Chapter 37: Chapter 37: You Matter More
"Whoa!"
Maki exclaimed as he was abruptly teleported into the room. A massive surge of psychic power pushed him, and he tumbled onto Sabrina's bed.
Thankfully, he landed on his rear, avoiding messing up the bed sheets.
"What are you doing now?"
Looking at Sabrina before him, Maki rubbed his head, clearly exasperated.
"Who was that person?"
"You can't seriously be—"
Maki was about to tease Sabrina when he realized something was off.
Sabrina's body was surrounded by a faint blue aura of psychic energy, her eyes glowing with an unnatural intensity. Her psychic power burned like a raging fire—powerful but unstable.
"Sabrina! Calm down! If this keeps up, your psychic powers will spiral out of control again!"
Maki sat up abruptly, cold sweat forming on his brow. He knew the consequences would be disastrous if Sabrina lost control.
A red flash shot out from the Poké Ball on Maki's belt, releasing Giovanni's Dragonite. Even from inside the Poké Ball, Dragonite had sensed the overwhelming psychic energy emanating from Sabrina.
"Rawr?"
Dragonite glanced at Maki, irritation visible in its expression.
The look clearly said, "What did you do to make her this angry?"
Maki ignored Dragonite's silent scolding and rushed to Sabrina's side. He reached out to grab her shoulders but was blocked by an invisible barrier of psychic energy.
This wasn't the first time Sabrina's powers had gone out of control, but compared to previous incidents, this one seemed relatively "mild."
Even so, no level of "mild" was something Maki could handle.
"The guy I know is male! You don't need to worry about this. And for the record, my preferences are perfectly normal!"
Maki realized he was likely the cause of Sabrina's outburst. If he had to guess, it was... jealousy? Jealousy over Lance?
It sounded absurd, but it was probably the truth. This was also one of the reasons Maki had tried to keep his distance from Sabrina.
Whenever he was around, Sabrina's emotions became volatile, leading to extreme psychic surges.
Maki couldn't understand why this was happening. Despite Sabrina's personality having changed significantly from the original canon, her psychic breakdowns—something absent in the source material—were a recurring issue. He couldn't figure out the reason behind it, so he could only try to help her regain control.
Sabrina, to her credit, was fully aware of her current state. Fortunately, she remained conscious and began meditating to suppress her psychic energy.
As the powerful aura around Sabrina subsided, both Maki and Dragonite let out a sigh of relief.
Dragonite might have been strong, but it wasn't a Psychic-type. If things had escalated, the worst-case scenario would have been using brute force to restrain Sabrina—something neither Maki nor Dragonite wanted.
Dragonite glared at Maki with a mix of annoyance and disbelief.
"Rawr?!"
"Are you seriously telling me this ridiculous reason is why Sabrina lost her temper?"
Although Giovanni had tasked Dragonite with protecting Maki, he had also emphasized watching over Sabrina, whose condition was far from normal.
"I didn't expect this to happen either," Maki muttered helplessly. When Sabrina finally descended from her levitated state, he immediately reached out to steady her.
"Are you okay?"
Due to her lack of physical activity, Sabrina's body wasn't particularly strong. Her arms were soft and delicate, and Maki could feel her weakness. The psychic outburst had clearly taken a toll on her.
"I'm fine. Compared to previous incidents, this one wasn't so bad. I just need some rest," Sabrina replied, shaking her head. While her emotions had triggered this breakdown, Maki suspected there were deeper issues at play.
"What's going on? You shouldn't be losing control over such minor emotional fluctuations anymore," Maki asked, his concern evident. Sabrina gave him a sidelong glance, dismissing his comment—her emotional outburst hadn't felt "minor" to her.
"The stronger my psychic powers grow, the harder they are to control. Today was just the result of accumulated issues finding an outlet."
"Maybe you should stop training your psychic powers for now," Maki suggested. He had proposed this long ago, but Sabrina had always brushed it off, saying, "It won't be a problem."
"I can handle it. Just give me some time—I'll find a way to keep my powers from spiraling out of control," Sabrina insisted, her tone stubborn.
Maki, however, was no longer convinced.
Psychic overload was a simple concept: a Psychic-type's powers exceeded what they could safely control. It was an exceedingly rare phenomenon—most Psychic-types complained about being too weak, not too strong.
Sabrina's talent was simply too extraordinary. For most people, training psychic powers was like learning to walk, but for Sabrina, it was like strapping rockets to her feet.
Maki figured halting her training might help her regain mastery over her abilities.
"No way. You're not using your psychic powers for the next few days. Take this time to rest."
This time, Maki didn't back down. His tone was firm as he added, "I'll personally make sure you don't overdo it."
Sabrina pouted in dissatisfaction, clearly wanting to protest, but she was interrupted by Maki ruffling her hair.
"Your psychic powers aren't what's important. Even now, you're already the strongest psychic in the world, aren't you?"
Between Sabrina's safety and her quest for greater psychic strength, Maki would choose the former without hesitation. Giovanni would do the same—after all, Sabrina was more than just a subordinate to him. She was like a daughter.
Dragonite, feeling like it was intruding on a private moment, quickly retreated into its Poké Ball.
Why stick around to witness this? To be fed even more lovey-dovey nonsense? No thanks.
