Chapter 2: Ancient One
Battle Scene in New York
A portal opened in New York with the "Space Stone," and through this portal, thousands of Chitauri soldiers entered Earth's atmosphere. The citizens of Earth experienced their first extraterrestrial warfare. It was something none of the governments on the planet had ever imagined. It was as if the question, "Are we alone in the universe?" was answered, but in a violent way. However, there was one person who understood the possible threats from outer space: Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He created an initiative named "The Avengers," the mightiest heroes of Earth who would protect the planet from unimaginable threats. His hard work proved him right because, thanks to him, Earth was prepared for such attacks.
On the New York battlefield, we could see Captain America passing strategic orders to Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor—the god of thunder—and Hawkeye. But there was one big green guy whose orders were simple: SMASH!! Even though the Chitauri army had thousands of soldiers, they were overwhelmed for a certain duration due to the Avengers. Loki was frustrated because of the Avengers, and the only thing he could do was bring in more soldiers. To counter the alien army, the U.S. government sent as many troops as they could.
But amidst all the commotion, there was someone who went unnoticed—a woman with orange fans, not made of any material but pure energy. Any alien who came near a certain building was instantly killed by the wave of fans from that woman, as if she was only protecting the building and didn't care about anything else. She had a visit from someone we can't call a regular human, Professor Hulk. After a long conversation, she gave him the precious treasure of Kamar-Taj, the "Time Stone," and just like that, Hulk was gone. At the same moment, a man with Mjolnir appeared—but he was not Thor—and returned her "Time Stone," as if she had never given it to anyone.
The world governments collectively decided to nuke the city, thinking it would be better to kill thousands to save millions. A nuke missile was launched from an F-35, aiming straight for New York. But little did the world governments know, the Avengers had already taken the initiative. Black Widow was ready with Loki's scepter to close the portal, and Iron Man directed the nuke toward the portal, launching himself into it. In doing so, he caught a glimpse of the real Chitauri army. The size of the army was beyond his comprehension, and their sheer numbers would haunt him in the future and lead to the formation of Ultron.
When the Ancient One saw the nuke, she activated the Time Stone as a precaution, but it was never needed, as the Avengers had already saved the day. Once she was sure that New York was safe, she ensured that all the relics in her possession were secure. She disposed of all the Chitauri corpses by sending them into unknown space. Ready to return to Kamar-Taj, she knew that this was not the end of a hectic day and that a new individual was going to give her a headache.
Back to Kamar-Taj
Ancient One: "Kaecilius, bring me some tea, and please don't disturb me if I go to sleep. Also, take care of your juniors and train them today. I've had a very tiresome day."
Kaecilius: "Are you hurt, Master? I mean, the battle was quite ferocious."
Ancient One: "Don't worry, I am only tired, nothing more. Please take care of the tea. And is there anything unusual today? I have a little gut feeling."
Kaecilius: "Sorry to burden you, but there is an individual seeking you. Even I have never met him, but he already knew my name. I made him stay outside Kamar-Taj and sent some juniors to keep an eye on him. He is waiting for your arrival. Do you want me to send him away, or should I ask him to come over?"
Ancient One, smiling: "This is why you are my best student. Don't send him away. I will have a conversation with him. Who knows what secrets he carries with him?"
With this, the Ancient One and Kaecilius went outside to meet William. Kaecilius pointed in the direction of William, who was looking up at the beautiful sky. With just a snap of her fingers, the Ancient One teleported Kaecilius and William into the monastery.
For Kaecilius, this was normal, but for William, everything was new. His heart was beating faster, and he was breaking out in a cold sweat. But he was most shocked to find the Ancient One in front of him, who might look like a fragile human but could go toe-to-toe with gods if she wanted to. This woman had the knowledge of thousands of books and had held the title of Sorcerer Supreme for more than a century.
Ancient One, surprised, looking at Kaecilius: "Did I overdo it?" Then she apologized to William, saying, "I'm sorry. I thought you were prepared for all of this when I heard you knew our identity."
