Pokemon: Behold the Father of All Pokemons

Chapter 70: Chapter 68: Hatching New Surprises

The next morning, Ethan could barely contain his excitement. He'd spent the night trying to figure out the best way to introduce his newly unlocked Pokémon to the world, and at daybreak, he made his way to Lab #2. The hallway buzzed with a faint mechanical buzz, but otherwise the place was quiet; most of the researchers were still having their first cups of coffee.

As Ethan pushed open the lab doors, his cell phone buzzed sharply in his pocket. He glanced at the caller ID, then lifted his head to see James stepping out of the incubation room with the phone to his ear.

"You're calling me from twenty feet away?" Ethan teased and ended the call.

James grinned sheepishly. "I just wanted to let you know that we've had a development here. The two large breeding tanks you set up last time are in the final stages of hatching, and the remaining Pokémon eggs have been moved to the incubator."

Ethan's curiosity flared. "Already? That was quicker than I expected."

---

Together, they hurried into the incubation area. Warm, filtered lighting revealed rows of softly glowing equipment and carefully monitored tanks. Scientists in white coats hovered about, scribbling notes and directing each other in hushed voices. The air crackled with anticipation.

"The new species are hatching," James explained, his voice brimming with both excitement and confusion. "Three brand new creatures, and they're... well, strange. One looks like an onion backed toad. It has a literal plant seed sprouting from its spine!"

Ethan's eyes lit up. "Bulbasaur," he muttered under his breath. "That's perfect."

James continued, "One is a small cat with a golden horn on its forehead, like it's actually made of metal. And the third is this owl-like thing. Except it's, well... it's only standing on one leg. Even stranger, there's a golden-furred variety mixed in. Maybe a color mutation?"

Ethan remembered that Hoothoot had a habit of holding one foot up, giving the illusion of a single leg. Hearing that a golden variant had appeared was an unexpected stroke of luck. "Sometimes color mutations appear," he said. "It's rare, but nothing to worry about. Let's take a look."

---

When they reached the newborn enclosures, a small crowd of researchers parted to let Ethan through. Three different species greeted his eyes:

1. Bulbasaur, a sturdy amphibian-like creature with a bright green bulb on its back.

2. Meowth, a pale cat with a shiny golden coin-like ornament on his forehead.

3. Hoothoot, a round-bodied creature with big eyes and a perpetually tucked leg. Among them, one shone with a brilliant golden sheen, a vivid hue that sparkled under the lab lights.

Ethan beamed. "They're perfect," he said quietly. "Just as intended."

Nearby, James poked Hoothoot's side with a gentle probe. "It really does have two feet, just like the notes said, but one is usually hidden. This gold one is particularly unique. Do you think it's healthy?"

"It seems to be," Ethan said. "The color difference won't hurt it. In fact, it's valuable, like a real gem in a world of birds."

James jotted down a series of observations: body temperature, initial response to stimuli, feeding schedule. The entire team worked quickly, labeling and preparing each Pokémon for early care.

---

At the far end of the hatching room stood a single incubator containing an unusually ornate egg. Tiny pulses of pink light flickered across its surface whenever someone approached.

"This is the Mew egg you transferred from the advanced culture tank," James said quietly. "We've been monitoring it daily. Seems stable."

Ethan approached and placed a hand on the smooth shell. For a moment it seemed to tremble in response. "I set its pace to mirror the growth rate of more common species," he explained. "Mew is... special. Better to make sure it matures carefully."

James nodded, scribbling final notes. "We estimate a week or so before it hatches."

With a satisfied nod, Ethan turned back to the three new arrivals. "Let's name them, record them, and prepare them for the next stage."

---

James offered him a pen and clipboard, a grin on his lips. "These three definitely need official names, right?"

"Right," Ethan replied. "We'll call the toad-like one Bulbasaur. The cat... Meowth. And the one-legged owl, Hoothoot." He paused, casting a quick glance at the golden-furred variant. "They all fall under those species names, but I'd call that shiny Hoothoot a special case."

James raised an eyebrow. "Bulbasaur... Meowth... Hoothoot... They sound pretty, er, straightforward."

"Sometimes simple is good," Ethan quipped. "Better than some random mouthful."

One of the younger explorers laughed. "If you say so, Mr. Grave. They're your designs."

---

As the team finished labeling the newborns, Ethan turned to James. "Any empty culture tanks left? Mega-sized ones, to be exact."

James widened his eyes. "You have another batch to install?"

"Four, actually," Ethan said, fishing several small black vials out of his coat pocket. Each resembled an herbal tonic or oral liquid container. "We're deploying the next wave."

A few onlookers blinked in surprise. James just shrugged. "Mr. Grave, we're at a point where we're no longer shocked," he said, half joking. "We'll get the tanks ready."

Ethan grinned. "Right. Let's get on with it."

---

Inside the sprawling culture room, each tank stood behind multiple security measures: password locks, biometric scanners, and discreet cameras. Following established protocol, Ethan punched a code into the main console and the room's surveillance faded out.

"It's all yours," James said, stepping aside. "As usual."

Ethan cautiously approached the row of unoccupied tanks and opened them to reveal the nutrient fluid shimmering under the overhead lights. One by one, he poured in the contents of each black vial.

Growlithe, the loyal fire dog, set to work assisting the law enforcement.

Happiny, a gentle nurturer.

Audino, known for his healing abilities and sensitive hearing.

Ditto, the transforming goo that could mimic almost any shape.

He paused for a moment over the Ditto vial. "Will it also form an egg?" he wondered aloud. "Or hatch in a more amorphous state?"

James watched from a few steps away, curiosity dancing in his eyes. "Knowing your Pokémon, it could surprise us all."

---

Once the vials were in place, Ethan secured the tanks. The next generation of Pokémon seeds began their developmental countdown, each one soon to become a living creature. Outside, the research team was already busy with the three new species, while in a corner, the Mew egg pulsed quietly, waiting for its moment.

Before leaving, Ethan briefly reviewed the system interface in his mind, aware that each new Pokémon added to the sum that would eventually trigger the cryptic "Gift of Palkia. Though the full impact of this event remained a mystery, he couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement and caution at the prospect of changing the world once again.

Satisfied with the day's work, Ethan Grave turned the surveillance back on, nodded to James Hunt and the other researchers, and stepped out into the hallway. The low hum of the lab followed him, a soundtrack to the promise of new Pokémon soon to be added to the ever-growing roster under Pokémon Biotech's care.
