Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Xiao Wu Strikes!
The forest had grown hushed, as if the trees themselves were holding their breath.
In a clearing dappled by light, Qian Yu stood with his back to a dying breeze, the faint shimmer of spirit rings slowly fading around him. His amber eyes, momentarily dulled from exertion, regained their vivid hue as clarity returned to his mind.
He had succeeded—another soul ring obtained, another step forward on a path that was far from gentle.
Among his arsenal now we're ten spirit abilities, each more refined than the last. The first ability granted by the Void Wings allowed him flight, but Qian Yu chose not to rise into the sky. The trees here grew thick and wild, forming a tangled canopy that punished arrogance and rewarded caution.
And besides, he had no desire to draw attention.
Instead, he walked. Step by deliberate step, he made his way through the verdant silence. Halfway out of the forest, something caught his eye—a faint ring of charred earth and the familiar coils of a slain serpent.
It was the Mandrake Snake he'd fought earlier, its cold corpse curled lifeless near a long-dead campfire. He knelt beside it, noting with a glance that the soul ring had already vanished.
"So someone cleaned up after me, huh?" he murmured, tone placid. "Well, it's just a century-old beast. Let them have it."
He rose, brushed the dirt from his hands, and continued toward the edge of the forest.
The carriage swayed gently as it rolled toward Nuoding City, the sun casting long shadows across the road behind him. By the time Qian Yu returned to Nuoding Academy, dusk had begun its quiet descent. The dormitory was empty, unusually so, and the absence of familiar energy gnawed subtly at him.
Where had Xiao Wu and the others gone?
He wandered outside and crossed the training field, footsteps quiet against the flagstones. Just then, from the direction of the academic hall, a few older students strolled past, voices low but not low enough.
"…those working students have a death wish, challenging Senior Xiao Chenyu? Tomorrow's class might just have fewer faces in the crowd."
Qian Yu's eyes narrowed. He tuned in more closely.
"Well, it's not totally without cause. Rumor has it there's a new girl among the working students. First-year. Feisty little thing, they all call her 'Sister Xiao Wu.' Word is, she started it."
Another chuckled. "Please. A little girl like that? Against someone like Senior Xiao Chenyu? He's one of the few in sixth year who's already a full-fledged soul master. She'll get crushed. But hey, he might end up with a new set of followers afterward."
The third voice chimed in, "Don't forget Tang San. He's that master's disciple—supposedly real powerful too. Xiao Chenyu's smart enough to play nice with him. And Tang San's backing Xiao Chenyu this time."
Qian Yu stopped in his tracks.
Tang San?
Those changed things.
He knew Xiao Wu. Knew her strength, her boldness, her heart. Against this "Senior Xiao Chenyu," she'd probably mop the floor with him. But if Tang San got involved…
Qian Yu didn't hesitate. He took off running.
The so-called "back mountain" wasn't technically on academy grounds—it lay just beyond the rear gate, a gentle hill blanketed in trees. As he reached its base, the tension in the air was almost tangible, like lightning building before a storm. No birds sang. No insects stirred.
At the crest of the hill, the confrontation was already underway.
The working students stood shoulder-to-shoulder behind Xiao Wu, their collective presence more solidarity than skill. Across from them loomed a gang of older students—over twenty strong—clad in the academy's formal uniforms, their expressions ranging from smug amusement to open disdain.
At their head stood a tall boy, broad-shouldered, with a face that still bore traces of youthful roundness but had begun to harden with pride and power. His name was Xiao Chenyu—the self-declared tyrant of the sixth year. Handsome, perhaps, but the contempt curling his lips robbed him of any real charm.
"You can still back out, little girl," he said, his tone lazy and mocking. "Of course, I wouldn't mind keeping a cute rabbit like you as a pet."
Xiao Wu didn't flinch. Her pink cheeks flushed, but not from embarrassment—from irritation. She pointed a delicate finger at him and grinned impishly. "Afraid already? Tell you what—if you lose, you can be my little follower."
"Pfft. That's rich," Xiao Chenyu scoffed. "Hey, Wang Sheng, are you guys out of your mind? You brought this brat to challenge me?"
Wang Sheng clenched his fists. "Sister Xiao Wu, let me go first."
She gave a small nod, all calm authority. "Alright. Show him."
Wang Sheng stepped forward, drawing upon his spirit—a tiger's fierce form enveloped him as he charged the boy named Liu Long.
Liu Long sneered. "Losers never learn. Come at me, then!"
In a blur, both boys clashed.
For a moment, they seemed evenly matched—but soon, Wang Sheng began to falter. Bruised and panting, he roared with determination, a final burst of fury driving him forward. With a mighty leap, he slammed a tiger claw into Liu Long's head, sending the boy airborne.
As Liu Long struggled to recover midair, Wang Sheng spun, his right leg arcing like a whip—the tiger's tail strike cracked against his opponent's back, hurling him to the ground with a dull, final thud.
Gasps rose from the gathered students.
Xiao Chenyu's expression darkened. With a flick of his hand, Liu Long was dragged away for treatment—nothing life-threatening, thankfully, just bruised pride and a bruised body.
"…Fine," Xiao Chenyu muttered. "You win the first round. Ling Feng, go."
The next fighter was small and wiry, with sharp features and a permanent sneer etched onto his face. He didn't look twelve, let alone strong.
Wang Sheng staggered back, battered. Xiao Wu stepped forward, her voice light, yet brimming with confidence. "Take a break, Wang Sheng. Now it's my turn."
Ling Feng laughed dryly. "Run along, girl. Or don't blame me when I make you cry."
Xiao Wu smirked. "Try me."
He lunged.
With a graceful spin, he launched himself skyward, arms spread, gliding toward her like a bird of prey. But Xiao Wu didn't move—not until the very last second.
Then, with a movement as smooth as silk, she slipped beneath his assault, her legs twisting upward—lithe, powerful, and deadly. Her thighs locked around his neck in midair, and with one fluid motion, she flipped him hard onto the earth.
Boom.
The ground shuddered from the impact.
She landed gently beside him, brushing invisible dust from her shoulder. "Is that all you've got?" she asked, looking straight at Xiao Chenyu. "Next."
Xiao Chenyu stared at her in disbelief.
One move.
She had taken down Ling Feng in one move.
"She's… strong," he muttered.
A voice replied quietly from beside him, so soft he almost missed it.
"She's very strong."
Xiao Chenyu turned, startled.
A young boy stood beside him. Small, quiet, eyes gleaming with calm intelligence. Tang San.
"Brother San!" Xiao Chenyu straightened reflexively, his arrogance shrinking beneath remembered fear.
Tang San offered no smile.
He simply watched Xiao Wu from afar, the wind teasing strands of his dark hair, his eyes unreadable.
Something was changing.
And Nuoding Academy was about to learn the name Xiao Wu.
