Chapter 221: Chapter 222: One Slash, One Kill
Kōga listened to the repeated chants of release without lifting his gaze toward the battlefield, yet the outcome was already within his expectations.
In the next moment, a clear sound of a blade piercing a spiritual body reached his ears…
"It's over already?"
"So fast," he mused inwardly, his thoughts already turning to future matters.
Interestingly, what occupied Kōga's mind wasn't where he would be buried, but rather how he should proceed from here.
The clash between the Visoreds and Aizen had unexpectedly yielded him a wealth of materialized Zanpakutō spirits for combat. This newfound power swelled Kōga's confidence.
Although he acknowledged that his direct combat strength still fell short compared to the Gotei 13, he believed that Muramasa's ability to materialize and turn enemy Zanpakutō spirits against their wielders could potentially even the odds.
"As long as I'm not instantly defeated, this battle of attrition could ultimately tip in my favor," Kōga thought.
'When that time comes, I might just emulate Yamamoto Genryūsai and establish a new order to rule over Seireitei. I could become the true king of this realm!'
The mere thought ignited a fervor within him, as if he had found a guiding light for his future.
However, his grandiose daydream was abruptly shattered by the sound of spiritual bodies being pierced once again.
Kōga's expression darkened with rage.
But when he raised his eyes, what met his gaze was entirely different from what he had imagined.
Indeed, Unohana was drenched in blood, but it wasn't her own. Instead, at her feet lay countless fallen Zanpakutō spirits—pierced, bisected, or decapitated.
The sight sent a chill through Kōga's entire being, while Makoto could only lament inwardly…
"So many valuable research subjects, gone!"
Although he had already extracted the crucial information he needed from Senbonzakura, Makoto, ever meticulous in his research, lamented the loss of additional samples.
Yet those spirits that made Makoto's heart itch with desire continued to charge at Unohana like moths to a flame.
"One slash, one kill!"
It truly was one slash, one kill!
Whether the spirits belonged to vice-captain-level or captain-level Zanpakutō, they made no difference before Unohana—all were dispatched with a single stroke!
Even Makoto found this scene bewildering. Despite being under the influence of the interfering abilities of Zanpakutō Sogyo no kotowari and Kinshara, Unohana slaughtered them effortlessly, her graceful yet bloody movements resembling a macabre dance of death.
Her sword, sweeping in grand arcs like a crimson crescent moon, and the hidden dagger in her sleeve, striking with deadly precision…
From afar, Makoto could only watch in awe as Unohana seemed to perform an elegant and deadly waltz, each step accompanied by a spray of blood.
A sense of despair crept into Makoto's heart.
"So this is the legendary master of over eight thousand sword styles, the one once known as 'Unohana Yachiru'?"
If he ever wanted to usurp his master, how powerful would he need to become?
Of course… cough… that was purely hypothetical. If anyone asked, Makoto would insist he was a virtuous and respectful disciple of the healing arts.
While both Kōga and Makoto felt despair, their experiences were vastly different.
"It's over!"
In the blink of an eye, the materialized Zanpakutō Sogyo no kotowari and Kinshara were cut down, blood spraying like a crimson rain.
Unohana, bathed in blood, wore an expression of ecstasy that made Kōga's pores contract in terror.
At this point, only Muramasa and the long-range-capable Senbonzakura and Shinsō remained of Kōga's once formidable force. Yet even they failed to give him any sense of security.
"I'm going to die!"
There was no doubt in Kōga's mind—he would die here.
As Unohana, drenched in blood, approached him step by step with an elegant gait, Kōga's mind inexplicably recalled her earlier words:
"I will kill you…"
Fear gripped Kōga as he retreated, screaming hysterically, "Muramasa, stop this monster!"
Muramasa, whose expression was usually eerily composed, narrowed his eyes with grim resolve and charged at Unohana in a frenzy.
Yet, while Muramasa launched a desperate assault, Kōga had no intention of fighting alongside his Zanpakutō. Without hesitation, he bolted towards Makoto.
Unohana's gaze turned colder as she noticed Kōga's actions. Her figure blurred as she used Shunpo, crossing paths with Muramasa.
"Slash!"
Despite Muramasa's captain-level strength after materialization, his spiritual body was split in two. His upper half fell forward with inertia while his lower half continued the motion of flash-stepping before collapsing to the ground.
Even in his final moments, Muramasa's dimming eyes caught sight of Kōga fleeing. Summoning his last strength, he pointed at Senbonzakura and Shinsō:
"Stop her… Give our master time!"
Under Muramasa's dying influence, Senbonzakura and Shinsō launched a desperate assault, attempting to hinder Unohana.
Petals of Senbonzakura filled the air, while Shinsō thrust and flickered rapidly.
Yet none of it slowed Unohana's advance.
With a graceful yet brutal flourish, her sword and hidden dagger severed Shinsō and scattered the petals of Senbonzakura without allowing a single one to touch her. She charged relentlessly towards the green-haired figure in her sights.
The gap between them, however, was insurmountable.
Despite her superior speed, the interference caused by Muramasa, Senbonzakura, and Shinsō delayed her just enough for Kōga to reach Makoto first.
For the first time, Unohana cursed her earlier indulgence in slaughter.
If only she had stationed herself beside Makoto from the start…
If only her Zanpakutō had a long-range attack!
She came to a halt, five steps away, staring coldly at Kōga, whose blade now rested against Makoto's neck.
