they were all defensive.
"You say you practice the blade, yet every move is defensive. Then why practice the blade at all? Wouldn't it be better to just train with a shield or something?" Lin Shen said with a chuckle, talking to himself, "Naturally, I'm not that kind of person to be strictly defensive. However, I could still practice it. That way, when I come across someone using such a defensive blade technique, I'll know how to break it."
Lin Shen took the blade manual and began to read it with relish, and before he knew it, several hours had passed.
There were only ten moves in the blade technique, but each one was the essence of defense against different forms of attack, each with a fixed set of moves.
Lin Shen worked hard to memorize all ten moves, practicing each one until he had the form and style down pat, and he picked it up quite quickly.
As he practiced, Lin Shen felt as if the blade technique was missing something. After giving it some thought, he realized why he had always felt something was lacking.
He was practicing with a scrap sword, holding the sword in one hand and the scabbard in the other. While the sword was being utilized, the scabbard remained idle.
"This scrap sword and its scabbard were forged from the same material, both indestructible. Since the aim is to defend, then it should be a thorough defense, and it would be better to make use of the scabbard as well." Lin Shen decided that once he was back, he would modify the single-handed blade technique to a dual-handed version.
After all, both were used for defense, and there was no real difference between a sword and its scabbard, especially since the scrap sword wasn't sharpened to begin with, making it no different from its scabbard.
After putting away the sword, he looked over the chapters in the blade manual and found that the manual for the Greed for Life and Fear of Death Sword could be borrowed, so he planned to take it with him to study at his leisure.
Lin Shen browsed through some other books, but unfortunately, he did not find the skills used by Dou Shi Buddha. He had no choice but to give up and plan to come back to look another time.
There were simply too many secret manuals here. Even if it was only this Skill Pavilion he was in, he alone might not be able to go through everything once even in ten years.
When Lin Shen arrived at the entrance, the librarian processed his borrowing procedure smoothly, and he successfully borrowed the blade manual.
"Lord Dean." As soon as Lin Shen left the library, he saw a Celestial approach the librarian, who immediately stood up to pay his respects.
"What book did the Chief of the Heavenly Institute borrow?" the Dean asked.
"The Greed for Life and Fear of Death Blade Technique," replied the librarian without hesitation.
The Dean was slightly startled, "He spent such a long time inside and only borrowed a blade manual for the Greed for Life and Fear of Death Sword?"
"Yes, Lord Dean. He only borrowed one blade manual," the librarian confirmed after checking the borrowing records again.
The Dean furrowed his brows, "The Greed for Life and Fear of Death Sword is merely a defensive blade technique, not even top-tier by itself. It's only on this floor purely because it, together with another technique called the Cut Off Descendants and Grandchildren Sword, constitute a dual sword-blade technique. They were the secret skills of Zhuo Lianxin, the universe's former number one most-wanted criminal. After our clan killed Zhuo Lianxin, we only found the Greed for Life and Fear of Death Sword on him, not the Cut Off Descendants and Grandchildren Sword. The blade technique on its own is purely defensive and doesn't qualify to be on this floor by itself. So, what is he planning to do with this single blade manual?"
No one could answer him. He felt it was a bit strange, but he didn't ask any further questions. Since it was just one secret manual being borrowed, it didn't warrant too much attention.
However, after the Dean returned to his office, he still contacted An Jiahe to notify him of Lin Shen's borrowing of the Greed for Life and Fear of Death Sword manual.
"His skills are certainly peculiar, but it's like a student who is severely lacking in general knowledge, unable to cope with comprehensive exams, trying to make up for his weaknesses is normal," mused An Jiahe. "His self-awareness isn't bad. Choosing to play defensively is a good option for his current situation. However, a set of the Greed for Life and Fear of Death Sword may not be entirely sufficient for defense. Without the pair of the Cut Off Descendants and Grandchildren Sword, the blade technique inherently has fatal flaws."
"I once studied the Greed for Life and Fear of Death Blade Technique myself, attempting to recreate the lost Cut Off Descendants and Grandchildren Sword. Eventually, I realized that to perfect these dual sword and blade techniques, Zhuo Lianxin's unique talent was necessary. Without it, there would be insurmountable flaws. If he doesn't discover this weakness, this blade technique might later become his Achilles' heel, leading him down a path to his demise."
