Shadows Never Speak

Chapter 10: Threads of the Forgotten

Part 1: A Message from the Past

Elliot sat hunched over his desk, the first rays of dawn creeping through the blinds and casting faint lines of light across the chaos in his apartment. Emily's notebook and the leather-bound book from the factory lay open in front of him, their contents now painfully familiar yet still incomprehensible in parts.

Beside them sat a printout of the article he'd dug up the night before—"Local Authorities Investigate Hale Property Following Reports of Ritual Activity." He read it again, his eyes lingering on the mention of The Circle.

A knock at the door shattered the silence, sharp and insistent.

Elliot tensed, his gaze snapping toward the door. He wasn't expecting anyone. His first thought was The Circle—had they come for him already? Slowly, he stood, grabbing the heavy glass paperweight from his desk.

"Who is it?" he called out, his voice steady despite the tension in his chest.

"It's me," came a familiar voice. Daniel.

Elliot hesitated for only a moment before unlocking the door. Daniel stood in the hallway, his face pale and drawn, his eyes darting toward the shadows at the far end of the corridor.

"You shouldn't have come here," Elliot said, stepping aside to let him in.

Daniel entered quickly, shutting the door behind him. "I didn't have a choice," he said. "They know about you now. If you're going to survive this, you need to understand what you're up against."

Elliot frowned, crossing his arms. "You mean The Circle?"

Daniel nodded. "They've been watching you ever since you started asking questions. The alley, the book, Emily—they're all tied to the same thing. And the deeper you go, the harder it'll be to get out."

Elliot gestured toward the desk. "Then start talking. What is The Circle? What do they want?"

Daniel hesitated, his gaze flicking toward the books on the desk. He picked up the leather-bound book, running his fingers over its cracked cover. "This," he said, "is part of it. They call it The Codex. It's one of the oldest records they have—an instruction manual, a map, and a warning, all rolled into one."

"A warning?" Elliot asked, his brow furrowing.

Daniel nodded grimly. "The alley isn't just a door—it's a tether. It connects to something on the other side, something that shouldn't exist. The Circle's entire purpose is to keep it contained, to make sure it doesn't cross over. But there's a price."

"What kind of price?"

Daniel set the book down, his expression dark. "Sacrifice. The alley demands it. The whispers call to certain people, drawing them in. And once it chooses you, there's no escaping it."

Part 2: The Circle's History

As the morning light grew stronger, Daniel recounted what he knew about The Circle's origins.

"They've been around for centuries," he said, pacing the small apartment. "No one knows exactly how they started, but the Hale Foundation was one of their public fronts. They used it to fund their operations, to buy properties where the veil was thin—places like the alley."

Elliot listened intently, scribbling notes in his journal. "So they've been doing this for generations? Feeding people to the alley?"

"Not just people," Daniel said. "Stories, beliefs, energy. The alley isn't alive in the way we think of life, but it feeds on attention. The more people believe in it, fear it, the stronger it gets. That's why they let the urban legend spread. It's part of the ritual."

Elliot paused, his pen hovering over the page. "And what happens if they stop? If no one believes in it anymore?"

Daniel hesitated, his expression unreadable. "That's the thing. No one knows. Maybe it would disappear. Or maybe it would lash out, take what it wants by force."

Part 3: The Missing Piece

Elliot turned back to Emily's notebook, flipping through its chaotic pages. One drawing in particular caught his eye—a spiral with symbols radiating outward, like ripples in a pond. At the center was a single word: "Threshold."

"What does this mean?" Elliot asked, holding up the notebook.

Daniel studied the drawing, his brow furrowing. "The threshold is the point of no return," he said. "Once you cross it, you're no longer in control. The alley is."

Elliot's stomach twisted. "So Emily... she crossed it?"

Daniel nodded. "And now it's marked you too. That's why the whispers are getting louder."

Elliot clenched his fists. "There has to be a way to stop this. To close the door."

"There is," Daniel said reluctantly. "But it's not easy. And it comes with a cost."

Part 4: The Plan

Daniel outlined a plan—one that involved returning to the alley and performing a counter-ritual described in The Codex.

"It's risky," he said. "The Circle will try to stop us, and the alley won't make it easy either. But if we can cut off its connection to the other side, we might be able to close the door for good."

Elliot nodded, his jaw set. "When do we start?"

"Tonight," Daniel said. "If we wait any longer, it might be too late."

Part 5: The Circle Strikes Back

As the sun set, Elliot and Daniel prepared for their return to the alley. But just as they were about to leave, the power in Elliot's apartment cut out. The room plunged into darkness, the only light coming from the faint glow of the city outside.

The whispers returned, louder and more insistent than ever. Elliot grabbed his flashlight, sweeping the beam across the room.

A shadow moved.

"They're here," Daniel said, his voice low and urgent. "We have to go. Now."

They burst out of the apartment, racing down the hallway as footsteps echoed behind them. Elliot didn't dare look back. He could feel the weight of something chasing them, something that wasn't entirely human.

By the time they reached the car, Elliot's chest was heaving, his mind racing with adrenaline. As he sped toward the alley, he glanced at Daniel, who was staring out the window with a grim expression.

"This is only the beginning," Daniel said.

Elliot didn't respond. He gripped the steering wheel tighter, the whispers swirling in his mind like a storm.
