Chapter 62: Tyranny part 2
Lightning slashed through the void like vengeful serpents, arcs of pure energy leaping from Parademon to Parademon. The bolts wove through the air, linking their forms with threads of electricity that seared their bodies in an instant. Each Parademon's skin blackened, crisping into charcoal as its chest was torn open, a gaping wound where its heart had once been. The crackling lightning danced across the battlefield, an unholy symphony of destruction that reverberated through the emptiness of space.
"RUMBLE!"
The final arcs of lightning thrashed madly, a tempest of energy spiraling through the void before it collided with the massive ships hovering nearby. The energy rippled across their hulls, sending shockwaves through the metal as the bolts dissipated with a satisfying crack. Large spiderweb cracks formed along the surface of the ships, the damage spreading like a curse upon their once-imposing frames.
William's lips curled upward in a grin, his eyes glowing beneath the storm.
"Good for weaklings en masse, but for the big boys, I guess I'll stick with the cannon. Because bitches love cannons!"
He floated at the center of the dissipating storm, the thick clouds parting around him to reveal the upper atmosphere, now littered with the charred remains of thousands of Parademons. Their lifeless bodies drifted aimlessly, floating in the void as if caught in a celestial graveyard, a grim reminder of William's unrelenting power.
A lone Parademon flinched, its eyes narrowing as it instinctively felt the weight of William's gaze. For a brief moment, it seemed to hesitate, a flicker of doubt crossing its twisted mind. Was it even capable of fear?
"Can Parademons even feel fear?" William muttered, his voice casual, but the question hung heavy in the air, almost as if directed at the creature itself.
The Parademon stiffened, its trembling form barely able to contain the surge of terror running through it. In a flash, it seemed to contemplate fleeing—but the momentary hesitation was swiftly replaced by a sudden, sharp jolt.
"SKREEEEE!"
The Parademons, once fearful, now erupted in unison with a guttural roar, their collective battle cry ringing across the battlefield as they charged toward William. Their eyes burned with bloodlust, each one eager to prove its worth in this final, desperate assault.
A few thousand of them remained, their programming forcing them into an all-or-nothing maneuver. They closed in, their jagged weapons—spiked lances, bladed claws, and cruel swords—pointed directly at William, a hundred thousand points of death converging upon him in an unstoppable wave.
"Squelch, Smash, Thud!"
The first of their weapons landed on William's form with a sickening thud, but he didn't flinch. His grin never faltered. He stood there, seemingly unaffected, as the Parademons' strikes were absorbed by the unyielding force of his body. His form glowed faintly under the assault, his skin turning into a shimmering tapestry of green and yellow veins, pulsing with energy.
Confusion swept through the remaining Parademons. They had expected to see him falter, to feel the force of their coordinated attack, but instead, he seemed completely undeterred.
"WNNNG!"
Then, the energy beneath his skin began to bubble and swirl, as if something immense was stirring inside him. His form shimmered, disappearing into a mass of willpower, all contained within a massive torrent of ki—a storm of power building to an explosive crescendo.
"Crack!"
A sound like thunder tore through the battlefield, the barrier of concentrated energy around William beginning to fracture. The Parademons froze, the ground beneath them trembling as the pressure built. The barrier had held for a moment, but now, the very fabric of the air felt like it was being pulled apart.
"Shatter!"
The moment the barrier gave way, the energies contained within exploded outward in a violent eruption, the shards of willpower mixing and clashing in a volatile, dangerous mix.
"RUMBLE!"
The void itself seemed to groan in agony under the sheer force of the energy surge, the pressure reverberating across the battlefield like a sonic boom. The Parademons scrambled in a panicked frenzy, their instincts urging them to flee as the very space around them seemed to twist and crack. But it was too late. The force of the ki was unstoppable.
And then—
"BOOOOOM!"
The maelstrom of energy erupted in every direction, a blinding flash that consumed everything in its path. The force of the explosion rippled outward, decimating the remaining Parademons in an instant. Their bodies were torn apart, incinerated by the raw, unbridled power that tore through the battlefield. The shockwave surged outward, disintegrating anything it touched and leaving nothing but the remnants of destruction in its wake.
