Pokemon: Behold the Father of All Pokemons

Chapter 67: Chapter 65: A Narrow Escape and an Unanswered Question

Well guys it seems we have another Author with Alzheimers, but such is gift we call life.

...

By the time Ethan reached the chaotic third floor, he discovered that reinforcements from the International Genetic Biotechnology Exchange Conference were already there.

A dozen scientists, each with their own genetic creatures, had rushed into battle. They were pinning down a hulking, muscle-bound kangaroo and a bone-spiked gray python, two mysterious creatures Ethan recognized from earlier descriptions of the would-be assassins.

Across the hallway, the two masked assailants stood together: a woman with fiery red hair and a man with shockingly blue curls. Both wore anxious expressions, as if their meticulously planned attack had fallen through.

"Damn it," the red-haired woman muttered. "These fools have ruined our plan!"

She glanced down the corridor where Charles had fled moments before. The scholars surrounding him had managed to stop the killing blow of the muscular kangaroo, giving Sullivan a chance to escape. Now more defenders arrived, forcing the two assassins onto the defensive.

"Let's get out of here," the blue-haired man snapped, trying to lead his two creatures away. "There's no way we can complete our mission with so many people in the way."

They began to retreat under fire, exchanging claws and fangs with the scholars' creatures. Though bloodied, the kangaroo and python fought on with ferocious willpower, emitting a fierce aura that caused some of the tamer beasts to scurry aside in fear.

As they retreated, the assassins cut close to Ethan. From behind him, a scholar yelled, "Mr. Grave, stop them!" But Ethan just stood there with his arms crossed, showing no intention of intervening.

He saw no advantage in helping those who had just fought to save Charles Sullivan's life. Allowing these killers to escape could cause Sullivan more headaches down the road. With little more than a sideways glance, the assassins hurried around the corner, the scholars in hot pursuit.

Hobbes, a representative of the Northam Group, glared at Ethan. "Why didn't you do something?"

"Because I'm not your father," Ethan replied, "nor your grandfather." The sharp sting almost made Hobbes choke on his anger. Ethan had no obligation to risk his Pokémon or himself for these people.

The assassins soon found themselves pinned down at the end of a corridor, glass shards from earlier fights underfoot. Short of a suicidal leap out the window, there was nowhere else to go. Confident of victory, the scholars advanced in a wide semicircle, tightening the noose around the kangaroo and the python.

But the red-haired woman just smiled. "We appreciate the farewell," she murmured, pulling a small metallic sphere from her pouch and tossing it to the ground.

A sharp hiss escaped as thick white smoke billowed out. Panicked screams rang through the corridor. Fearing the smoke might be poisonous, the scholars stumbled back, covering their mouths and noses. Ethan Grave ducked into an alcove, wary of a sudden attack.

A piercing crash echoed through the swirl of smoke, then, as the air cleared, everyone realized the window had been shattered. Outside, two broad-winged birds had appeared from nowhere. Each assassin clung to the bird's taloned feet while still holding onto the battered kangaroo and python. Before the onlookers could react, the birds flapped their powerful wings and soared skyward.

Police sirens wailed from the streets below, but the assassins were already gone. Frustration and confusion swept through the scholars, who ran to the window and saw only a pair of tiny black specks receding in the distance.

The room buzzed with questions:

Who were those two?

What was the 'Ice and Fire Alliance' they mentioned?

How did they have such advanced gene technology to create these deadly creatures?

In the aftermath, Ethan Grave spotted a curious object on the floor: a red and blue map split down the middle. One half radiated a faint warmth, the other a subtle chill. He turned it thoughtfully between his fingers. "Ice and Fire Alliance," he murmured. "Interesting."

Shortly thereafter, law enforcement finally poured into the Tarvok City Exhibition Center, escorting wounded people out and cordoning off parts of the building. The officers questioned Ethan, but he offered only a vague account: He had arrived late, was unsure of what was going on, and decided to keep his Pokémon safe. They didn't press him; civilians had no obligation to intervene against armed assailants.

As the commotion subsided, medics carried away the injured, and it became clear that the incident had resulted in multiple casualties. Many Biolife Alliance members were also injured or traumatized. Faced with such a serious security breach, the police launched an urgent investigation, scouring surveillance footage for any sign of the assassins' airborne escape.

As for the International Genetic Biotechnology Exchange Conference, officials cut it short. Reports of the attack spread like wildfire online, along with speculation about the mysterious assassins, Charles Sullivan's narrow escape, and the resulting casualties.

But amid the upheaval, some of the biotech highlights of the day remained in circulation. The media continued to report on new breakthroughs, mentioning everything from cheaper culture media to gene editing tweaks. They also aired footage of Fern battling Ethan's three Pokémon and losing spectacularly, leading to online ridicule: "Fern's brain must've shorted out, taking on three at once!"

By the time Ethan left the building, dusk had fallen. He turned the red and blue card over to the authorities, then made only a few polite inquiries about what he'd witnessed. He had no interest in further entangling himself in official matters.

As he walked out into the street, he paused to look back. Police lights circled the Exhibition Center, giving its once magnificent facade a flickering red-blue glow. Today had begun as a bright milestone in biotech cooperation, but ended in violence, panic, and unanswered questions. The Ice and Fire Alliance had made a dramatic and mysterious entrance and disappeared without a trace.

Ethan let out a quiet breath, a cold knot of tension wrapped around his stomach. One day's chaos could herald future storms, especially for those like Charles Sullivan, whose enemies seemed willing to stop at nothing to bring him down.
