Chapter 2: A Bed of Leaves
Time: 14:00
Zack sat on the river's bay while looking into the guide book. He had gotten really angry and irritated at the guide book for not telling him how to process wood into planks, but questioning it he had gotten a reply that only made him even more pissed.
The Book's reply was + You never asked +
Zack was currently thoroughly going through and understanding every basic item he will have to get. While he was doing that he was also munching on strawberries as he did not have any other food for now.
" So to summarise, I need to make a firestarter with 2 sticks and using that i need to start a fire. To start a fire i need to throw 2 Logs, 2 sticks and 4 thatch on the ground and light it with the firestarter. And to get thatch i just need to cut some grass with a knife. "
+ Yes, Firepits are used for making torches, cooking food, heating up low-tier items for smithing, and cooking sand to make glass. They are also a great way to keep the predators away at night. +
" Ok, Yes Torches i need that. I probably only have 3-4 hours of daylight left. But it should be fine since there are no zombies or Skeletons above ground right? " Zack asks with trepidation. He did not want to spend the night out in the open without a roof on his head, but he did not have a choice.
To make even the most basics of a house made of just sticks, thatch and mud he had to make planks and that was looking even harder now then before.
" To make planks i need to put 4 lumber together and for that i need a saw. And to make a saw...sigh i need copper. " He sighed looking at the photo of the Green Ore on the guide book.
+ Yes, And to process Native Copper or Malachite you need to fill up a ceramic vessel with it and place it under 8 Thatch and 8 logs for 8 hours for it to melt. This technique is more commonly used to alloy different types of metal like bronze. The more efficient way to melt ore would be a charcoal forge. +
The picture in the book changed to video of a guy in a light blue shirt and dark blue pants placing pieces of stone brick blocks into the ground. They were placed in such a way to leave one block space in the middle, where the guy then placed 7 pieces of charcoal and then he light it on fire using the firestarter.
Zack watched the whole thing intensely. It did not phase him as he had watched a couple of similar tutorial videos by now. The only thing that still wierded him out a bit was that the guy was square.
But still his survival took precedence on other things for now.
Zack promised himself that as soon as he was in a comfortable and safe spot he will investigate the quest book thoroughly but for now.
" And how do i get charcoal? " Zack asks the book.
+ To make a charcoal pit you need to put stacks of logs in a pit, light it on fire and cover it up. The Charcoal pit needs to be covered on all sides to allow it to burn without access to air.
If any of the log piles are touching an air block, the whole structure will go up in flames.
You can make the pit as big as 64 Blocks wide, and it is more time efficient to do it this way as each batch needs 18 hours to make. +
"...So Charcoal is just wood right? Lots of wood sigh.." Zack said as he looks at the picture of a log pile in the ground turning into a charcoal pile in the book. He then started to get up and took out his axe.
" I will still need clay to make vessels and molds so i should just cut the trees while moving upstream on the river. " Zack mutters as he moves towards the tree nearest to the river bank. Just as he is about to start cutting it he stops and thinks of something while looking at the leaves.
Zack then had an idea. He quickly changes the axe in his hand to some dirt he had dug up and tries to build a block ladder up the tree.
But it did not work, As soon as he played the block 2 high up it tumbled down from a side to the ground.
Zack looks frustrated at the fallen dirt block. He then moves towards the tree while putting away the dirt while muttering." Stupid gravity, Stupid Idea..."
Zack decided to try that later either when he had support or some sort of plank block as he learnt that bricks or any type plank block can ignore gravity and do not need support.
He leaves 2-3 trees near the river bank and starts moving upstream all while chopping trees and looking for clay in the river.
Time: 17:30
The Sun had reached its last stretch for the day. Zack knew that he had to quickly find a place to sleep and start a fire.
He stood in the river near the shore. He had removed his shirt and pants and was only in his underwear but he did not care. As far as he knew nobody except for him was in the area.
As for what he was doing, he was shoveling into an area right beneath the shore. He had found some clay but it was hard to shovel while holding your breath and the current was not helping the work at all.
Finally collecting all the clay he could, he got out of the river. He quickly opened his inventory to start a fire as he was starting to get cold.
" I'll just spend the night here and go back tomorrow. Even though there's nothing in that area at least it's a better location with a mountain to the back, river to the front, Tree line to the left and now an open area to the right after the deforestation that i did. " Zack muttered as he observed all the logs in his inventory. He had cut so many trees that he had to make 2 more axes. Fortunately stone tools were easy to make.
He now had 128 logs and 40 clay balls in his inventory.
He took out his stone knife and hit some tall grass with it. The grass broke almost immediately dropping thatch bunches. He took those thatch and placed 4 pieces on the ground and added 2 log blocks and 2 sticks to it.
He thought that if he dropped something on the ground it would just fall but here game mechanics fooled him as the moment the item left his hand they became small again.