William, regaining his composure: "What do you expect from someone who just had his meal and was looking at the gorgeous sky?" Suddenly, he realized he had forgotten something essential in every Asian culture—"TO SHOW RESPECT." Without another thought, he dropped to his knees and bowed his head, saying, "I apologize for my rude behavior."
Kaecilius and the Ancient One were surprised by William's actions and smiled. Ancient One: "Stand up, young man. You have shown enough respect." She then ordered Kaecilius to arrange tea for both her and William.
Ancient One: "So, what is the purpose of your visit? I can clearly see you're not a native. And don't lie."
William wasn't in the mood for beating around the bush. He had one intention, and he wasn't going back without learning magic. With determination, William said, "I am William Mendoza from Bozeman, Montana, USA. The only reason I am here is to gain knowledge and learn astral magic."
Ancient One, with a neutral expression: "Okay. Then we will teach you magic and give you the knowledge. Is there anything else you want to ask?"
William was shocked to hear that his request was accepted so easily, as if it was the luckiest day the gods could have provided him. It was as if all the good karma he had acquired in his previous life was exhausted in this one moment. William asked in shock, "That's it? I mean, that's it? No further questions?"
Ancient One: "Sometimes, that is enough. Not all person in the world have to have some grand purpose some have very simple one just like you. It depends on the person if he have courage to work on his simple goals and fight the odd related to it. Or choose some grand purpose but don't have enough courage to face it. Very well, William Mendoza. We shall see what you are capable of. But know this—magic is not just about power. It's about understanding. Understanding yourself, the universe, and your place within it. Your training begins tomorrow. Prepare yourself."
William was so happy he could have screamed with joy, but he managed to keep his composure, at least for now. He remembered one last thing he had planned. Reaching into his bag, he pulled out a box filled with an assortment of fine desserts and snacks—the kind you could only find in the most high-end shops in America.
William: "As a token of my gratitude, please accept this gift. These are some of the best treats you can find back home."
The Ancient One raised an eyebrow, intrigued. Kaecilius leaned closer, clearly curious.
Ancient One, smiling softly: "How thoughtful of you, William. It's not every day that a new student brings us such a gift. Thank you."
They sat down together, the atmosphere relaxing as they sampled the treats. William was surprised to see both the Ancient One and Kaecilius enjoy the sweets with genuine appreciation.
Kaecilius, munching on a cookie: "These are quite delightful. I can see why they're considered special."
William, grinning: "Glad you like them. Back in the States, I used to save up just to buy a box for myself every once in a while."
The Ancient One nodded, setting her tea down. Her expression softened, and she seemed genuinely interested in hearing more about William's life.
Ancient One: "Tell us more about your life in America, William. I'm curious to hear about what brought you to us."
William took a deep breath and began to share stories about his upbringing in Montana, his struggles and triumphs as a student, and his journey from college to becoming the head designer at an industrial company. He spoke about how he always felt a pull towards something more, something beyond the ordinary, which eventually led him here.
The Ancient One listened intently, her eyes reflecting a mix of amusement and understanding. After a while, she began to share her own experiences.
Ancient One: "During the battle in New York, I saw many things—things that would unsettle even the bravest of souls. The Chitauri were relentless, but the Avengers fought with great courage. It reminded me of the times when we too had to defend our world from threats unknown to most."
Her words painted vivid pictures in William's mind, and he found himself hanging on her every word, imagining the chaos and bravery she described. Kaecilius occasionally chimed in, adding his own observations and making William feel like he was part of something much bigger than himself.
After what felt like hours of sharing stories and laughter, the Ancient One looked at William with a warm, approving gaze.
Ancient One: "You have much to learn, William. But tonight, rest. Tomorrow, your training begins, and it will not be easy. You'll need your strength."
Feeling a wave of gratitude and excitement, William nodded. He was shown to a simple, but comfortable dorm room—a place he would now call home. As he lay down to rest, he couldn't help but feel a sense of belonging. For the first time in a long while, he felt like he was exactly where he was meant to be.
