Chapter 18: The Path Begins
Ajax had always dreamed of attending the same magical institution as his sister, Arrow. He wanted nothing more than to be by her side—to protect her from the harsh criticisms she faced as the eldest but not the strongest. But his parents, Athena and Alex, had other plans.
They believed Arrow needed space to grow without the constant comparison to her prodigious younger brother. She needed the chance to focus on her studies without his shadow looming over her. So they made their decision—Ajax would enroll in a different academy, in a different city.
Bizville City.
Ajax had hoped he could at least stay in Aegisville, their home city, so he could still see Emy, his only true friend. But his parents refused. They explained that if he stayed close, it would be too difficult for them to resist seeing him every day, making it harder for him to grow on his own.
And just like that, Ajax realized he was about to leave behind everything familiar.
Making friends had always been a challenge for him, and now, he was heading to a place where he knew no one. The thought was daunting, but there was no escaping it. He had no choice but to leave.
When Ajax arrived at Terra Academy, the towering buildings and sprawling courtyards should have inspired awe. But instead, they only made him feel small.
The grandeur of the institution paled in comparison to the comfort of home.
That night, as he lay in bed, his thoughts swirled with uncertainty. The unfamiliarity of everything weighed on him, pressing down like an invisible force.
Then, something strange happened.
Darkness swallowed the world around him, and he found himself in nothingness once again.
"It's been a while," a familiar voice said.
Ajax blinked. God. The very being who had reincarnated him into this world.
"I almost forgot about you," Ajax admitted.
God chuckled, his voice echoing through the void. "You're a big boy now. You've come far." There was a hint of pride in his tone. "I wanted to tell you that your true purpose in this world starts now. Approach everything with care."
A sudden thought struck Ajax, something that had lingered in his mind for a long time.
"Are the abilities I chose enough to complete the task?"
God's response was cryptic yet filled with wisdom.
"That will depend on you. How you use your magic will determine the outcome."
Ajax nodded slowly, absorbing the weight of those words. "Okay."
With that, the conversation ended, and Ajax was pulled back into reality. The darkness faded, and he found himself staring up at the ceiling.
His true purpose…?
He had no idea what it was.
But whatever it was, it had begun.
The next day, Ajax stood at the front of the classroom as the new student.
The teacher introduced him with a single sentence:
"This is Ajax, son of Athena and Alex."
He braced himself for the usual reactions—the hushed excitement, the admiration, the envious whispers.
But instead… nothing.
Confused murmurs spread through the room. Students turned to one another, whispering.
"Who?"
"Never heard of them."
Ajax froze.
Back home, his parents were legends. Their names alone commanded respect. But here, in Bizville… they were nobodies.
For the first time, he wasn't the son of heroes.
He was just another student.
Something inside him twisted—part relief, part anxiety. He had always relied on his parents' status to shield him from the awkwardness of socializing. But now, he was on his own.
With a quiet nod, he took his seat, feeling the weight of reality settle in.
A Lesson in History
The first lecture delved into a fascinating subject—incarceration spells and why they had nearly vanished from modern magic.
Centuries ago, the Umbraxis, a powerful race of dark mages, were known for casting spells without incantations. Their magic flowed as naturally as breathing, making them nearly unstoppable in battle.
But after the Rebellion War, the Elementara—the dominant magic users—realized their greatest weakness. Incantations, while powerful, took time. Time they often didn't have.
Determined to overcome this flaw, they studied the Umbraxis, seeking a way to wield magic without verbal commands.
Through years of research and countless experiments, they developed a technique—mana circulation.
By allowing mana to flow through their bodies like blood, they could bypass the need for incantations entirely. While spellcasting with incantations remained stronger in sheer power, this new method was far more efficient and practical in combat.
Ajax listened, but his mind wandered—to Arrow, to Emy, to the cryptic words God had left him with.
His true purpose… What did it mean?
Would he find the answers here?
Or would he have to carve his own path?
As the day wore on, a strange feeling settled in Ajax's chest.
For the first time in his life… he was alone.
No parents. No Emy. No one expecting greatness from him.
The thought was unsettling.
But buried beneath that unease was something else.
Freedom.
This was his journey now. His, and his alone.
All that was left was to see where it would take him.
