Romantic Troubles of Duanmu-kun

Episode 22.5 - Afterword and Preview

Afterword & Preview

Author’s Notes:

“Useless” annotations:

Episode 5’s title is a reference to “Cold Fish,” a film directed by Japanese director Sion Sono.

Episode 11’s title references the mystery novel “Dondonbashi, Ochita” aka The Mystery Master’s Nightmare by Japanese mystery writer Yukito Ayatsuji… (ah, that’s quite a tongue twister).

Episode 19’s title shares its name with Japanese horror/mystery writer Yumeaki Hirayama’s short story collection “Other People’s Affairs.” Actually, there’s no real connection, and the same goes for the first two references. I just used them because they came to mind…

“Salome” refers to the biblical figure who, driven by love turned to hate, used her beauty to bewitch King Herod and caused him to kill Saint John. Like Medea from Greek mythology and drama, some consider her one of the earliest classic examples of a “yandere” character. Of course, this is just connecting it to ACG consumerist otaku-pandering works, a simplified label-based interpretation.

The book Dr. Shirakawa (the brainwashing guy) reads is “Walden Two” by Professor B.F. Skinner, one of the greatest psychologists of the 20th century and founder of operant conditioning theory. Interestingly, it’s actually a sci-fi novel describing a utopian society…

The reason for making the protagonist a novelist was that it occasionally allowed for meta-narrative flourishes like at the end of episode 11…

There are many foreshadowing elements that connect throughout this volume, but since nobody commented on them, I’m unsure whether to explain them in detail. I’ll leave them unaddressed here.

As always, I don’t like asking for votes and favorites at the end of chapters because I feel it disrupts the reading experience, so I can only ask for your support here. It would be wonderful if people could consistently vote for this book every day! Please continue following! Also, I hope for more thoughtful comments, whether through danmu or in the comment section. Writing in isolation really dampens one’s creative enthusiasm…

What follows is a preview of the next volume.

— As it turned out, three weeks after the start of term at Yuihara High School, Amazu Manor received a new resident.

“Liang-kun, if both someone’s fiancée (virgin) and someone’s wife (virgin) fell into the water at the same time, which one would you choose to save?”

“I don’t care either way!”

“So that means you like me, right?”

As you can see, the true nature of this self-absorbed woman was revealed at a birthday party held at a classmate’s mansion.

By the way, that night, Miyagi-san predictably crashed the party, boldly declaring, “I smell a pervert among this bunch!”

…Well, looks like it’s starting again, isn’t it?

Unlike “X years ago,” this time it’s a fresh murder case (tentative)!
