Chapter 45: Change the Weather

"Your report was late." Crow handed Yetta her coffee, kissing her on the cheek. "Rough night?"

"Got hit on at the bar." She shrugged. "Nobody we know. And then Jolyon stopped by, kinda threw me off for the night."

"What was he doing here?" He took a seat across from her, lacing his boots up. "Social visit?"

"Basically." She tugged her gloves on as they talked, working out the gaps between her fingers. "Hey…uhm- do you want to try that…" she trailed off, feeling very awkward suddenly. "That *thing* when we get home?"

"Be specific?" he asked. "What thing?"

Rip the bandaid off, she supposed. "Fucking."

Crow choked on his spit behind her. She could feel his eyes on her back, scrutinizing her. Waiting for some sort of punchline. "Are you *sure*?"

"I want to try it," she said. "This time without the alcohol. And the emotional drama. And the fighting afterwards." She could hear Crow, usually so quiet, come up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. He rested his chin on her shoulder, hugging her tightly. "So yes, I'm sure," she finally finished.

"If we're in the mood for it, we can," he permitted. "Just don't push yourself again, that's my only rule."

She peered through the sight on her bow, arrow slotted between her fingers. It was just a random patrol she was doing, Nessus was quite pretty this time of year. Carman was supposedly looking for her, probably in her usual hunting grounds of the EDZ. In Yetta's defense, she was aiming to memorize the entire area. If she could find a mostly secret hiding spot in the Dreaming City, she could there too.

A familiar tug yanked at her stomach, and she braced herself against the wall, setting her bow down. The world wasn't spinning, yet, thank the Traveler.

The vex could wait, she supposed. Hopping down off of her perch, she followed the tugging as it got stronger. She wanted to see this "traveling" portal up close, once more. She checked her connection with Jason, he was still tucked securely in her Light. Ammo was almost full, she wouldn't be going in completely unarmed.

The closer she got to the arch, the more the world around her spun. "Yetta!" She could hear Crow running after her, sounding like he was underwater.

"It's here," she said. "We can end this, once and for all."

For once, Yetta lands on her feet as she steps through the portal. Crow stumbles in behind her, grabbing her hand. With a blast of cold air, the portal behind them closes, going to another location. "There goes our way home," Crow lamented.

"We'll find it again," she said, shrugging. "How'd you find me, anyways?"

"Got really sick all of a sudden, figured the portal was being messed with again," he confessed. "I was right." He sighed softly, looking at the desolate land. "Europa, again?"

"Fits her, I'd say." Yetta huffed, stuffing her head back into her helmet. "Game time, I guess. This time, we're armed."

She set off across the wasteland, Crow following her. "We're in armor this time too," he pointed out. "No more freezing half to death. So, who's hunting who?"

"I'm hunting Corrupted," Yetta hummed. "She didn't pull me here."

"No." The voice made them turn to the cliff, eyes widening. Corrupted stood above them, Lament in her hands. "The Dawning must be here already. How pleasant."

. . .

The word "pleasant" had dripped from her mouth with a sickly sweet tone, drenched in venom. Yetta, of course, had grabbed Crow's hand, and they both sprinted over the snow.

"Split up!" Yetta shouted as she let go, heading one way. Crow nodded, and went the other. Corrupted paused. Who would she go after? With a disgruntled noise, she turned the Lament off, heading towards Yetta. Crow would make a fine encore.

"Yetta!" she shouted. The hunter didn't slow down, jumping in midair to get some more space between the two.

"So much for hunting her this time," she breathlessly mumbled. Jason sent a pulse of comfort, staying hidden. Ducking behind a corner, Yetta risked a peek. Corrupted was gone, the oncoming blizzard covering their tracks quickly. "Shit."

"Shit's right."

Yetta flung around, throwing her fist at Crow's face. It connected with a loud smack, Crow groaning and holding his nose. Blood trickled in between his fingers. "Ok, I deserved that one," he mumbled. Glint tsked, patching him up.

"Sorry," she apologized. "Are-are you ok?"

"Nothing hurt but my pride." He rubbed his face, leaning on the wall next to her. "I did *try* to stay split up," he swore. "Ended up running in circles." The snow blew around them harder, and Yetta straightened up, looking for a door.

"We'll be safer inside. I hope."

The blizzard had kept up for days, not slowing down. On the plus side, Corrupted couldn't find them as easily. The downside is they were snowed in, the small building not offering any sort of warmth.

Yetta leaned into Crow's chest, his Solar keeping them both decently warm. His hands rubbed comforting circles into her arms. She sighed softly, twisting her knife in between her fingers. "I guess we're not going to try that after all," Crow joked, breaking the silence. The two had barely spoken, afraid that Corrupted was somewhere outside. Afraid she'd find them.

"Try what?" Yetta asked, looking up at him.

"What you offered. The uhm, the fucking." He smiled easily, kissing the top of her head. "Not really an ideal place, or warm enough."

She sat up, turning to look at him fully. She plunged her knife into the icy snow. "It'd warm us up," she suggested.

"True." He pulled her back into him, humming softly.

"We kissed in a crumbling building. Is boning here really so out of the park for us?" Taking a deep breath, she placed a kiss under his jaw, feeling the muscles there tick, feeling him swallow.

"Are you offering?"

"Are you willing?" She blinked up at him, golden eyes glowing in the faint light.