The void fell silent once more. The battlefield, once filled with the screams and chaos of combat, was now eerily still. William floated among the aftermath, a lone figure amidst the shattered remnants of an army. The energy had dissipated, and the stars once again glimmered coldly in the distance, indifferent to the devastation below.
"That ought to do it," he thought with a satisfied smirk as he gazed at the graveyard, he created his glowing Super Saiyan eyes scanned the surface of the earth, and saw several large battleships fully deployed in several key areas but mostly focused on Metropolis.
William tore through the vacuum of space, his speed warping the very fabric around him. The stars seemed to bend and twist in his wake, as if reality itself was struggling to keep up with his impossible velocity. The ripples in space echoed briefly as he passed, leaving a trail of distortion behind him. He didn't bother to slow down, his eyes locked on his destination, a ship, massive and foreboding, now descending toward the earth. It had just touched down in Star City, the epicenter of devastation.
As he hurtled toward the ground, the once-bustling city below had become a hellscape. The streets were littered with debris, broken glass, and the broken bodies of the helpless. The people who had once thrived here now fell prey to an overwhelming force, and there was no hero to save them. Flash, the city's protector, was nowhere to be found, leaving the citizens vulnerable to the invasion that was sweeping the streets.
The Parademons were everywhere, black, armored, and terrifying, their alien forms moving with unsettling coordination as they poured from the ship, ready to exact their will upon the city. They tore through Star City with impunity, dragging people from their homes, throwing them into cages, and killing anyone who dared resist.
A man, no older than forty, stood in the middle of the chaos, his eyes wide with terror as he helplessly stared at the Parademon looming over him. The creature's grotesque face twisted into a grin as it held a bladed weapon to the back of the man's head, the jagged edge gleaming in the dim light.
"Please! Please don't…" The man's voice cracked, but it was too late.
With a brutal thrust, the Parademon drove the sharp end of its weapon into the back of the man's skull. The sickening "SQUELCH!" of bone and flesh giving way echoed through the streets as the man's body went limp, his life snuffed out in an instant.
"AHHHHH, DAD, NOOOO!!!!"
A woman, no older than thirty, stood nearby, her face contorted in a mixture of shock and horror. Her shoulder-length brunette hair clung to her tear-streaked face as she fell to her knees, her hands reaching out desperately to the man she had just lost. Her heart-wrenching scream carried across the street, filling the air with an almost tangible despair. Snot and tears flowed freely from her face, her sobs the only sound that seemed to matter in the midst of the chaos.
Her cries, her anguish, did not go unnoticed. The Parademon turned toward her, its predatory gaze locking onto the woman. Its eyes, cold and empty, glinted with malice.
"RUMBLE!" The beast raised its weapon, aiming directly at the woman. Her blood ran cold as the pointed blade glinted in the dim light, and she froze, paralyzed by fear. The Parademon was intent on ending her life, just as it had done to her father. The air seemed to hum with danger, the seconds dragging on like hours.
But then, without warning, there was a sudden shift in the atmosphere. A pressure so immense that the Parademon faltered, its focus momentarily broken. A gust of wind surged through the street, whipping dust and debris into the air. The ground trembled beneath them.
The woman's eyes widened as she looked up, a barely discernible flash of green streaking through the darkened sky. A familiar, terrifying presence was descending, like a storm coming to swallow the city whole.
The Parademon turned in midair, its wings flapping as it raised its weapon again, ready for the next kill, but this time, it wasn't alone.
William descended from the sky, his form crashing into the earth with the force of a thunderstrike. He landed with a "BOOM!", shaking the ground beneath him as he rose from the crater of his own making. His eyes, glowing with dark power, locked onto the Parademon in an instant. The Parademon froze, its weapon faltering as it sensed the overwhelming power emanating from William.
His energy was palpable, a seething storm of destruction ready to tear through the invaders.
The Parademon hesitated for the briefest of moments, its glowing red eyes narrowing in what might have been confusion or perhaps fear. But that hesitation was all William needed.
"SHRKK!"
