Pokemon: Rising From The Dark

Chapter 92: Miltank

Aoki heard her acknowledge the rules, and the woman in leather said no more. She took a bottle of nail polish from under the counter, twisted it slightly in front of Aoki's face, and applied it calmly.

Blowing on her freshly painted nails, she glanced at the unmoved Aoki and found him dull. She sighed and skipped ahead, saying, "So boring. Just tell me what kind of Pokemon you need. And don't even mention pseudo-legendaries—you can't afford them here."

She wasn't just making assumptions. As a qualified Pokemon hunter, a keen eye was necessary to determine whether a captured Pokemon had value.

When she noticed the Murkrow on Aoki's shoulder, she immediately gauged his overall strength.

The Murkrow was decent in quality. From its appearance, it was well-trained, but its overall strength was still lacking, indicating it hadn't reached a high level.

So she concluded that Aoki wasn't particularly strong. Even if he was hiding some of his abilities, he wouldn't be capable of handling a pseudo-legendary.

Of course, Aoki hadn't come to buy one. While pseudo-legendaries were powerful, their training cycles were too long. By the time one fully matured, Aoki could have already raised a well-trained team.

"I want to buy a Miltank."

Without any extra words, Aoki stated his purpose directly.

"Oh? Not many wild Miltank exist. Most are owned by ranches around Goldenrod City. And does it really matter if a Miltank is wild or not?" the woman in leather asked, eyeing Aoki with mild surprise.

"Do you have one or not?" Aoki asked again.

She shot him an annoyed yet alluring glance and huffed, "Humph. No patience at all. Follow me."

With that, she pulled a large set of keys from the counter drawer, twisted her waist, and sauntered deeper into the store, the tight leather hugging her every curve.

Aoki glanced at her exaggerated movements but remained unfazed. This was a well-known thorny rose—a formidable Trainer, nearly at the level of an Elite.

He followed obediently, keeping his eyes fixed on the floor.

Although she was ahead, the woman in leather still paid attention to Aoki behind her. After noticing his initial glance and subsequent restraint, she smirked. Most people would have burning desire in their eyes, but this one was different. Interesting.

Soon, they arrived in front of a heavy iron door. The woman sifted through her massive keyring, found the right key, inserted it into the sole keyhole, and turned it twice. The thick iron door creaked open.

"Well, here are the Miltank you wanted. Check if any suit you. Tags and prices are on the cages. Let me know if you want one."

With that, she turned away, humming a tune and twirling her keys on her slender fingers. The weight of the keychain looked as if it could snap them.

Aoki waited until she disappeared around the corner before relaxing slightly. He wasn't strong enough yet—facing such a dangerous figure still made him tense.

Refocusing, he examined the cages in front of him.

The small room contained five iron cages, each holding a Miltank—his target.

He activated the system's scan function, instantly pulling up data on all five Pokemon.

From the stats alone, they were all decent. Their levels were within Aoki's acceptable range.

Visually, aside from one noticeably older Miltank, the others looked healthy. They eyed Aoki with a mixture of fear and hostility, a common reaction for captured Pokemon. However, Miltank naturally had mild temperaments, so none were trying to attack the cage or causing a scene.

Still, after being captured by hunters and held for some time, they harbored some resentment toward humans.

Aoki immediately ruled out the oldest Miltank and the highest-leveled one. The latter, at level 30, was the most hostile of the five, glaring at Aoki with undisguised hatred. Aoki had no interest in taming or training it.

Clearly, it had experienced significant trauma when captured, making it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to tame. Such Pokemon rarely accepted human Trainers. Even though its level was the highest, Aoki passed on it.

Another reason was that high-leveled Pokemon already had established battle styles, making it difficult to retrain them.

The remaining three Miltank were all light green-tier and around level 20—excellent candidates.

One of them had the ability Scrappy, allowing it to hit Ghost-type Pokemon with Normal- and Fighting-type moves.

Aoki eliminated this one as well. While Scrappy improved Miltank's offensive capabilities, Aoki's current team was already full of offensive power. Murkrow and the soon-to-be-captured Gligar were both strong attackers. He didn't need another offensive Pokemon.

Aoki was clearly looking for a Miltank as a support Pokemon. After proper training, it would provide survivability and restore his team's battle readiness when needed.

That left two Miltank with the Thick Fat ability, which halves damage from Fire- and Ice-type moves—an ability that significantly boosts survivability.

The difference between the two was clear. The first Miltank had Electric-type offensive moves, leaning toward combat. The second had purely supportive moves, making it a true healer.

Considering his team's future balance, Aoki's choice was clear. The second Miltank was the perfect fit, and he was more than satisfied with his selection.
