Chapter 826: The Ultimate Reunion
When the gentlemen didn't answer her, Scarlett wondered if she made a mistake by assuming that they were some random travelers.
She finally thought that maybe they weren't there to ask for directions or water from her, but they were there for some other reason. However, she couldn't quite guess what that reason might be.
Thus, as she walked towards those gentlemen while squinting her eyes, she asked, "Umm… do I know–"
However, she was suddenly interrupted as well as startled when she heard one of them angrily shouting at the other man.
"Damien! Take me back!"
Scarlett was confused as to why that young man was suddenly angry.
Not just angry, but enraged.
And she couldn't help but feel that though that young man was shouting at his friend, his anger was actually directed at her.
In her confusion, she kept on walking closer and closer to the entrance of her garden, wondering what she might have possibly done to anger the gentleman who wanted to get away from there that badly.
Suddenly, when she locked her eyes on the blurry figure of the man with blond hair, it hit her.
She stopped her foot that was raised midair when the horrible memories of the past came flooding in.
Scarlett had committed a great sin in the past, a sin so great that she felt suffocated by it every day. A sin so great that her life had become a living hell for her. The hell that was created as a result of the insurmountable guilt and sorrow that had clogged her heart… all because of the one terrible decision that she had made in the past.
'Could it be…?'
"I said, TAKE ME BACK!"
"Mmh…" she grimaced in pain and closed her eyes.
Scarlett suddenly felt a sharp shooting pain running down her chest when she heard that aggressive scream that was so full of hate and pain that she was almost sure she wasn't mistaken about that man's identity.
She hung her head low and wondered, 'Could it be him?'
Scarlett's lips trembled as she took a deep breath from her mouth. And the sentences that she had engraved in her heart started to echo in her ears. 'You foolish child! How will you meet him if you throw your life away? Live. And he will come to you.'
She wiped the sweat beads that had formed along her hairline and thought, 'That witch had told me that he would come looking for me… I had already given up my hopes but… is he finally here?'
She gulped really painfully and decided to take a peek. Read new chapters at My Virtual Library Empire
It took a great deal of courage for her to actually bring herself to open her eyes and lift her head. However, her vision had gotten even blurrier than before because of the tears that had accumulated at the rims of her eyes.
Scarlett sniffled and quickly wiped her eyes with her palms. She felt restless. She wanted to get closer to that gentleman so that she could ask him if he had come looking for her.
With the newfound determination, she strode forward.
Slowly, the blurry face of the gentleman started to appear clearer and clearer as she slowly kept on walking toward him.
And when her eyes captured the crystal-clear image of the blond-haired man, she immediately covered her mouth with her palm and shook her head in utter disbelief.
'No… it can't be…' she wondered if she was imagining things when she looked at her spitting image in the form of that tall young man.
She clutched her palms over her heart and kept on staring at Kenneth for a while. Her soft gaze was stuck on Kenneth's bright red pair of eyes – the same pair of crystal red eyes that she thought she would never see again. 'Is it really…'
"My son…?" she questioned her own vision thinking that they were deceiving her.
The softest whisper that had unintentionally managed to escape her lips managed to completely silence the angry young man who was, at this point, howling at his friend.
For a second, Scarlett thought that she had brought wrath upon herself when that man slowly turned to look at her. She had thought that she would meet a glare full of spite and hatred.
However, she was so glad that she was wrong.
Just moments ago, those very eyes that were looking as though they would kill people just with one cold glare from them were now looking like the pair of kindest eyes that she had ever seen. His eyes were so full of warmth and longing that she couldn't help but speak her mind.
"My dear son! It is really you!"
Scarlett suddenly became so emotional upon finally meeting her long-lost son that her knees grew weak. The son whom she had waited to meet for decades was now finally standing at her doorstep. Her heart was filled with a mixture of emotions, from ecstasy to anguish and guilt.
And she ended up falling down to her knees and letting her tears roll freely down her face.
"My… son… is here!" she covered her face with her palms and began to sob in a rather celebratory tone, trying to convince herself that her yearning had finally come true.
Kenneth, on the other hand, was standing right where he was as if he was a stone statue. When Scarlett greeted him as some stranger, he thought that she wasn't even ready to acknowledge his presence. However, when she finally addressed him as her son, he was happy, but at the same time, confused.
He was confused because, for all these years, Kenneth had already accepted that his birthparents had abandoned him because of what he was. A hybrid. A monster that most people despised. He was sure that his birthparents also hated his very existence.
However, upon seeing the reaction, it didn't seem as though he was purposely abandoned by his birthparents. Well, at least not by his birthmother.
'Was I perhaps abandoned by my birthfather? Was she forced to comply with him because he didn't want me?' A completely different set of questions began to run through his mind.
And he didn't know how to approach the crying lady, who was sobbing as if she was letting out all the pain that was cooped up in her heart for several years.
On the other hand, when both Scarlett and Kenneth had finally acknowledged that the two of them were indeed blood-related to each other, Damien was impatiently waiting for Kenneth to do what he came to do – meet his birthmother and lay out all the questions that he had for her in front of her.
Seeing Kenneth unmoving, Damien gave a gentle nudge to him on the shoulder and motivated him, "Well, go on then. What are you waiting for?"
Kenneth let go of the breath that he was holding when Damien suddenly pushed him forward. With glassy eyes, he slowly inched towards his birthmother who he had longed to meet.
And when he reached right in front of her, although he didn't know how to break the ice, he sat by her side and awkwardly touched her hand. He wanted to hold her hand.
However, as soon as Scarlett felt those icy cold fingertips brushing against her knuckles, her suppressed trauma relapsed.
And even though it wasn't her intention to do so, she gasped and abruptly pulled her hands away from Kenneth.
