"The Pewter Gym Challenge for the Boulder Badge officially begins! Both trainers, send out your Pokémon!"
With that announcement from Lola, Liam's Pewter Gym challenge was underway.
However, feeling somewhat embarrassed to have a pregnant Lola standing in the referee position the whole time, Liam suggested that, with both parties' agreement, Lola be seated in the audience section, assisted by Brock.
"Alright then! Go, Geodude! Secure this victory for me!" Flint shouted as he tossed a PokéBall. In a burst of light, a round Geodude appeared on the battlefield.
"Geo! Geodude!"
"As expected, the first Pokémon is Geodude. But I wonder if the second one will be Onix or something else," Liam thought as he quickly pulled out a PokéBall and tossed it.
"Go, Sneasel! Claim your first victory!"
"Snea!"
Sneasel appeared on the battlefield with a gleaming presence, standing firmly atop a rock. Its small frame exuded the aura of a deadly opponent, coldly gazing at the Geodude below.
"Hmm? If I'm not mistaken, that Pokémon is a Sneasel from the Johto region, right? I didn't expect you to have a Pokémon from Johto. Looks like you're not just any ordinary trainer," Flint remarked, proving his worth as a Gym Leader by identifying Sneasel instantly.
His expertise was evident.
"I got this little one due to some special circumstances. Gym Leader Flint, you better watch out. Don't underestimate Sneasel just because of its small size—it might cost you," Liam said with a grin.
He held some goodwill toward Brock and his family, so he couldn't resist giving a little warning.
"Heh, I'd never judge a Pokémon's strength by its size. My Geodude may be small, but it's incredibly powerful! Watch and see! Geodude, Rollout!"
"Geo-geo!!"
At the command, Geodude folded its arms and curled into a ball, spinning rapidly toward Sneasel.
"Rollout, huh? A classic Rock-type move. I won't let it build momentum that easily! Sneasel, use Metal Claw!" Liam knew that Rollout became stronger with each successful rotation.
He decided to interrupt it head-on during its first attempt.
"Snea!"
Sneasel swiftly dodged Geodude's rolling assault, sidestepped its trajectory, and leapt after it. Its claws gleamed with metallic light before slamming into Geodude with precision.
The strike was a direct hit, and its effectiveness was evident. The Steel-type move dealt significant damage to the Rock-type Geodude. Letting out a pained cry, Geodude unfurled its arms, its body tumbling through the air before crashing into a nearby rock.
Its face twisted in pain as it squinted at Sneasel, now perched gracefully atop another rock.
"Are you alright, Geodude? Can you still fight?" Flint asked, concern evident on his face.
"Geo... Geo-dude!" Geodude opened its eyes and roared defiantly, determined to continue.
Though clearly injured, Geodude roared defiantly, opening its arms to signal its determination to continue battling.
"Good! That's the spirit! Show the resilience of a Rock-type! Use Rock Throw!"
"Geo!"
Geodude jumped back, grabbing a nearby rock and hurling it toward Sneasel.
"Too slow! Dodge it, Sneasel, and finish this with Icy Wind!" Liam commanded. Rock-type moves could be dangerous for Sneasel, but with its superior speed, avoiding them wasn't an issue.
"Snea!"
With a quick sidestep, Sneasel dodged the incoming rock and closed the distance in a few agile leaps. Taking a deep breath, it unleashed a chilling Icy Wind that enveloped Geodude.
As the frost subsided, the battlefield was left with a frozen Geodude sculpture standing in place.
"Geodude!! Argh, this round is yours. Return, Geodude," Flint conceded, recalling his Pokémon. He gave Liam a serious look.
"It seems like your Pokémon counter mine quite effectively. That Sneasel is incredibly fast, and I don't have anyone who can keep up with it. But I won't give up easily! I'm the unyielding Gray Rock, after all!"
"Go, Rhyhorn! Crush your opponent!"
Flint hurled another PokeBall, and a hefty Rhyhorn emerged with a resounding thud. The ground shook slightly under its weight as it glared at Sneasel with a fierce roar.
"Rhyhorn!"
"Oh? A Rhyhorn? I was expecting an Onix or Graveler. This is a surprise, but I won't back down! Go, Sneasel! Show them your strength. Use Metal Claw!" Though unexpected, Liam was ready to face the new challenge head-on.
"Sneasel!"
Sneasel's claws extended and gleamed metallically as it dashed toward Rhyhorn. In the blink of an eye, it closed the distance.
"Not so fast! Rhyhorn, use Bulldoze!" Flint ordered, clearly having anticipated this moment.
Rhyhorn lifted its front legs and stomped the ground forcefully, sending a shockwave outward. Caught off guard, Sneasel was struck by the wave of energy and sent flying.
It tumbled a few times before springing back up, eyes wary but now surrounded by a faint brownish aura.
However, now encased in a yellow aura, Sneasel struggled to regain composure.
"Shit, that's a speed-reducing move! Sneasel, use Agility to recover!" Liam ordered.
"Not good! That's a speed-reducing move! Sneasel, use Agility to recover your speed!" Liam urged.
"Too late! Rhyhorn, Rock Blast!" Flint capitalized on the opportunity.
"Rhyhorn!"
Several sharp rocks materialized around Rhyhorn before launching toward Sneasel like missiles.
"Sneasel, use Double Team." Liam hurriedly issued the next instruction.
The Double Team move was taught to Sneasel by Liam yesterday, through the use of a TM.
Because Sneasel was not very proficient in it, he was still unfamiliar with it and the number of clones he created was also small.
However, without another option left, Liam could only try this to resist.
Still, despite its best efforts to evade using Double Team, Sneasel was eventually hit by one of the rocks and sent tumbling across the ground.
"Sneasel, return! You did great," Liam said, recalling Sneasel before any further harm could come to it.
"A wise decision. Protecting your Pokémon from unnecessary harm is a Trainer's responsibility. Now, send out your next Pokémon! My Rhyhorn is just getting warmed up!" Flint declared confidently.
"Alright, since you've shown such strength, I'll send out someone even more impressive! Go, Gabite!" Liam tossed another PokeBall high into the air.
A towering, white-scaled shark-like dragon over 1.5 meters tall emerged onto the field. Its sharp teeth gleamed menacingly, and its powerful fins and tail exuded an aura of strength.
