Chapter 22: Chapter 22: At the Gates
The facility loomed ahead, its massive structure casting long shadows over the broken terrain. The closer they got, the more unnatural it seemed—its smooth, metallic surface pulsed faintly with a blue light, as if the entire building was alive.
"Proximity: 500 meters," Solus said in Ishizaki's mind. "Hostile units detected. Stealth is recommended."
Ishizaki tightened his grip on his knife, his legs trembling as he crouched low behind a cluster of jagged rocks. The others huddled close behind him, their faces pale and tense.
"This place gives me the creeps," Drax muttered, his hammer resting on his shoulder.
"You're not the only one," the stranger replied, her gaze fixed on the facility. "That thing's not just a building. It's a fortress."
Closing the Distance
The group moved cautiously, using the uneven terrain to stay hidden. The hum of drones echoed faintly in the distance, but the immediate area seemed clear—for now.
"Solus, what are we looking at?" Ishizaki whispered, his voice barely audible.
"Facility design incorporates advanced Q-Energy integration," Solus replied. "Purpose remains unknown. Observations suggest a blend of research and manufacturing capabilities."
"Research for what?" Ishizaki asked.
"Insufficient data," Solus said.
The stranger glanced at him, her expression unreadable. "Whatever it is, it's not good," she said. "Places like this don't exist to make the world better."
Hana clung to Drax's arm, her small frame trembling. "Do we really have to go in there?" she asked.
"We don't have a choice," Ishizaki said, though his voice faltered.
Reflection and Strain
The group paused in the shadow of a crumbled wall, taking a moment to catch their breath. Ishizaki leaned heavily against the cold stone, his chest heaving as he tried to steady himself.
"You're running on fumes, kid," Drax said, his tone laced with concern.
"I'm fine," Ishizaki replied, though his trembling hands betrayed his words.
"No, you're not," the stranger said, sitting across from him. "You're pushing yourself too hard. You're going to burn out before we even get inside."
Ishizaki met her gaze, his jaw tightening. "If I stop now, we all die."
The stranger didn't argue, but her expression softened slightly. "You've got guts, I'll give you that," she said. "But guts won't mean much if you collapse when we need you most."
Hana and Ryo sat nearby, their eyes wide with fear as they stared at the facility. Mei huddled close to them, her blanket clutched tightly in her hands.
"Are we really going to be okay?" Hana asked, her voice small.
Ishizaki knelt beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "We'll be fine," he said, his voice steady despite the doubt gnawing at him.
"You're lying," Mei said quietly, her eyes fixed on the ground.
Ishizaki didn't reply.
Reaching the Entrance
They reached the base of the facility, where a massive entrance loomed ahead. The heavy doors were lined with intricate patterns that pulsed faintly with energy, and two drones hovered nearby, their red eyes scanning the area.
"Defenses detected," Solus said. "Automated drones and energy-based locking mechanisms. Breach will require precision and stealth."
"Any chance we can just knock?" Drax asked, his tone dry.
The stranger smirked faintly. "Only if you're in the mood to get vaporized."
"What's the plan?" Ishizaki asked.
Solus projected a faint map of the entrance in Ishizaki's mind. "Primary objective: disable the drones. Secondary objective: override the locking mechanism. Time to complete: two minutes."
"Two minutes?" Drax said, his eyes widening. "You've got to be kidding me."
"Can you handle the lock?" Ishizaki asked the stranger.
She nodded. "I'll need cover," she said.
Ishizaki glanced at Drax, then at the kids. "Stay back and stay quiet," he said.
The Final Barrier
As the stranger approached the control panel, the drones' red eyes flared, their weapons powering up.
"Hostile activity detected," Solus said.
"Here we go," Ishizaki muttered, his knife glowing faintly as he stepped forward.
Drax swung his hammer at the nearest drone, sending it crashing into the ground. The second drone swiveled toward him, but Ishizaki darted forward, his enhanced reflexes carrying him past its line of fire.
"Working on the lock!" the stranger shouted, her fingers flying over the control panel.
A sudden alarm blared, its piercing wail echoing through the air. The ground beneath them began to tremble, and the doors of the facility shuddered as they began to open.
"What did you do?" Drax shouted.
The stranger's eyes widened as she stared at the control panel. "That's not me," she said.
The chapter ends with the doors opening to reveal a blinding light and the sound of footsteps approaching from within.