Zack crafted a firestarter with just 2 sticks placed diagonally and took them out. Holding them in his hand he could see the difference between these and just normal sticks.
" These are quite smooth and really thin compared to a normal stick that is uneven and bark covered." Zack observed the difference when a chilly air blows by making him shiver.
He quickly directs one end of the fire starter stick towards the pile on the ground and starts to hit it with the other one at an angle. After doing it a couple of times and not getting a result, he thought he was doing something wrong when suddenly a flame burst out forming a campfire looking block on the ground where the pile of items were.
Zack sighs seeing that he was not wrong and getting the fire just before sunset was a godsend to him. He quickly thinks ' Interface ' in his mind while looking at the fire.
A new interface appears in front of him. This interface had 2 slots for input in the middle and a single output source beneath it. There were also 4 empty fuel slots on its left with a gauge to tell the temperature on it.
Zack puts 4 oak logs in the fuel slot and starts to dry himself. He also takes out the guide book from his inventory.
Zack looks towards the oak logs burning rapidly in the fire and asks the guide." Hey how long does an oak log burn for? "
+ Oak logs burns for 20 minutes while producing a temperature of **Bright Red. +
Zack looks towards his logs reserves and decides to leave 32 logs for burning the fire but use the rest to make charcoal or make clay stuff.
But before even making the clay stuff he decided to not go in blind this time and look at the patterns in the book while drying himself.
Time: 18:00
" Let's see, hmm it's something like this and now it should be ok! " Zack looks towards the pit he had dug up to bury his logs.
He had decided to first make all the essentials he needed for a saw and an axe from clay then he would use the rest of the oak to make charcoal.
Tomorrow he will spend his whole day looking for metals and then he will cut all the trees from the left side of the base area.
Zack had already made the raw clay molds for 2 Ceramic Vessels and one Ceramic Jug. He had also made one saw mold and one axe head mold.
A chisel mold and the last one was 2 ingot molds.
Ingot molds were 5 clay balls to 2 molds so only because of this he had 5 clay left, which he used to make a cooking pot.
And this way was also efficient as the clay molds each cooked in batches of 4.
Zack quickly dug out 2 holes in the ground nearby and then placed 8 molds in them 4 each.
He was going to leave out one of the ingot molds for the later batch for now.
Then he put the thatch and the logs into his hotbar.
For the fireplace he just threw the stuff on the floor but here he had to actually place them.
To actually place any block or item on the ground he just had to have been holding it in his hand and think about placing it for the item to place.
He first placed 8 pieces of thatch in both pits to fully cover the molds then placed 8 logs on it.
Log itself was a funny block to place down. Whenever you place it down instead of it being a full block, it was 1/16 of one. It was like a log pile but just one corner with only one log. To make a full log pile he had to add 16 logs to a single block.
But here it was just 8 so it looked like a lot of square shaped logs stuffed into the ground. To light this on fire he could use the firestarter or there was an easier way.
Zack opened the campfire interface and added 20 of his remaining sticks into it and they all turned into torches real quick.
" How should i do this.. maybe just throw it from here? " Zack muttered as he took out the torches from the hotbar.
They were literally just cuboid sticks on fire.
He then chucked one from a little further away straight at the clay mold pit.
As the torch left his hand it it shrunk down to the size to a lit matchstick and landed straight on target lighting one of the pit and after a second spreading to both the pits on and lighting them on fire.
Looking at that working Zack does something similar for the charcoal pit. He fills in a 6×2 with log piles and covers them all up with dirt. He just leaves one corner open where he throws the torch and as soon as it light up he quickly placed a dirt on that too.
Looking at smoke particles coming out of the ground Zack mutters " Its so wierd, seeing smoke come out of a Fully closed ground. "
Time: 19:30
It had become completely dark now. Expert for the CampFire and 2 clay pits giving light all Zack saw was pitch black darkness. He had eaten all he could and drank all he could.
Now he just wanted to rest a bit as tomorrow he would have to travel alot to look for copper.
Zack had an idea for a comfortable and somewhat safe place to sleep but to pull it off he had to get atop of a tree.
Zack checked his inventory and placed the remaining logs into his hotbar.
He had noticed earlier that log piles were non gravity blocks, that means he could actually climb a tree by making a staircase.
And he did just that, Zack had just enough logs to reach the top of a tree.
Even though the leaves looked transparent, when Zack stepped on it, they were quite soft but solid enough. He looked around for any dangers but upon only seeing darkness even with the moonlight, he quickly gave up for now.
Zack takes out the remaining strawberries and lies down on the leaves.
" This will have to do for now but soon i want a comfy bed, some better food and ofcourse a proper base." Zack says as he gazes at the starts while eating his dinner.
Before he knew it he had fallen asleep...
But just before closing his eyes completely he was almost positive he saw some purple square eyes staring at him, as if looking at him like he was the most delicious food it had ever seen.
