Pokémon: I’m Really Not a Team Rocket Spy

Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Lance, the Dragon Master

Extreme Speed, with a +2 priority level, required almost no preparation time while delivering immense power, making it an almost perfect move.

Almost perfect, because despite its sheer power and priority, Extreme Speed had limitations. As a Normal-type move, it didn't gain type advantage against any Pokémon and was resisted by Rock- and Steel-types, while Ghost-types were completely immune.

Moreover, very few Pokémon could learn Extreme Speed. Outside of a select few like Ursaluna that could make full use of its Normal-type bonus, most others lacked the same impact.

Even so, Extreme Speed remained one of the most overpowered moves in existence.

In the Pokémon world, abilities related to move priority were among the most powerful.

For instance:

Prankster gave +1 priority to status moves. Introduced in Generation V, it gained notoriety due to Pokémon like Thundurus. Even the cute appearance of Whimsicott couldn't hide its devious nature, earning it the nickname "Black-Hearted Cotton."

Gale Wings, which granted +1 priority to Flying-type moves, dominated competitive play in Generation VI, reshaping the meta alongside Mega Kangaskhan.

Triage, the signature ability of Comfey, gave a whopping +3 priority to healing moves.

These abilities were so dominant that they were nerfed in the games. Prankster no longer worked against Dark-types, and even moves like Metronome triggered by it would fail. Gale Wings was hit even harder, limited to activating only when the user had full HP, turning it from "must-have" to "garbage wings."

But in the real world? These limitations didn't exist. Prankster affected Dark-types without issue, and Gale Wings regained its full glory. Priority was even more significant in reality, where reaction speed and execution could decide the outcome of a battle.

Maki had often been tempted to find a Pokémon with these abilities for himself. He could already imagine the thrill of commanding a Talonflame to charge recklessly with Brave Bird, smashing through opponents with unstoppable force.

At Lance's command, Dratini instantly sprang into action. Its delicate-looking body transformed into a streak of lightning, shooting forward with unparalleled speed. This was the true power of Extreme Speed—not just its priority, but the way it catapulted a Pokémon into high-velocity motion. Even with the boost from Dragon Dance, Charmander couldn't keep up.

Extreme Speed, huh?

Maki wasn't surprised to see Dratini using this move. It was practically a signature technique for Dragon Clan Dratini.

"Extreme Speed into Dragon Tail!"

Lance wasn't content to simply escape Charmander's grasp. Now that he had unleashed Extreme Speed, he intended to finish the battle swiftly.

In a blur of motion, Dratini appeared before Charmander, spinning its tail with incredible force. Dragon Tail was already a move that relied on raw power to send opponents flying, but paired with Extreme Speed, its impact was even greater.

(How does the Dragon Clan pull this off?)

Maki couldn't help but wonder. Even Giovanni's Dragonite had only mastered Extreme Speed after evolving and undergoing extensive training. Yet here was a mere Dratini using the move with ease.

Giovanni had even attempted to teach the move to other rare Dratini, but no matter how much Dragonite tried to pass on its knowledge, none of them succeeded.

It was as if Extreme Speed was simply beyond the natural capabilities of Dratini, yet somehow the Dragon Clan consistently managed to achieve the impossible.

Thanks to Charmander's earlier Dragon Dance, its speed was now comparable, allowing it to react to the attack even if it couldn't match Dratini's velocity.

"Use Crunch, grab its tail!"

Maki quickly devised a counter, ordering Charmander to rely on its most reliable and powerful move.

Charmander locked eyes on Dratini, waiting for the perfect moment. Just as Dratini's tail swung toward it, Charmander lunged forward, sinking its sharp teeth into the blue and white appendage.

By all rights, the combination of Extreme Speed and Dragon Tail should have sent Charmander flying. But with sheer determination, it clung to Dratini's tail, holding on even as it was whipped around in a full arc.

Finally, Charmander released its grip, though not willingly. The force of the swing was simply too great to withstand.

"That's enough. I concede this match."

Lance raised a hand to signal the end of the battle.

He understood that Dratini wouldn't be able to keep up much longer. Despite the advantage of learning Extreme Speed early, the move placed a significant strain on its small body.

After taking two direct hits from Charmander's Crunch, Dratini was in no shape to use Extreme Speed again. Forcing it to do so would only risk injury, and this was just a friendly battle. There was no need to push things too far.

"Draaa~"

Dratini let out a displeased cry, clearly unhappy with Lance's decision. Its tone was unmistakable: I can still fight!

"There's always next time. I know you'll win it back."

Lance smiled, lifting Dratini into his arms and letting it coil around him.

"Your Charmander is impressive," he admitted, glancing at the Fire Pokémon. While it was clearly exhausted, the spark in its eyes and the lingering effects of Dragon Dance showed it still had plenty of fight left in it.

"No, Dratini is stronger. Without Dragon Dance, Charmander wouldn't have stood a chance."

Maki shook his head. If Lance hadn't underestimated him at the start and allowed Charmander to complete its Dragon Dance, the outcome would likely have been very different.

"A loss is a loss," Lance replied with a chuckle. "Besides, Charmander's mastery of Dragon Dance is remarkable. Unless I had used Extreme Speed right away, I wouldn't have been able to stop it."

This battle had taught Lance an important lesson: never underestimate anyone. In a world full of prodigies and surprises, there was always someone stronger or more prepared.

"And what if Dratini had used Extreme Speed from the beginning?" Maki teased, raising an eyebrow. He wasn't someone to get overly confident, even in victory.

"Uh…" Lance hesitated, unable to come up with a response.

"Let's start over then," Maki said with a grin, extending his hand. "Maki. Just an ordinary Trainer."

"Fair enough."

Lance smiled back, clasping Maki's hand firmly.

"My name is Lance—full name, Lance the Dragon Master!"
