Chapter 9: The System's Game
Tatsumi walked through the forest, replaying the earlier skirmish in his mind, analysing his performance. Suddenly, a familiar chime echoed in his mind.
"Congratulations to the host for defeating the Uchiha trio! Achieved your first victory in the ninja world! Special reward: 1500 ninja points."
Tatsumi's eyes gleamed. Points! He could practically see the numbers ticking upwards. Those are stepping stones to success… and maybe even a cute girl or two. A wide, mischievous grin spread across his face.
Those poor, foolish clansmen...
He turned, a sudden urge to return and "educate" the Uchiha trio further bubbling within him. More points!
Just as he was about to head back, the system's voice cut through his thoughts, a cold splash of reality.
"System limitation: The same individual can only yield points once within a short timeframe."
"Damn it!" Tatsumi exclaimed. "So, no more points if I go back now?"
"Affirmative."
"You… you despicable system!" Tatsumi muttered, his enthusiasm deflating like a punctured balloon. "Always thwarting my plans."
He paused, a flicker of cunning returning to his eyes. "System, what exactly constitutes 'short term'? A day? Two days?" He still harbored the hope of squeezing every last point out of those three.
"The timeframe is relative. Points can be earned again when the opponent's strength increases."
"So, if they remain weak forever, I'm stuck?"
"Correct."
"System suggestion: The host can target other children."
"…"
Tatsumi stared blankly. "You're trying to turn me into a delinquent!" Who designed this system? What kind of twisted sense of humor do they have?
The realization dawned on him. To amass points, he'd have to… sacrifice his conscience and follow the system's… suggestions. "If I'm going to be resented, I'm blaming this system," he grumbled.
Resigned to his fate, Tatsumi continued deeper into the forest, where he began his solitary training. Simple exercises, like push-ups and wooden dummy kicks, formed the foundation of his routine. He mimicked the training regimens he'd seen in the original Naruto timeline, particularly those of Rock Lee.
"One thousand push-ups… five hundred kicks…" he muttered, pushing himself to his limits.
"Congratulations to the host for completing 900 push-ups! Reward: 7 ninja points."
"Congratulations to the host for completing 500 kicks! Reward: 4 ninja points."
Hours passed. Tatsumi's clothes were soaked with sweat.
Current ninja points: 4410.
He paused for a meagre lunch break. He pulled out his pre-prepared meal—a rather unappetizing concoction. He took a large bite. "Ugh, this is awful," he mumbled. His culinary skills were… lacking. He could manage some Chinese dishes, but the scarcity of ingredients in the ninja world, coupled with his inability to master Japanese cuisine, had left him with a diet of blandness.
How have I survived on salt and water all these years? he wondered. More like licking than eating. He sighed. I need a wife. He quickly banished the thought. Stop it, you lonely single dog.
During his break, Tatsumi reviewed his status panel. 4410 points. His Taijutsu was Level 3. Advancing it to Level 4 would cost 2000 points. He aimed for Level 8 by graduation, but with the system's… encouragement to "target other children," accumulating points shouldn't be a problem.
With the pressure of point accumulation lessened, he could focus on other areas. He wanted to dominate the Academy, and that meant being well-rounded. He knew future rivals like Naruto and the rapidly improving Minato would be threats. He couldn't afford any weaknesses.
His current Taijutsu level was enough to bully the younger students, but relying solely on it was a liability. Taijutsu specialists were often at a disadvantage against ninjutsu and genjutsu users. While Might Guy had shattered that paradigm, he was a near-legendary exception, and his power came at the cost of the Eight Gates.
Tatsumi leaned against a thick oak, the rough bark digging slightly into his back. He closed his eyes, replaying the fight against Ryo and his cronies. Amateur hour, he thought with a grimace. That clumsy brawl… it was beneath me. He'd won, yes, but the messy, close-quarters struggle left a sour taste in his mouth. He'd had to get his hands dirty, so to speak.
If only my shurikenjutsu was sharper, he mused, picturing young Itachi training while a hidden Sasuke watched. Like Itachi's…
The image of Itachi's effortless precision. That's the kind of power I crave, he thought. Elegant… efficient… decisive. He wouldn't have to get within striking distance, wouldn't have to risk a stray blow. He could simply orchestrate an enemy's defeat from afar.
A sigh escaped his lips. And genjutsu… He remembered the smug looks on Ryo's and the others' faces before the fight. How satisfying it would have been to trap them in an illusion, to toy with their senses, to break their spirits with a whisper, a glance, a single, perfectly crafted genjutsu. His thoughts shifted to Shisui, another name that echoed with power. The strongest genjutsu user… Tatsumi felt a surge of ambition. I'm an Uchiha too. Genjutsu is in my blood. He knew he had the potential. He just needed to unlock it.
He opened his eyes, a flicker of determination in their depths. Shurikenjutsu and genjutsu. Uchiha specialties. It makes sense, he reasoned. It's what I'm supposed to excel at. Even without the Sharingan, he could achieve mastery, with enough training… enough points… He envisioned himself standing at the pinnacle of the Academy.
Too bad I don't have a sensei, he thought. He could have used some guidance, someone to show him the ropes. Still, he had his father's scrolls. Kagami's legacy. A little self-study and a generous helping of system assistance, and he'd make it to the top… He smiled, a glint in his eyes. With the right allocation of points, I can become a force to be reckoned with.
Tatsumi spent 1000 points, raising his shurikenjutsu to Level 3. He then invested 1600 points in genjutsu, also bringing it to Level 3. Finally, he allocated 600 points to ninjutsu, raising it to Level 2.
Ninjutsu would be crucial in the future, he knew.
