Chapter 32: CHAPTER 31
031 New Product, Psychodynamic! Proud Parents
The cool September wind brushed against Qin Yun's face.
Bathed in the first rays of morning sunlight, Qin Yun and his two Pokémon, Kirlia and Fomantis, completed their first practice session of the Fairy Mode.
The results were mixed. Kirlia could barely sense a faint trace of Nature Power, while Fomantis seemed to resonate with it more easily. The book's description that Fairy Mode was more suited for Grass-type Pokémon proved true.
Despite the modest progress, both Pokémon felt invigorated. The communion with Nature Power had subtly strengthened their spiritual awareness, leaving them more focused. Qin Yun himself felt an unexpected sense of relaxation.
"Maybe, if I persist, I might be able to cultivate Fairy Mode for myself someday," Qin Yun mused.
The idea wasn't entirely impossible. The Pokémon world had its share of human trainers who possessed remarkable abilities Aura Guardians, for instance, could communicate with Pokémon and even wield energy similar to Pokémon moves. If those powers existed, why couldn't he develop something akin to them?
Shaking off his thoughts, Qin Yun opened the system store, eager to see the day's offerings.
The moment he saw the first item, he froze.
"Wait… this is available too?"
[Psychokinesis]: Modeled after the telekinetic ability of Tatsumaki from One Punch Man, this grants the user mind-based superpowers. Limited-time rookie special offer: 3000 points!
Qin Yun's mind raced.
Psychokinesis would be a game-changer, particularly for Kirlia. In the manga, Gardevoir was already a Superpower Queen, capable of manipulating space-time and even teleporting people across dimensions. If Kirlia could harness telekinesis at this stage, her evolution into Gardevoir would make her an absolute monster in battle.
The second item was a [Vitality Cube], an enhanced energy cube with no set type affinity. Unlike standard Advanced Energy Cubes, these specialized cubes helped Pokémon recover from fatigue faster, improving endurance. Price: 22 points per piece, limit of 100 pieces.
The third was [Calcium], a special-attack booster commonly seen in the Pokémon games. Price: 15 points per dose, limit of ten doses.
Qin Yun's excitement was short-lived. He quickly calculated the cost of buying all three items.
"…5,350 points?! That's the equivalent of 53.5 million Pokédollars…"
A bitter smile spread across his face.
"So, I'm just a broke trainer after all… Can't afford any of this stuff."
The thought was frustrating, but it only fueled his determination. If he wanted to keep up with top trainers, he needed to earn more points.
"Alright, time to focus. Step one: become strong enough to enter regional tournaments. Step two: dominate the Hoenn Region's Minor Grand Slam. Step three: aim for the full Grand Slam."
Qin Yun clenched his fists. The road ahead was long, but he had no intention of stopping.
For now, he had a local competition to win.
Although he wasn't particularly excited about it mainly because his opponents seemed too weak he had no intention of getting careless. Pokémon battles are unpredictable. Arrogance leads to failure.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the competition venue, Wang Qiu one of the tournament favorites was brimming with confidence.
His parents stood beside him, looking equally assured.
"Wang Qiu, don't underestimate this Qin Yun," his father warned. "I watched his battle footage. His Fomantis is strong it defeated an entry-level advanced Mankey despite only being at the intermediate level."
Wang Qiu scoffed. "Mankey's nothing. My Ivysaur isn't weak like that. My father went through a lot to get me this high-potential Pokémon."
A smug grin spread across his face.
Not only did he have Ivysaur, but he also had two other strong Pokémon in reserve. If he won this tournament, he'd gain another high-quality Pokémon. That, combined with his rigorous training plan, would allow him to reach Elite Trainer rank within six months.
Becoming a professional trainer was his ultimate goal one his father had never been able to achieve.
The principal of No. 2 Middle School, overhearing the conversation, merely smiled. He, too, believed Qin Yun's chances of winning were slim.
The Tournament Begins
The sixteen qualifying trainers gathered in the waiting area. Today's schedule was intense eight matches would determine who moved on to the quarterfinals.
Reaching the top eight had a lucrative bonus: an on-the-spot 100,000 Pokédollar voucher reward.
The matchups were drawn randomly but with restrictions. The first and second-place finishers from each preliminary group were placed in separate brackets to avoid early eliminations.
Qin Yun's name was the first to be drawn.
A sigh rippled through the waiting area.
His opponent, the second-place finisher from Group Three, looked particularly distressed.
Qin Yun didn't recognize him, meaning he hadn't watched any of his battles. But the way the other trainer's face darkened upon seeing his name said everything he knew he was about to lose.
Still, he wasn't going to forfeit. There was too much at stake.
Winning even one match meant an additional 100,000 Pokédollars, a sum too good to pass up.
Unfortunately for him, reality set in quickly.
His Pokémon, a Zigzagoon, was no match for Qin Yun's Fomantis. Despite having entry-level strength, it lacked the firepower needed to challenge an opponent like Fomantis.
The battle lasted only a few rounds. Qin Yun seized an opening and had Fomantis use Leafage, knocking Zigzagoon out cold.
[Ding! Victory achieved. +40 points earned.]
The reward was higher than expected. Qin Yun speculated that viewer engagement factored into the system's point calculation. The more people who watched a match, the higher the potential reward.
"Congratulations to Qin Yun for winning the first match!" the announcer declared. "He's the first to advance to the quarterfinals and claim a 100,000 Pokédollar voucher prize. Well done!"
Proud Parents
Qin Yun's parents sat in the stands, their expressions filled with pride.
Their son was out there, dominating the competition.
In their neighborhood, they had always been overshadowed by their neighbor, Lao Tian, who constantly bragged about his daughter's achievements how she had gotten into Jiang Cheng University, one of the best schools in the region.
But today, things were different.
Today, their son had done something remarkable.
Advancing to the top eight in a tournament that featured trainers from six different schools was no small feat.
If they rounded up the numbers, didn't that mean Qin Yun was now one of the strongest trainers in the entire school?
For an ordinary family like theirs, this was beyond anything they had imagined.
From now on, when they met their neighbors, they could stand a little taller.
And the next time Lao Tian started bragging, they'd have something to say in return.
