Chapter 6: Chapter Six: Abyssal Core
Chapter Six: Abyssal Core
Being omniscient—capable of viewing everyone's secrets with a glance, uncovering information meant to remain hidden with a snap.
The all-knowing eye. Able to see through all disguises and deceptions. This was an absolute, innate ability, one that could help anyone immensely if used appropriately.
But Twilight was deeply troubled.
Although he was excited about the boundless prospects of his Omniscient God's Eye, the information it provided was as lethal as it was incredible.
All of Wilson's information screamed one thing: Deadly.
Wilson was a terrifying assassin feared by many for his ruthlessness. His power and infamous reputation weren't earned by idleness. Yet here he was, attending a mere awakening ceremony. There was no doubt about his intentions.
Out of everyone present at the ceremony, Twilight could think of only one person worthy enough to attract the attention of such a powerhouse, and that person was none other than himself.
No matter how one looked at it, the rarity of an SS-grade potential wasn't to be underestimated. However, the same could be said for the power of a city lord.
'If the city lord wishes to force me to become his underling… I might not be able to resist, especially with Wilson here,' Twilight thought with clenched fists.
Even so, he refused to give up. At the very least, he needed to awaken an SSS-grade potential, so the emperor himself would intervene, allowing him to successfully evade the city lord's evil clutches.
Alternatively, he would need to reach the end of the pond to attract the attention of humanity's higher powers.
Just as he prepared to speed-run through the awakening pond, the silent, cloaked figure spoke once more:
"Long time no see, Mr. Stone. How have you been recently?"
Although Wilson's voice was calm and soothing, Twilight could see the middle-aged administrator tremble slightly on the question of the cloaked individual.
"I-it's been good, especially with the Divine Sanctum sect's tournament coming up soon," Mr. Stone stammered, a stiff smile plastered on his face. Unable to hide his unease, he asked:
"Lord Wilson, to what do I owe the pleasure?"
"Haha, there's no need to make the atmosphere so awkward with unnecessary questions, Mr. Stone," Wilson chuckled darkly. Yet, no one in the entire area dared to laugh along.
From the moment this mysterious figure arrived, the entire gathering had grown silent. Everyone understood the unspoken law of their world: when a genius emerged, they lost the right to control their fate.
Right now, all eyes—including those of the slanderers—were fixed on Twilight, pity colouring their gazes. Everyone knew the saying: the nail that sticks out gets hammered down.
Although Twilight's potential was shocking, the youths watching knew his rights to his own life had been stripped away the moment he crossed the A-grade threshold.
Even the tyrannical city lord had set his sights on Twilight, and no one here believed he could survive. He would either submit… or die.
Mr. Stone sighed in regret, knowing full well his chance to become a grand official of the empire had slipped through his fingers like quicksand.
Twilight, however, had anticipated all of this long before the others. Yet, he refused to relent. As long as he remained in the awakening pond, no one could harm him without risking immediate annihilation by the hope key.
So for now, Twilight had all the time he needed to achieve his goal—and perhaps even more.
'City Lord, you've ruined all my plans this time. But this debt shall be repaid in the future,' he swore inwardly with steely determination.
Without further hesitation, he continued walking through the pond, covering ground at an even faster pace.
This greatly shocked the spectators. Some of the slanderers, who had almost been killed, felt a dark excitement at the sight.
The brighter Twilight's light shone, the more the city lord would desire him. In their eyes, Twilight was a fool for revealing even more of his potential.
They silently prayed he would reject the city lord's offer so he could be killed, thus satisfying their twisted envy.
Even Lucas, who had been silent all this time, shook his head. No one was optimistic about Twilight's future, now that an assassin under the city lord's command was here.
Meanwhile, Twilight couldn't care less about what others thought or said. He continued advancing rapidly within the pond.
In the blink of an eye, he had reached his seventy-ninth step. Almost instantaneously, he crossed the threshold to the eightieth step.
However, as soon as Twilight set foot on the eightieth step, a massive pressure descended upon him, halting his progress significantly.
Caught off guard by the sudden shift, Twilight nearly stumbled, though he quickly steadied himself. Examining the remaining distance ahead, he frowned.
'This… is not going to be easy.'
Twilight was no fool. He knew the only reason he had come this far was because the pond had refrained from pressuring him for whatever reasons—until now.
Initially, it had been effortless to breeze through the challenge with no resistance whatsoever.
But now that the pond's pressure was upon him, Twilight understood that progress would no longer come so easily.
He couldn't quite grasp the mechanism behind the awakening pond's actions, but he didn't care.
All that mattered was awakening his potential and stepping into the Astral Realm as soon as possible.
Nothing—not even the pressure of the awakening pond—could stop him. With that resolve, he resumed walking, albeit at a slower pace due to the mounting pressure.
Then, Twilight noticed something shocking. The Hope's Essence flowing from the pond was no longer green, but black. He was perplexed until the sovereign system's notification rang beside his ears:
[Due to your countless failed attempts to awaken a vital core, Hope's Key has conducted a thorough scan of your body.]
[It has detected that your dormant talents are incompatible with a vital core. Thus, it has adapted to meet your talents' needs.]
