Chapter 249: Chapter 249: Prison Break
[Third Person's PoV]
"Do not let them escape! Capture them and bring down the surface world with our machine power!" the Mole Man shouted, thrashing in his bindings as he struggled to break free. His clothes were tattered, and his body was covered in dirt and blood from his wounds.
Nightwing darted through the battlefield, weaving between the Moloids as they lunged at him with sharp claws. His escrima sticks flashed in rapid succession, striking down the creatures mid-air as they leaped toward him. When some managed to cling to his legs, he kicked them off with precise force.
With a swift motion, he connected his escrima sticks, transforming them into a bo staff. He spun it in tight circles, extending his reach and knocking back a group of three Moloids at once.
"Do they ever end?!" Nightwing asked in disbelief, eyes scanning the seemingly endless swarm.
"It doesn't seem like it!" Spider-Kat replied. She shifted into her feline form, pouncing onto a Moloid and scratching its face repeatedly before flipping into the air, transforming back mid-flip, and delivering a powerful kick. She landed gracefully and grinned. "Oh wow, that actually worked!"
High above, Ghost-Spider swung through the cavern, dodging debris while unleashing blasts of energy from her hands. Each shot encased the Moloids in ice upon contact. As she swung, an idea formed in her mind. She flicked her wrist as if firing a web, and a concentrated blue bolt shot from her hand, striking an open section of the ground. The moment it landed, an icy blue patch materialized, instantly freezing a Moloid as soon as it stepped on it.
"Sweet~," she said with a smirk.
"A little help here!!"
They turned to see Ben, completely covered in Moloids, struggling to shake them off. Every time he threw one away, two more jumped onto him.
Susan, trapped inside a force field with Moloids clawing at the barrier, called out, "I got it!"
She extended her arm and steadied it with her other hand, narrowing her eyes in concentration. A force field erupted outward from Ben, sending Moloids flying in all directions.
"Thanks, Sue!" Ben shouted as the last of the creatures were thrown off him. Without missing a beat, he charged toward an approaching Excavation Unit as the forcefield retreated, its massive drill spinning toward Reed.
Reed, focused on something else, had his back turned and could barely see in the dimly lit cavern. The echoing of multiple machines made it difficult to pinpoint the one directly behind him.
"Look out!" Ben bellowed as he threw himself in front of the drill. It slammed into his rocky body, sending chunks of debris flying as it dug into his skin.
Ben roared in pain but grabbed onto the spinning drill, his muscles shaking as he forced it to slow down. With one final push, he crushed the drill flat with his bare hands.
"BEN!" Reed shouted, both shocked and concerned. He stretched toward his friend, eyes scanning the damage—a deep indentation in Ben's rocky stomach. But within moments, the stone-like skin reformed, sealing the wound.
"Relax, string bean," Ben huffed. "Just focus on yourself."
Reed smiled and patted Ben's massive shoulder. "Thanks for having my back, big guy."
Ben simply grunted in response before gripping the Excavation Unit with both hands. With a roar, he lifted it off the ground. As he took several steps forward, Reed enlarged his hands and began swatting away the Moloids surrounding them.
Ben spun in place, using the massive machine like a wrecking ball. The Moloids clinging to it panicked and scrambled away. Mid-spin, Ben spotted Johnny's flames illuminating another Excavation Unit in the distance. With a mighty grunt, he hurled the first machine straight toward the second.
The Moloids riding the second machine sensed the incoming impact and leaped off, scattering in all directions. Moments later, the two machines collided, erupting into flames and leaving behind a smoldering wreck of fiery debris.
Meanwhile, as Spider-Man webbed down a group of Moloids, Aria's voice appeared in his HUD.
"We have another problem…"
"Seriously?! What now?" Spider-Man asked in disbelief.
"The earthquake caused a major power outage, which has affected a nearby prison. Inmates are running loose, and there are police casualties as we speak," Aria reported.
Spider-Man let out a sigh. "Alright, I'll handle it."
"I'll come help!" Scarlet-Spider said, swinging next to him.
"Much appreciated," Spider-Man replied, but his attention quickly shifted. Up ahead, in one of the many tunnel entrances, Moloids were rolling boulders, preparing to rain them down on everyone.
