Reborn as Richard Castle in Criminal Minds

Chapter 257: Chapter 257: Strategy

However, now wasn't the best time to reveal all the information he had. So, facing Captain Montgomery's sincere request, Castle pretended to be excited and enthusiastically assured him, pounding his chest for emphasis.

After receiving Castle's firm response, Captain Montgomery turned to Beckett and said, "The intel Castle provided today is crucial. We can't rely solely on his sources. Once you leave, delegate your current tasks and take Esposito and Ryan to follow up on the leads Castle gave us. You know what to do. I'll report this to our superiors immediately."

Beckett nodded in agreement. Seeing that her superior had no further instructions, she called Castle to leave Montgomery's office with her.

Watching the two leave, Captain Montgomery sighed, reflecting on the turbulent times. He then organized his thoughts and called the NYPD commissioner to report the critical information he had received from Castle.

Montgomery decided to inform the commissioner because the commissioner was aware of Castle's presence in their precinct. It was the commissioner who arranged Castle's partnership with Beckett, especially after Castle's new novel, based on Beckett, topped the New York bestseller list. The commissioner had even called Montgomery recently to support Castle's research at the precinct. Knowing that the commissioner would take Castle's information seriously gave Montgomery confidence that the robbers couldn't cause much trouble in Manhattan.

Meanwhile, as Beckett left the office with Castle, she quickly pulled him into a nearby break room, closing the door behind them. She looked at him seriously and asked, "I know you haven't told us everything you know. What are you hiding?"

Castle was used to Beckett's sharp intuition. He grinned, trying to appear sincere. "You're overthinking. It's already fortunate I got this much information. Do you think I'd hide something from you? I could have kept this to myself, you know."

Beckett scoffed at his explanation. "Don't think I don't know you're a chaos-loving troublemaker. I'm sure you're holding back something. I'm warning you, don't play with fire!"

Castle responded seriously, "I'm not playing with fire. I'm on your side; I don't want to see panic and casualties in Manhattan. I'm not hiding anything; I just don't have more information yet. I'll keep pushing my sources to find out more about this gang. Trust me, now that we know their plan, it won't be easy for them to pull it off."

Castle tried his best to sound sincere, hoping to convince Beckett. Surprisingly, she seemed to accept his explanation. She nodded, "Alright, I believe you. I'm taking Esposito and Ryan to follow up on some leads. Want to come with us?"

Castle shook his head. "No, I'll try to get more info from my friend who told me about this. You be careful, and keep me posted if you find anything. Don't try to be a hero on your own, okay?"

Relieved that Beckett had let him off the hook, Castle quickly left the precinct. Little did he know that Montgomery called Beckett back into his office as soon as Castle was out of sight.

"Beckett, what do you think of Castle's intel today?" Montgomery had just finished speaking with the commissioner and wanted Beckett's input.

Beckett hesitated, then said, "Sir, I think Castle is holding back. I'm almost certain he knows more than he's telling us, but I don't understand why he wouldn't share everything if he has it."

Montgomery smiled, explaining, "Castle likely wants to see the excitement unfold. Think about it. If he told us everything, we'd stop these robbers before they even started. But knowing Castle, he wouldn't miss a chance to see some action. If we had all the information, the NYPD would catch the robbers before they could execute their plan, and that wouldn't be as exciting for Castle."

Beckett was stunned. "Sir, are you saying Castle knows the robbers' identities but is deliberately withholding information? What's his game?"

Montgomery, seeing Beckett's confusion, continued, "Castle wants you to shine in this situation. According to him, the robbers will plant a bomb to distract the police while they rob the bank. Castle could have gone directly to the commissioner, especially since John McClane is involved. But he chose to tell us, so we're prepared and can react quickly when it happens."

Beckett, still baffled by the political implications, murmured, "I can't believe he thought this far ahead..."

Montgomery used a mentoring tone, "Beckett, you need to start thinking beyond just solving cases. You can't be on the front lines forever. My position will be yours one day, and Castle is already planning for that. If you find and defuse that bomb, the commissioner won't ignore it. With Castle's support, it's a chance for you to stand out."

Montgomery continued, "You need to start learning how to lead and not just focus on the cases. Castle sees your potential and is trying to help you rise. Don't let his effort go to waste."
