Starting Today I'll Work As A City Lord

Chapter 299: Chapter 296

"Tap, tap, tap..."

Kevin, Scott, and their group forcefully dragged away the knights who had been feasting in the first-floor hall, marching aggressively toward the castle. They had to make sure they looked like the victims in this situation.

Under the astonished gazes of the onlookers, they arrived at the square in front of the castle. Seeing the crowd gathered there, they couldn't help but feel surprised.

"What are all these people gathered for?" Kevin asked in confusion.

"Ignore them. We have more important things to deal with before word spreads." Scott said coldly.

"..." Kevin sighed. Even if he managed to escape death this time, things wouldn't be easy for him. He had still failed in his duty regarding Catherine's death. The Fourth Prince would surely hold it against him, pushing him out of the center of power.

"Hmph, in the end, this has nothing to do with us. Our only mistake was getting involved in the first place." Scott said indifferently. This was the allure of power—since they were on the same boat, now that Catherine was in trouble, they had to worry about facing the Duke's punishment.

"I don't need you to teach me anything," Kevin said flatly. This was their own choice—they wanted to climb higher in the ranks of power.

"Go! Team Four, swing your sticks and take down those big oafs from Team One!"

"Team One, defend! Watch out for sneak attacks from those dumb pigs on Team Four!"

"..."

The square was currently hosting the finals of an ice hockey match, and the surrounding commoners were beyond excited. The crowd was even larger than at a boxing match.

"Hal! Hurry up! If you go any slower, the game will be over!" Lola turned his head and shouted at the sluggish Hal.

"Can't you come over and help me carry this?" Hal panted heavily.

He was carrying a large wooden crate filled with lollipops—the two of them were planning to set up a stall outside.

"With that little strength of yours? And you still want to marry me?" Lola scrunched up her chubby face in displeasure. "You're way too weak."

"I..." Hal was at a loss for words, feeling a bit defeated. It was one thing for Miss Ayesha to be stronger than him, but now even this big Lola had more strength than he did.

"What do you mean 'I'? Move it! Aren't you supposed to meet Old Man Peter tonight?" Lola shouted, sighing as she went over to help lift the wooden crate. To earn a little extra money, the two of them had come out to set up a stall.

"..."

Interactions like this between humans and beastkins were not uncommon. For example, after a goal was scored in the match, beastkins and humans supporting the same team embraced each other in excitement.

"This city is... unusual. I want to destroy it." Scott's face darkened as he looked at the scene around him.

Humans coexisting peacefully with beastkins? It was disgraceful. Scott utterly despised beastkins, especially since they consumed more food than humans.

"This City Lord of Sedona is truly rebellious, allowing beastkins to live freely in a human city." Kevin sneered.

He wasn't alone in his disdain. Many of the upper-class nobles of the Kingdom of Siacan shared the same view. To them, seeing humans and beastkins living together as equals was utterly revolting.

They needed slaves to do their labor, and beastkins were the best slaves. Yet these creatures dared to dream of living as equals among humans? The nobles would never allow it.

Every noble owned at least a few beastkin slaves, especially in the inland regions, where beastkins made up the bulk of the labor force. As long as they were given scraps of food, they could be forced to work tirelessly.

To Kevin and Scott, Sedona City and its lord, Lucas, were complete anomalies—heretics who violated the unspoken rules of nobility.

"I've heard that even the Duke despises beastkins," Scott said with a sinister smirk. "Do you think, when he hears that Catherine died at the hands of such a heretical noble, he'll immediately bring his knights here to slaughter them all?"

"Is that even a question?" Kevin sneered. "A lot of beastkins will probably die just to vent his anger."

Ignoring the hockey match, the group headed straight for the castle gates, intending to walk right in.

"Halt! No unauthorized entry!" The guard barked, leveling his spear at them.

"We demand to see Miss Catherine. Report to your superiors at once." Kevin said darkly, irritation flashing across his face—this was the second time today he had been blocked.

"Lord Lucas has ordered that no one is to be seen today." The guard responded coldly.

From the moment Catherine entered the castle, Lucas had already predicted some trouble. A beautiful duke's daughter would never be without a swarm of flies buzzing around her.

"You? Do you even know who I am?" Kevin's face darkened. Since when did a viscount like him get stopped at the gates of some remote baron's castle? Even the gatekeeping knights dared to disrespect him?

"Not interested," The soldier said, shaking his head. He adjusted his spear slightly forward and coldly added, "Leave at once. Lord Lucas is not seeing guests today."

Tap, tap…

Ayesha walked over, glancing briefly at the group before heading straight through the castle gates. She had just finished patrolling the streets and was feeling a bit hungry.

"Why can she go in?!" Kevin demanded. Seeing a female beastkin casually walk into the castle while he, a noble viscount, was left outside only made his expression even darker.

"Miss Ayesha lives in the castle." The soldier responded flatly.

"Outrageous! You must have had a hand in Catherine's death! You're stalling for time!" Scott suddenly shouted at the top of his lungs, making sure everyone nearby could hear.

"Daring to cause trouble right at the gates of the castle?"

A cold voice suddenly sounded from behind. Before Scott could even turn his head, a heavy fist smashed into his face, knocking him out cold.

Eight figures stood before them, radiating an icy, lethal aura—Chris and his team had just returned, only to witness this commotion at the castle gates. Since when had people dared to shout and cause trouble right here?

"You dare attack a noble?!" Kevin's eyes widened in shock as he stared at Scott, who was sprawled unconscious on the ground.

"A noble?" Chris clenched his fists, his sharp gaze sweeping over them. "We only answer to Lord Lucas."

Clang!

"How dare you!" Kevin, burning with fury, drew his knight's longsword and pointed it at Chris and his men.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

The moment Kevin unsheathed his sword, a chain reaction followed—everyone else drew their weapons as well. Steel glinted in the air, and in an instant, the atmosphere turned deadly.

"You're the ones with guts." Chris smirked coldly, tilting his head toward the castle. "Why don't you take a look over there?"

"…"

Kevin frowned and hesitantly turned his head. The sight made his heart jolt in terror. Without hesitation, he quickly raised both hands, his voice shaking slightly.

"We have no ill intentions! Really, no ill intentions!"

On top of the castle walls stood more than a dozen men, each holding a longbow, their arrows ready to be loosed at a moment's notice. At the castle gates, another ten knights stood with spears in hand, their cold gazes locked onto Kevin and his group.

Faced with such overwhelming force, Kevin and the others instantly backed down.

"Whether you have ill intentions or not isn't up to you to decide," Chris said indifferently.

He turned to No. 2 and instructed, "Take them to the Guard Division for a little chat. I'll go report the situation to Lord Lucas."

"Understood!"

No. 2 glanced at Kevin and his companions with a look of pity. They were probably going to spend a few days in a dark little cell. Hopefully, they wouldn't be broken by the experience.

"No! I'm a noble! You can't treat me like this—!"

Kevin's protests were cut short as he and his men were dragged away. As for their fate, that would depend entirely on Lucas's decision.
