Percy Jackson: New Age

Chapter 6: Chapter 5: Control Game

Later, once she felt calmer, Kayla Knols decided not to inform her brother about the war council. Despite the inevitable headaches this would cause later, she feared that Will's rehabilitation might stall if she called before the recommended time. So, she told her cabin that she would represent the children of Apollo and informed them of the consequences of contacting Will without his consent. He urgently needed those therapies after the recent wars and would not be interrupted by meddling, foolish mortals. This particular generation was inexplicably obsessed with control—especially Gotham's giant bat, who spent more time trying to control every life in the blackest city in the world than making real changes regarding the most despicable criminals, who killed thousands with every prison break.

The satellite orbiting as the Justice League's control hub housed Earth's greatest heroes: Superman, Zatara, Captain Marvel, Captain Atom, Green Lantern (Jordan and Stewart), and Diana of Themyscira herself. The activities of the "Golden Lady" were still being studied, but she seemed to be a trained magical metahuman.

The Bat also noticed that his companions had varied reactions. Oliver was tense, uncharacteristically silent, and not his usual loud persona—never a good sign for Batman. Arthur and Diana were another concern; they had openly identified themselves as members with little to no influence within certain factions. The League would lose ground if it depended on members of questionable relevance—a concerning prospect.

The document prepared by Dick was displayed on the Watchtower's holographic screens, waiting to be read by the Justice League members, who didn't seem to care much about its content. Instead, they focused on watching one another, trying to decide their course of action. Things might have stayed that way, had it not been for Gotham's Bat, who stared intently at the Starling vigilante:

—Which faction do you belong to?

—What? —murmured Dinah, glancing at her husband.

Oliver made no attempt to respond, clenching his jaw stubbornly.

—You're one of them, aren't you? That's why you refuse to participate. You're a demi—

—Legacy, —Oliver interrupted the Bat, meeting the Dark Knight's intimidating glare without flinching.

—Legacy? —Alice Levin pressed, shaking her head.

—The correct term for me is legacy. I'm a third-generation descendant of a child of Apollo.

—You're a demigod?

—Did you hear anything? —Oliver growled, irritated— I'm the great-grandson of a demigod. I hope your brain can process something simpler because if our leader has such questionable focus, I really doubt our organizational capacity. I do have Ichor in my veins, sure, but it's so diluted I might as well be a normal human.

—You could be, —Batman insisted— you have altered DNA. You're not human, and we needed to know that.

Batman began typing on the screens, and before everyone's eyes, he updated Green Arrow's information.

Oliver Queen watched his leader's actions and shook his head as he noticed one particular line. He found it ironic that they considered him dangerous enough to be a Level 2 threat. He didn't remain silent about it.

—I'm flattered by your belief that I could kill half the League, —he said— but to me, that's unrealistic and unattainable.

Batman shook his head.

—You're a demigod. If Diana is a reference, you're at a similar level.

—Do you have ears, or are you just ignoring me? I'm a damn legacy! Sure, I have Ichor running through my veins, but it's so insignificant that I might as well be fully human.

Batman stubbornly stuck to his stance. Oliver had lied for years; he couldn't guarantee his truthfulness or verify his claims through any reliable sources. Ultimately, it was safer to consider him a ticking time bomb and not risk being naive.

Batman remembered a time when his biggest concern was a chaos-loving clown…

—You know, Batman, —said Captain Marvel thoughtfully— Apollo is the god of archery, so maybe Arrow's skills come from his lineage.

—That idea hasn't been ruled out.

—Can I test it?

—I see no problem with that.

—Well then, —the Champion of the Rock of Eternity approached the Starling vigilante— this won't hurt, Arrow, but stay still. I really don't want to fry your brain.

—Can I request a lawyer?

—Do you want me to be honest? —he asked with a jovial smile, which made Green Arrow shudder.

—No. I don't want you to be honest, —Oliver replied dryly.

—Shall we begin?

—Hades! —the modern Robin Hood cursed.

Captain Marvel gave an amused smile and extended his muscular hand toward Green Arrow's head, golden lightning crackling between the red spandex of his suit.
