Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse

Chapter 206: Follow the Car

It was not until all the zombies on the entire street had been cleared that the little girl stopped to rest, and instead, she continued to dig out Crystal Cores with the adults.

The Venus Flytrap seemed to have eaten too many zombies, and Su Jin could feel the fullness coming from Xiao Cui. She retracted Xiao Cui and placed the shrunken Venus Flytrap into her space. In the eyes of Ban Xiaobo and others, it appeared as if she was just retracting her Wood Element ability, with nobody suspecting she had a space ability.

“Find a drivable car as quickly as you can, we shouldn’t stay here long,” Lu Hao said.

They had to leave the area quickly. Unlike City West, even though they had eliminated all the zombies on the street, staying longer would undoubtedly attract more zombies.

“Yep, no problem at all, with me around, everywhere has a car that can be driven,”

Ban Xiaobo was quite confident in his skills. He found a business van with its doors ajar roadside, opened up its dashboard, then pulled out several colored wires. With a few touches between the wires, the vehicle started up.

The few following him were no longer surprised; along their journey, they had never lacked vehicles—it was all thanks to Ban Xiaobo’s scavenging roadside.

Seeing that the vehicle was ready, Ban Xiaobo picked up a knife and joined Lu Hao and the others in digging out Crystal Cores. The other four also started digging upon seeing this. Previously, they did not know the usage of the Crystal Cores and had left right after killing the zombies. After the function of the Crystal Cores was made public, they had regretted it for a long time, as those were essentially money!

“Do you guys have anywhere specific you need to go next?” Lu Hao asked.

“We’re looking for a refuge,” said Ban Xiaobo. They had come all the way here after hearing there was a refuge in Province A.

“Head for the safe haven instead, the refuge will be closed in a few days,” Lu Hao said as he plunged a Tang Sword into a zombie’s head.

“There’s a safe haven? Are you guys going there too?” The bearded man asked excitedly, the safe haven sounding much more reliable than a refuge.

“Yeah, you can follow our vehicle,” Lu Hao said.

The group was thrilled. They had been seeking a stable place to settle down. They thought the refuge might let them rest temporarily, but unexpectedly, there was also a safe haven they could go to, all thanks to Ban Xiaobo.

“Hey, sister-in-law, remember me?” Ban Xiaobo greeted Su Jin and her family members politely.

Su Jin introduced him to her family as well. When Su Xiangzhe heard that this armored vehicle was modified by him, he even complimented him a few times.

“But how did you end up in City S?” Su Jin curiously asked Ban Xiaobo.

Ban Xiaobo scratched the back of his head, somewhat embarrassedly said, “Well, I made some money selling you guys a few cars last time, so the store manager gave me a long vacation and I decided to travel…”

“Don’t listen to his nonsense, he’s actually out to meet an online friend,” the bearded man sold out Ban Xiaobo without hesitation…

Ban Xiaobo shot him a glance. This guy seemed determined to let everyone know about his embarrassing past, mocking himself whenever he met someone.

“Meeting an online friend?” Su Jin and the others laughed.

“Heh heh, I haven’t even met her yet. The apocalypse came before we could meet,” Ban Xiaobo recalled his embarrassing past. They had agreed to meet that night, but just as he was about to leave the hotel, the Apocalypse arrived…

So he never even got to see the face of the female netizen before the Apocalypse took over.

“But let me tell you guys, it’s a good thing I came out to meet an internet friend. I heard that City H has fallen and become a Dead City, with hardly any survivors left there,” Ban Xiaobo said. He had heard this from a fellow villager who had escaped from City H when he was previously in Province A, so he actually felt quite fortunate that he had escaped from there beforehand.

Hearing that City H had become a Dead City, everyone fell silent, for it was once their hometown.

“Let’s get out of here soon,” Lu Hao interrupted the conversation, as he had spotted a few staggering zombies approaching from the street corner.

The others saw them too and quickly got into their cars to leave the area.

“I can’t believe City H fell so quickly. I remember it was alright when we left,” Huang Yunxiang remarked.

“It’s quite normal. When we were there, no rescue measures were taken locally, and the people at home were out of the loop. A downfall was just a matter of time,” Su Jin analyzed.

Remembering the measures taken in City S and the transparency of information, the people in the car fell silent again; without comparison, there wouldn’t be any pain.

“What about Ban Xiaobo… Are they coming with us?” Su Jin asked. She was not worried about him as he was Lu Hao’s friend, but she was concerned about the others with Ban Xiaobo, given they were all strangers.

“He won’t come with us,” Lu Hao said with a smile, knowing Ban Xiaobo well enough to be confident he wouldn’t follow them.

Before the apocalypse, Ban Xiaobo had never tried to connect with Lu Hao once he knew he was the captain of the criminal police.

Once, when Ban Xiaobo had a fight with some street thugs and ended up in Lu Hao’s station, he never mentioned Lu Hao’s name to anyone, which was why Lu Hao felt secure buying cars from him.

Su Jin nodded, but when she saw the increasing number of zombies on the street outside, she frowned again.

The bearded man driving behind, Gao Lei, kept a serious watch on the road conditions. He was a professional racing driver before the apocalypse, and luckily, his skilled driving had helped him evade the early-stage zombies.

The armored vehicle in front had rammed through many zombies, which had made it easier for their van following behind. The van’s crash durability was not very good, and the bumpy ride had already jumbled everyone inside it.

“Hey Gao Lei, can you not drive the van like it’s a race car? You think you’re drifting or what?” Ban Xiaobo’s young companion, Xu Chao, said. He was almost nauseated by the tossing, but he had nothing in his stomach to throw up.

“Cut it out, you can’t even drive and you’re questioning my skills. Hold on tight!” Gao Lei retorted and then steered the wheel sharply to dodge an approaching zombie on the right.

“Ugh…” Xu Chao finally couldn’t help but retch.

“Man, how many months has it been now?” Tian Liao teased him from beside.

The people in the car all laughed.

Ban Xiaobo enjoyed being with these people. Gao Lei was his friend even before the apocalypse, and the others were Gao Lei’s friends. They had all become close companions along the way, although they had also lost a couple of friends along the road…

“Ban, who are these incredible people with your brother?” Tian Liao couldn’t help but ask.

“The most beautiful one is my brother’s wife, the others, I guess they’re his family,” Ban Xiaobo answered.

“Oh yeah, that beautiful Wood Element girl, she’s amazing. To think she can even control plants to consume zombies,” Xu Chao said, deciding he would never underestimate the Wood Element ability again.