Shooting a web at the ceiling, Spider-Man flipped upside down, his feet sticking to the webbing. He slowly began spinning, then rapidly fired compressed web bullets from his wrists, their speed enhanced by his bio-electricity and his new ability.
The webs shot out like turret fire, shattering the boulders on impact and sending rubble flying everywhere.
"Come on, we need to get there—quick," Spider-Man said, firing a web toward one of the tunnel entrances.
Scarlet-Spider followed. As Spider-Man landed by the entrance, he held out his arms, catching Scarlet-Spider as she dropped down.
"Hold on!" he warned.
She wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her head close.
Spider-Man lunged forward, electricity crackling around both of them.
In an instant, he turned into a blur. The ground beneath them erupted from the sheer force of his strength and speed, sending chunks of rock into the air.
From Aria's aerial POV, Spider-Man moved rapidly through the underground tunnels, zigzagging through them with inhuman precision.
"Was there a reason you wanted to accompany me, or was this just a spur-of-the-moment decision?" Spider-Man asked curiously.
"I needed to rest my eyes for a bit. I figured if I came with you, I'd get a chance to do that while still being useful," Scarlet-Spider admitted, a little shyly.
"Your eyes? What's wrong with them?" Spider-Man asked as he ran along the walls.
"If I use them for too long consecutively, I get dry eyes. I have to keep them shut until they rehydrate," she explained, keeping her eyes closed.
"I see… Now that you mention it, I've realized a major downside to your abilities."
Scarlet-Spider sighed. "Yeah, me too. Even though I have multiple powers, I'm also the most vulnerable. If any of my eyes get injured or ripped out, I might lose those abilities permanently. You and the others don't have that problem, huh?"
"We'll need to make you a protective mask," Spider-Man said as he shot a web out of the sinkhole and swung up. He landed on a standing building and gently set her down.
As he knelt, Scarlet-Spider grinned mischievously. "Oh my God, yes!" she squealed, creating a ring using her psionics and slipping it onto her finger. "I do!"
Spider-Man chuckled, shaking his head. "Pfft. Just get on—we've got places to be. I thought you were resting your eyes."
"Sorry, couldn't help it," she giggled, hopping onto his back and wrapping her arms around his neck again.
As he stood, she added, "Besides, I think my eyes can handle one comedic moment."
"Hold on tight," Spider-Man warned once more before bursting forward in a blur of motion, a blur of blue and red flashed by like lightning as he ran and leaped across the rooftops.
Scarlet-Spider buried her face into his neck, holding on tightly.
"Alright, Aria, be honest with me— We're heading towards one of the Prisons where one of my rogues are being kept, aren't I?"
"Three, actually. Two you've faced before, and one who hasn't made an appearance yet," Aria confirmed.
"What? Who?" Scarlet-Spider asked in disbelief.
"The prison you're heading to is where the Tinkerer and the Lizard were being held. As for the third… It's Herman Schultz. Aka the Shocker," Aria informed him.
Spider-Man groaned. "Didn't you mention before that Tinkerer and Herman were cellmates?"
"Yes. I also reported the potential creation of the Shocker gauntlets, which were properly confiscated," Aria reminded him.
"Let me guess—he got them back during the chaos," Spider-Man deadpanned as he swung around a corner and ran alongside a building.
Aria snickered. "Wow, Daddy, that's some amazing detective work. How'd you know? He just put them on… or so I believe. I tried to stop them with a Spider-Bot, but as I restrained Herman, Tinkerer destroyed it. Based on my calculations, they've already retrieved the gloves."
"What about the Spider-Bot watching Dr. Connors? Is he up to something?" Scarlet-Spider asked, casually placing a hand on her chest.
"Surprisingly, no. He's still in his cell, just sitting there with the door wide open. He's not even trying to escape," Aria responded, a hint of surprise in her voice.
Spider-Man wasn't shocked. "I'm not surprised…"
Below them, sirens blared as cop cars sped toward the prison.
"Dr. Connors is a good man. He's made terrible decisions, but he's not inherently bad. He was a desperate man forced to take drastic measures," Spider-Man said.
Scarlet-Spider scoffed. "Yeah, like clawing me in the chest."
