Chapter 4: Ch.4: Preparations and a Long-Awaited Visit

- Mumbai, Maharashtra, India -
- June 9, 1991 -
The moment Arthav read the last word of the letter, he bolted out of his room, excitement bubbling over. He practically sprinted down the hall, letter clutched in his hands, and burst into the living room where his parents were seated.
His mother was sipping tea while reading a book, and his father was going over some documents, deep in thought. At the sudden intrusion, they both looked up, startled.
"Mum! Dad! It's here!" he exclaimed, waving the parchment in the air.
Emily blinked before realization dawned on her face. "Oh?" she said, setting her tea aside. "Your Hogwarts letter?"
"Yes! Look!" He hurried to them, thrusting the letter towards his mother.
His father, Rahul, chuckled at his son's enthusiasm while Emily took the parchment carefully and read through it. A warm smile tugged at her lips as she finished. "Well, looks like it's official," she said, handing the letter to Rahul, who skimmed through it as well.
"Congratulations, champ," his father said, ruffling his hair. "You're on your way to becoming a proper wizard now."
Arthav grinned widely.
Emily, however, felt a familiar worry settle in the back of her mind. She had known this moment would come, but now that it was here, she couldn't shake the unease growing in her chest. Hogwarts was her childhood home, but it wasn't perfect. The prejudice, the dangers, the way some pure-blood families looked down on people like her… and now, her son would be stepping into that world.
Still, she pushed aside her concerns and forced a smile.
For now, she would share in his excitement.
"Alright," she said, gently cupping his cheek. "We have a lot to prepare for. You'll need your books, robes, a cauldron… and most importantly, your first wand."
Arthav's eyes lit up at that.
"We'll need to exchange money at Gringotts first," his father added. "The wizarding world doesn't exactly take rupees."
Emily nodded. "We'll handle that in London. And while we're there…" She hesitated before continuing. "We'll also visit your grandparents."
Arthav tilted his head. "Grandparents?"
"My parents," she clarified. "Your Nana and Nani. You haven't seen them since you were very little."
[Note - In Hindi, 'Nani' means maternal-grandmother, and similarly, 'Nana' means maternal-grandfather.]
"Oh…" He tried to remember, but the memories were vague at best.
"They still live in London?"
Emily nodded. "Yes. After I moved to India, we didn't meet in person much—just phone calls now and then. But I think it's time we visited properly."
Arthav noticed the slight tension in her voice. "Are they… okay with us visiting?"
"They'll be happy to see you," she said softly. "It's been years. And I want you to know where I come from."
He could sense there was more to the story, but he didn't press. Instead, he nodded.
"So when do we go?" he asked.
Emily glanced at Rahul, who sighed. "I wish I could come with you both, but I have some important business meetinggs during that time." He gave Arthav an apologetic smile. "Your mum knows London well, though. You'll be in good hands."
Emily smirked. "Of course he will. Who do you think introduced you to the English way and its magical world in the first place?"
Rahul chuckled. "Haha! Fair point."
Arthav could barely contain his excitement. He was finally going to see the wizarding world up close.
London, Diagon Alley, Gringotts, his first wand…
He was excited, his long awaited adventure was about to begin.
------
The next few days passed in a blur of preparations. Emily handled the logistics while Arthav packed whatever he needed for their trip. There was a slight delay in processing his visa, which caused some mild frustration, but eventually, everything was sorted.
And so, on a bright morning, they boarded their flight to London.
-------
- Heathrow Airport, London, UK -
- June 20, 1991 -
The journey was long, but Arthav was too excited to mind. He spent most of the flight either playing games or staring out the window, imagining what awaited him in the wizarding world. His mother, on the other hand, seemed deep in thought, her expression shifting between nostalgia and apprehension.
When they finally landed at Heathrow Airport, fatigue weighed on them, but anticipation kept Arthav alert. As they moved past immigration and into the arrivals area, his mother scanned the crowd.
It didn't take long before they spotted them.
A small, dignified-looking old woman stood holding a placard with "Emily & Arthav" written in neat handwriting. Despite the wrinkles on her face, it was clear she had once been very beautiful, and there was a hint of familiarity in her appearance, she looked like a much older version of his mother. Beside her stood an older man with sharp features, a neatly combed head of graying hair, and an upright posture that gave off an air of strictness.
The moment the old woman's eyes landed on them, she broke into a wide smile and waved enthusiastically.
Emily's face lit up as well. Without hesitation, she grabbed Arthav's hand and walked briskly toward them.
"Mom! Dad!" she called out.
The old woman—his Nani—barely waited for them to close the distance before she pulled Emily into a tight hug, squeezing her as if she feared she might disappear. Emily melted into the embrace, holding onto her mother just as tightly.
"You're finally here," the old woman murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
"I missed you, Mum," Emily whispered back.
After a long moment, they pulled apart, and his Nani's gaze fell on Arthav.
"Oh, my dear boy," she breathed, her eyes glistening as she reached out and cupped his face. "Look at you! So big now… but still so cute." She pinched his cheek lightly before brushing his hair back, her fingers lingering on the side of his face.
Then she leaned in closer, peering into his eyes.
"Oh my," she murmured in awe, "your eyes… they're even more beautiful in person."
Arthav smiled a little, unsure how to respond to the sudden attention.
His Nana—his grandfather—who had been watching the reunion silently, finally stepped forward. He didn't say much, but he placed a firm, warm hand on Arthav's head, ruffling his hair slightly. His expression remained stern, but there was an unmistakable glint of pride in his eyes.
"Good," he said simply, as if approving of how much Arthav had grown.
Then he turned to Emily, his sharp gaze softening ever so slightly. "So… your beloved Indian husband didn't even come to meet us after so many years? And left you to come alone for such an important occasion for our grandson?"
Emily's warm expression faltered into a slight frown.
"Father, not this again," she sighed, crossing her arms. "He's just busy with work."
His Nana however grunted in response but said nothing more.
Nani, clearly unimpressed with her husband's remark, shot him a glare and lightly swatted his arm. "Oh, hush, Richard. Don't start."
Nana exhaled sharply, then muttered, "Fine, fine."
With that settled, they gathered their luggage and made their way out of the airport.
Waiting for them was a sleek black car, pristine and well-maintained.
Arthav, still processing everything, climbed into the vehicle alongside his mother, Nani, and Nana.
As the car pulled away from the airport and into the bustling streets of London, he glanced at his mother.
She had a small, nostalgic smile on her lips as she stared out the window, taking in the city she had once called home.
Their long-overdue family visit had begun.
