Chapter 308: The Death of Fang Jingfu
Outside Base S, after battling for five days and four nights, the zombie tide consisting of over a million zombies had gradually decreased to several hundred thousand, then to merely tens of thousands…
Li Haochu often took advantage of the nights when many special ability users went back to rest, organizing guard squad members to attack the zombies outside with mortars.
Attacking zombies with such weapons from atop the city walls was quite convenient, but the base’s ammunition reserves were not plentiful, and it would have been better if there had been a sufficient stock of ammunition.
During this period, Su Jin’s special ability had also advanced to Level Six in the Wood Element, and Lu Hao, after absorbing several Level Five Fire Element Crystal Cores, had also advanced to Level Five in the Fire Element.
Due to the relentless day and night battles, Lin Xiuyuan advanced to Level Four in the Ice Element; Lu Guanhai, Su Xiangzhe, Lin Tianzhen, Liao Yifan, and Xue Wanyi also advanced from Level Two to Level Three. Even Yin Chengtian and Shi Jin, who were originally Level One, had advanced to Level Two.
No one had expected that a zombie tide, which they were incredibly worried about, would actually become a catalyst for the team’s advancement.
...“Effort always pays off!”
Yin Chengtian said excitedly, as he could now conjure slightly thicker vines, which though still bearing rose flowers, were at least thorny.
As for Yin Chengtian’s unique vines, Su Jin did not know the reason; could it be because the seeds she initially stimulated for Yin Chengtian were rose seeds?
However, as long as the general direction was correct, that was good enough. Yin Chengtian did not dwell too much on it; he felt he had taken another step closer to combat using the Wood Element.…
That evening, after everyone had experienced a whole day of battle and was preparing to rest, an incredible number of zombies suddenly appeared inside the base!
The zombies had entered through the South Side Gate, and no one knew why the gate had been broken open by external zombies; Mao Qiqi was the first to notice the zombies that had entered the base.
Just when everyone thought that the base had been breached by zombies and was preparing to go support, Mao Qiqi said there was no need.
Because it seemed that those zombies had already been surrounded by people and were being slain at a very fast speed.
“They were quickly enclosed?” Lu Hao asked.
“Yes, and it seems there are quite a lot of people,” Mao Qiqi replied.
After hearing this, Lu Hao only pondered for a moment before guessing the reason.
“It seems that Liang Jiuhui’s side has finally decided to settle scores,” Lu Hao said with a smirk.
…
At the brightly lit South Side Gate, a group of roaring zombies were encircled with layers of earth walls by Earth Element Ability Users lurking in the shadows, and a 100-member guard squad swiftly exterminated them all.
Several sneaky individuals at the South Side Gate were also caught on the spot by Ye Rongxin.
Subsequently, the doorbell rang at Jia Kaiji’s house.
“It looks like it must be Huo Qi and the others.”
Jia Kaiji smiled and gestured for Jia Yue to open the door, not expecting the good news to come so quickly.
However, the visitors were not Huo Qi, but instead Liang Jiuhui and Li Haochu in full gear.
“Uncle Jia, why aren’t you sleeping at this late hour?”
Although Liang Jiuhui’s words sounded polite, there was not a hint of warmth in his tone.
“What are you doing here?!”
Jia Kaiji slowly stood up, his eyes full of disbelief.
Fang Jingfu covered her mouth as she stood at the staircase entrance; though Jia Kaiji and Jia Yue had not said much to her, during her days here, she had guessed a bit of it, and she was very hopeful that Jia Kaiji would succeed.
However, looking at the situation, it seemed her backer was about to fall.
Li Haochu looked at Jia Kaiji with a face full of fury, having long wanted to personally slaughter Jia Kaiji. If it had not been for Liang Jiuhui telling him it wasn’t yet time, he would have already confronted him with evidence to settle accounts.
Liang Jiuhui glanced at Jia Kaiji and the two women in the room, then smiled and said, “Of course, we are asking Uncle Jia to come to the scene to cooperate with the investigation. You are now suspected of many murder cases, you know.”
“You, you have no proof, don’t think you can frame me!”
Jia Kaiji had already guessed that the truth had been exposed, but Liang Jiuhui had no evidence. Even in the apocalypse, a base leader would still need evidence to arrest someone.
Liang Jiuhui, however, couldn’t be bothered to explain this and simply had Jia Kaiji and Jia Yue taken away.
As for Fang Jingfu, whether she was forgotten or not, no one came to arrest her.
This made her breathe a sigh of relief, but the look Jia Kaiji gave her as he turned his head was as if he wanted to devour her.
“Just a moment, let me grab a coat from the couch. I’m old and can’t withstand the cold. You can come with me; I assure you I’ll cooperate,”
Jia Kaiji said as he walked to the door.
Liang Jiuhui squinted his eyes, signaling that he could go. He was curious to see what this sudden change of attitude in Jia Kaiji was all about.
Jia Kaiji walked over to the couch and indeed picked up his coat. Then he quickly lunged towards Fang Jingfu, who was standing by the staircase!
No one present had expected him to attack a woman. By the time Li Haochu tried to intervene, Jia Kaiji had already grabbed Fang Jingfu by the neck!
Fang Jingfu was utterly confused. Why had Jia Kaiji suddenly come at her like this?
“You dared to betray me?!”
Jia Kaiji’s hands trembled with anger.
Liang Jiuhui had only arrested him and Yuer, but Fang Jingfu wasn’t taken. What did that imply? It could only mean that Fang Jingfu was Liang Jiuhui’s person! Or she had made some deal with Liang Jiuhui!
“Cough, cough, it’s not me, I, cough, haven’t…”
Fang Jingfu could no longer speak, seeming to see Jia Yue smiling at her from the doorway, a chill spreading down her spine.
Once Jia Kaiji set his mind on something, he would never change it. He had now confirmed that Fang Jingfu was the problem, and his regret morphed into a deep hatred. The hand he was using to strangle Fang Jingfu suddenly conjured a fireball, enveloping the screaming Fang Jingfu.
After dealing with Fang Jingfu, Jia Kaiji seemed to have aged ten years. He slumped to the ground, trembling and holding his head, mumbling something incomprehensible.
It wasn’t until his hands were bound and he was led to the base’s security team that he started laughing maniacally again.
“Liang Jiuhui, do you think catching me is the end? Hahaha,”
“Are you talking about my father’s side?”
The calmness displayed by Liang Jiuhui caused Jia Kaiji’s eyes to widen, wondering…
“Perfect timing. After taking you to Captain Ye, I was planning to go there and verify the results,”
Liang Jiuhui said with a smile.
“Impossible, how could you know!”
It was impossible for Fang Jingfu to know about this!
Jia Kaiji tried to leap towards Liang Jiuhui but was firmly pinned to the ground by Li Haochu, a strength-affiliated ability user behind him.
“Guess,”
Liang Jiuhui left those two words behind before leaving the place.
Leaving only Jia Kaiji still roaring behind him.
Liang Jiuhui felt that handing him over to Ye Rongxin, who had likely marked down numerous entries about Jia Kaiji in his little notebook, was the most relieving option.
But now, he still had to address the matter that had been troubling him all this time.
