Chapter 18: Chapter 16: Seduction and Sin
The Reckoning.
Shade had heard that phrase before. Years ago. Back when the Vultures were still in power.
It was more than just a name.
It was a ritual.
And if they were bringing it back, that meant one thing:
They weren't just reclaiming their empire.
They were preparing for war.
But first, Shade needed to deal with Selene Vale.
She had answers.
And he was going to get them.
The Penthouse Encounter
Selene's penthouse was on the 50th floor of a luxury high-rise.
Breaking in was easy. Getting to her without setting off alarms? Not so much.
Shade bypassed the security systems, slipping into her private suite undetected. The place was sleek, modern, dripping with wealth.
Selene stood near the window, back to him, sipping a glass of wine.
"I was wondering when you'd show up," she said smoothly.
Shade didn't respond.
She turned, meeting his gaze. "You're angry."
Shade took a step forward. "You played me."
Selene smirked. "No, darling. I guided you."
Shade's patience was razor-thin. "Why did you tell me about the Vultures?"
Selene set down her glass. "Because you're the only one who can stop them."
Shade clenched his jaw. "Bullshit."
Selene stepped closer, her scent intoxicating. "The Vultures aren't just another gang, Shade. They're something bigger now."
Shade stared at her. "Who's running them?"
Selene's lips curled into a dangerous smile.
Then, instead of answering, she kissed him.
It was sudden. Sharp. A collision of power and heat.
And Shade, despite himself, let her.
For a second.
Then he grabbed her wrist, twisting it behind her back. "Try again."
Selene chuckled, not even flinching. "You're cute when you're rough."
Shade leaned in, his voice deadly. "Who. Runs. The Vultures?"
Selene exhaled, her smile fading.
Then she whispered the name.
"Lucian Black."
Shade stiffened.
That name.
He knew that name.
Lucian Black had been dead for five years.
Or so he thought.
Selene pulled away, watching his reaction. "Surprised?"
Shade's voice was cold. "If he's alive, why now?"
Selene met his gaze.
"Because, my dear Shade… he's been waiting for you."
