Revenge on my Mafia Lover

Chapter 10: Time

I slammed the heavy oak door of my study behind me, my knuckles white with fury. The latest report from the search teams had just come in, and it was as empty as the silence in my mind.

The numbers, the maps, every detail pointed to the same thing, Selena was no where to be found.

My carefully laid out plans for revenge, years in the making, had been cut short by that infuriating brat. The audacity of her escape gnawed at me with a relentless hunger.

I could hear the trembe in Klaus's voice as he reported back, "Boss, we've combed through every inch of the forest, but there's no sign of her. It's been over six hours now." He paused, "We'll continue the search again, sir. We're not giving up."

I leaned against my marble desk, my eyes narrowing as I recalled every moment of that disgraceful escape. "Six hours?" I barked angrily. "Six long hours that she's been out there, slipping further away with every passing second. If she's not found by now, I seriously doubt a second search will turn up anything."

Klaus's eyes flickered but he held his ground. "Sir, with all due respect, Selena's not someone you'd expect to find easily, especially not after she's wounded. She's clever. We just need more time."

Time. A concept that had been ruthlessly squandered in those six hours. I stepped away from the desk and paced the length of the study. I had planned this revenge for years, a calculated response to the sins of her family. All of that, reduced to nothing by her escape.

I stopped in front of a large window overlooking the forest that bordered my estate. The trees, mere silhouettes against the night sky, mocked me with their silence.

"Selena," I muttered bitterly, "you thought you could outsmart me, outmaneuver me with your feisty little tricks. That butter knife incident, I should have known you were no pushover."

I could still see the glint in her eyes that night, the defiance that hovered in it. It should have been a warning, a clear sign that she was not to be underestimated.

I turned back to face Klaus, "Klaus, I'm ordering you and everyone else to comb through the entire forest again. I want every inch, every shadow searched until that brat is caught." I paused, the weight of my command hanging in the air.

Klaus bowed his head slightly, before replying, "Yes, sir. I'll mobilize the teams immediately. We won't rest until we find her."

His words did little to temper the storm inside me. I felt a pang of regret for ever underestimating her, a miscalculation that now threatened to undo all the control I had so carefully maintained. I recalled the moment she had dared to try to kill me with that tiny butter knife, again.

In that moment, I should have known that she was not merely a child, but a force to be reckoned with.

Yet, blinded by my own arrogance, I had dismissed her as little and weak. I had allowed my pride to make a fatal error, and now every plan I had for revenge was slipping through my fingers like sand.

I ran my hand through my hair, the strands catching the light as I stared into the distance. "You think she's clever, don't you, Klaus?" I asked quietly, more to myself than to him. "I have spent years honing every detail of this revenge, plotting, waiting, planning, and in mere days, that brat has managed to not only escape but embarrass me on every level. It's unforgivable."

Klaus's voice was low, measured. "Sir, if I may speak frankly, Selena may be young, but she's resourceful. We know she's injured, yes, but that doesn't mean she won't find a way to hide. Perhaps she's using the forest to her advantage."

I scoffed at the suggestion, pacing again as my mind raced through every possible scenario.

"Resourceful or not, she will not evade me forever. I swear on everything I hold dear that I will find her, no matter how long it takes."

"And when I do, she will pay for the sins of her family. I will make sure she understands the full extent of my displeasure."

I stopped pacing and turned to face Klaus directly, my eyes burning with anger. "If she's out there, I want her. No delays, no mistakes. And if any of these men show me even a hint of incompetence again, I'll have them fired on the spot."

The silence was a thick and heavy one, before Klaus finally replied, "Understood, sir. I'll see to it personally that our efforts are doubled. I'm confident that we will catch her soon."

I nodded and resumed my pacing, my mind drifting back to that fateful encounter again. I couldn't forget the image of Selena's wild eyes. That was a look that should have been a warning sign.

Klaus bowed his head and quickly exited to relay my orders. I was left alone with my thoughts, the silence punctuated by the ticking of a large, clock on the wall, a constant reminder that time was slipping away, just as my plans were.

"I underestimated you, Selena," I whispered, my voice seething with rage.

I sank into the deep leather chair, closing my eyes for a brief moment as I attempted to regain some kind of control.

"Selena…" I muttered under my breath, the name a curse and a promise. "I will find you. And when I do, you will pay dearly."

I had allowed myself to be deceived by appearances, and now the price of that, was the slipping away of my carefully engineered plan. But there was no room for self-pity.

I had to reclaim my power, no matter the cost.

As the night deepened, I could almost hear the frantic shouts of my men as they combed through the forest, their voices rising and falling with the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of nocturnal creatures.

In my mind, I envisioned the dark woods, every root and gnarled branch serving as a silent accomplice to Selena's flight. And in that darkness, I could sense her, elusive, defiant, and wild.

I took a final, long look out the window at the forest's edge.

"You can run, Selena," I murmured to the night, as if daring her to hide.

"But I promise you this: I will find you. And when I do, you will regret the day you ever dared to run from me."

I will hunt her down, until every debt is repaid. Her escape can not be the end as it is merely the beginning of her reckoning.