A wet, sickening slice echoed through the ruined street as the creature's head was casually severed from its grotesque shoulders. For a moment, its body remained upright, twitching as if refusing to acknowledge death before finally collapsing in a heap, dark ichor pooling beneath it.
Nearby, a young woman, her face pale with terror, gasped sharply. Her knees buckled, and the strength drained from her body as reality set in, she had just witnessed a monster kill her dad before being effortlessly beheaded. A soft whimper escaped her lips before she crumpled to the ground in a dead faint.
William exhaled through his nose, his gaze shifting downward. A man lay sprawled just a few feet away, his lifeless eyes staring blankly at the night sky, frozen in the agony of his final moments. Blood still seeped from his wounds, painting the cracked pavement beneath him. William clenched his jaw, his expression unreadable. Slowly, he bowed his head.
"I'm sorry for not making it in time." His voice was low, almost drowned out by the distant sounds of battle, explosions, screams, the mechanical roars of Apokoliptian war machines.
He turned to the unconscious woman, her frail form curled slightly, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths. Strands of hair clung to her sweat-dampened face, and her delicate fingers trembled even in unconsciousness.
"I should at least carry her to safety."
He stepped forward, reaching down with careful hands, but then he heard it.
A deep, earth-rattling crunch.
The sound of something massive, armored, and undeniably hostile.
William's fingers curled into a fist, his entire body tensing as the air around him thickened with the weight of an approaching presence. The streetlights flickered, casting distorted shadows over the destruction around him. He straightened, his gaze sharpening as another heavy footstep sent a tremor through the ground.
The Parademons were nothing compared to what was coming.
Slowly, William turned, his muscles coiling like a predator ready to strike. His eyes burned with anticipation.
The battle wasn't over yet.
A heavy presence loomed over the battlefield, thick with the scent of ozone and smoldering stone. From the jagged edge of the crater, a towering figure emerged, wreathed in dark, mystical Apokoliptian plate armor that pulsed with infernal energy. His imposing frame was outlined against the burning wreckage beyond, his silhouette monstrous under the blood-red sky.
His horned helmet gleamed menacingly in the dim light as his glowing crimson eyes locked onto William. A cruel smirk twisted his lips as he hefted an enormous electrified axe onto his shoulder, arcs of crackling energy licking across the weapon's deadly edge.
"I, Steppenwolf, claim your life in the name of Darkseid!" His voice boomed, resonating through the crater like the tolling of a war drum. His expression darkened, his eyes flaring with a malevolent glow as he tilted his head, almost mockingly. "Feel honored, for it is the last good thing you shall ever know!"
With a monstrous roar, Steppenwolf launched himself forward, the ground beneath him cracking from the sheer force of his movement. He moved like a juggernaut, his armor clanking with every thunderous step. His axe, wreathed in brilliant, snarling lightning, was raised high above his head. His charge carried terrifying momentum, his sheer size and speed a testament to the might of Apokolips.
William barely spared a glance behind him. The unconscious woman lay vulnerable amidst the debris, her delicate form completely at the mercy of whatever came next.
"If I dodge, she dies."
His gaze snapped back just as Steppenwolf's electrified axe came screaming down toward him, the air around it hissing with raw energy. There was no time for hesitation.
William's muscles tensed, his body hardening in an instant. He braced himself, feet digging into the fractured ground.
"BANG!"
The force of impact sent shockwaves rippling outward, shattering nearby rubble and throwing dust into the air. Sparks erupted as the axe bit into William's shoulder, carving a two-inch gash into his flesh before the momentum finally died.
"Drip. Drip."
Thick, crimson blood slid down his arm, steaming as it met the heat of the battlefield. His body trembled—not with pain, but with the raw, barely contained fury surging through his veins.
Through the veil of dust and electricity, William met Steppenwolf's glowing demonic gaze with an unyielding glare of his own. His emerald eyes blazed, flickering like fire as raw ki flared to life around him, pulsing with violent intensity.
A low, guttural growl rumbled from his throat, his voice laced with venom and promise.
"You're going to pay for that, bastard."
The very air around him trembled.
Steppenwolf had made a grave mistake.