The facility's massive doors groaned as they slid open, the sound reverberating through the air like the roar of a beast. A wave of cold air rushed out, carrying with it the faint scent of ozone and something metallic.
"Stay close," Ishizaki said, his voice low but firm.
The group moved cautiously into the opening, their footsteps echoing against the smooth metallic floor. The interior was bathed in an eerie blue light that pulsed faintly along the walls, casting shifting shadows that made the space feel alive.
"This place…" Drax muttered, his hammer resting on his shoulder. "It's like nothing I've ever seen."
"It's designed to intimidate," the stranger said, her gaze sweeping the corridor ahead. "And it's working."
Crossing the Threshold
The walls were lined with glowing panels, their surfaces etched with intricate patterns that seemed to shift and flow like liquid. Pipes and conduits ran along the ceiling, occasionally releasing bursts of mist that hissed softly before dissipating.
"Facility design suggests a blend of research and containment functions," Solus said in Ishizaki's mind. "Purpose remains unclear. Caution is advised."
"Noted," Ishizaki replied under his breath.
The kids stayed close to Drax, their wide eyes darting between the strange sights around them. Hana clutched her blanket tightly, while Mei's gaze lingered on the glowing walls with a mix of fear and fascination.
"Is it safe?" Ryo asked, his voice trembling.
"No," the stranger said bluntly. "But we'll make it through."
First Observations
The group entered a large chamber filled with strange devices and machinery. Tables lined with broken tools and half-assembled parts suggested that the room had been abandoned in a hurry.
"What happened here?" Drax asked, his brow furrowing as he examined the mess.
"Experimentation," the stranger said, her tone grim. She ran her fingers over a cracked console, her expression darkening. "They were testing something. Something big."
Ishizaki felt a strange sense of familiarity as he moved through the chamber, his eyes scanning the room for clues. His chest tightened as he approached a large display screen, its surface flickering with distorted images.
"Solus," he said quietly. "Can you read this?"
"Attempting decryption," Solus replied. "Data integrity compromised. Partial translation available."
The screen flickered again, displaying a single phrase: "Project Ascension – Phase III Operational."
"What does that mean?" Ishizaki asked, his stomach sinking.
"Unknown," Solus said. "Further analysis required."
The stranger's gaze snapped to the screen, her expression a mix of recognition and dread. "Phase III?" she muttered. "That's impossible."
"What do you know?" Ishizaki asked, stepping closer.
"Not enough," she said, her tone guarded. "But whatever they were doing here—it wasn't just about Q-Energy. They were pushing boundaries no one should cross."
A Sudden Threat
A sharp beep echoed through the chamber, followed by the faint whir of machinery powering up. The group froze as a red light bathed the room, illuminating a sleek drone descending from the ceiling.
"Hostile detected," Solus said. "Combat readiness advised."
The drone's weapons hummed as it locked onto the group.
"Down!" Ishizaki shouted, pushing the kids behind a console as the first volley of plasma fire streaked across the room.
Drax charged forward with a roar, his hammer smashing into the drone's frame. Sparks flew as the machine staggered, but it recovered quickly, its weapons swiveling toward him.
"Keep it distracted!" the stranger shouted, pulling a small device from her belt.
"What are you doing?" Ishizaki asked, his knife glowing faintly as he prepared to strike.
"Ending this," she said, her hands flying over the device's controls.
The drone fired again, forcing Ishizaki to dart to the side. His enhanced reflexes carried him closer to the machine, and he drove his blade into a joint, severing one of its limbs.
"Now!" the stranger shouted, slamming her device onto the drone's frame. A burst of energy erupted, shorting out its circuits and sending it crashing to the ground.
The group stood in silence for a moment, their breaths heavy.
"That was too close," Drax muttered, lowering his hammer.
A Major Discovery
As the group moved deeper into the facility, they entered a vast, dimly lit chamber. The air was heavy, and the faint hum of machinery filled the space.
In the center of the room stood a massive containment pod, its surface glowing faintly with energy. Frost clung to the glass, obscuring whatever was inside.
"What is that?" Hana asked, her voice trembling.
Ishizaki approached cautiously, his knife at the ready. "Solus?"
"Analysis inconclusive," Solus said. "Containment protocols detected. Warning: tampering not advised."
The stranger stepped forward, her expression unreadable. "This… this shouldn't be here," she said quietly.
"What do you mean?" Ishizaki asked.
Before she could answer, the pod emitted a low hiss, and the glass began to crack.
"Get back!" Drax shouted, pulling the kids away.
