The silence was oppressive, weighing heavily on Daniel's shoulders. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his eyes locked on Madame Han's inscrutable face. She seemed to be savoring the moment, her gaze piercing as she began to speak in a low, measured tone. "Daniel, you're a mature young man now, and it's time you took your responsibilities seriously. You're the future heir of the Han Corporation, and your actions will have consequences that affect not just you, but our entire family and business.
Daniel's instincts screamed at him to be wary, but he couldn't quite put his finger on why. "What do you mean, Grandma?" he asked, trying to keep his tone neutral.
Madame Han's expression turned stern, her eyes glinting with determination. "I've arranged for you to marry Jia Li, the daughter of the Li family."
The room fell silent once more, the only sound the ticking of the grandfather clock. Daniel's mind reeled as he struggled to process the bombshell his grandmother had just dropped.
Daniel's eyes widened in shock, his mind racing with protests. "Married? Grandma, you can't be serious!" he exclaimed, trying to keep his tone respectful.
Madame Han's expression remained unyielding. "I am perfectly serious, Daniel. This marriage will secure our family's future and strengthen our business ties with the Li family."
Daniel felt a surge of frustration and resentment. Who was his grandmother to dictate his life choices?
Daniel's protests fell on deaf ears as Madame Han's expression turned icy. "Enough, Daniel. The decision is final. You will get married."
Daniel's anger boiled over, but he knew better than to cross his grandmother. He stormed out of the study, slamming the door behind him.
For the next two days, Daniel ignored his grandmother's summons and avoided his usual haunts. His golddigger friends, grew worried. Where was Daniel, and why hadn't he shown up to fund their lavish parties?
Their concern wasn't for Daniel's well-being, but for their own interests. Without Daniel's generosity, their free ride would come to an abrupt end.
Rachel, the most cunning of the group, decided to take matters into her own hands. She tracked Daniel down to his favorite club, where she found him sitting alone.
"Daniel, what's wrong?" Rachel cooed, her voice dripping with insincerity. "You've been missing for days. We were worried sick."
Daniel raised an eyebrow, his gaze piercing. "You were worried about me?" he repeated, his tone laced with sarcasm.
Rachel's smile faltered for a moment before she recovered. "Of course, Daniel. We care about you deeply."
Daniel snorted. "Save it. I know exactly why you're here."
Rachel's eyes narrowed, her mind racing. What did Daniel know, and how could she spin this to her advantage?
Alex, another one of the group who was standing behind Rachel leaned in, his voice taking on a concerned tone. "Hey, man, I haven't seen you in days. Everything okay? You're not in some kind of trouble, are you?
Daniel shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "I'm fine, just needed some time to myself."
Rachel's eyes sparkled with curiosity. "Time to yourself? That's not like you, Daniel. You're always the life of the party."
Daniel's gaze drifted away, his mind returning to the marriage proposal. He couldn't believe his grandmother was serious.
Alex clapped him on the back. "Hey, man, we're your friends. If something's bothering you, we're here to listen."
Daniel raised an eyebrow, skeptical. Were they really concerned about him, or just worried about losing their meal ticket?
Daniel's gaze locked onto Alex's, his eyes searching for any sign of insincerity. "You really want to know what's bothering me?" he asked, his tone laced with skepticism.
Rachel and Alex exchanged a nervous glance before Rachel nodded enthusiastically. "Of course, Daniel! We're your friends!"
Daniel's smile was wry. "Okay... Let's just say my grandmother has a surprise waiting for me."
Alex's eyes lit up with curiosity. "A surprise? What kind of surprise?"
Daniel leaned in, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Let's just say it involves a ring... and a wedding."
Rachel's eyes widened in shock.
Daniel took a deep breath and blurted out the news. "She's arranged a marriage for me. I'm supposed to get married to someone I've never met."
Rachel's mouth hanging open. Alex's face turned pale, his jaw dropped.
The music and laughter around them faded into the background as the two friends stared at Daniel, incredulous.
Rachel was the first to break the silence, her voice barely above a whisper. "What? Daniel, that's...that's insane!"
Alex's eyes snapped back into focus, his expression urgent. "Daniel, you can't seriously be considering this, are you?"
Daniel's laugh was shaky. "Considering it? I don't have a choice. My grandmother's already made up her mind."
Rachel's expression turned sympathetic. "Daniel, I'm so sorry. That must be really tough for you."
Alexander nodded in agreement. "Yeah, but maybe we can help you figure out a way to convince your grandmother to change her mind."
Daniel's laugh was dry. "You don't know my grandmother. Once she's made up her mind, there's no changing it. Trust me, I've tried."
Rachel's eyes sparkled with determination. "Well, maybe we can help you find a way to get out of this arrangement then."
Daniel's gaze turned skeptical. "And how exactly do you plan on helping me do that?"
Alex leaned in, a conspiratorial look on his face. "We can start by gathering more information about Jia and her family. Maybe there's something we can use to convince your grandmother that this arrangement isn't a good idea."
Rachel nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, and we can also try to come up with a plan to convince your grandmother that you're not interested in getting married right now."
Daniel raised an eyebrow, his expression unyielding. "I doubt it'll be that easy."
Rachel smirks " And why do you think that?"
Daniel's eyes narrowed, his skepticism returning. "You think you can just dig up dirt on that family? Please. That person is not some socialite you can easily manipulate. I was told that she is the heir to an elite family from overseas, with connections and resources that rival our own."
Rachel's eyes widened, a hint of fear flickering across her face. "Daniel, are you saying that if we try to help you get out of this arrangement, we could be putting ourselves at risk?"
Daniel's expression remained grim. "You're not just risking yourselves, you're risking your families' reputations and livelihoods. My grandmother will stop at nothing to protect our family's interests."
Alex's face paled, but Rachel's eyes sparkled with determination. "We're willing to take that risk, Daniel. We can't just sit back and watch you get married off to some stranger."
Daniel's expression remained neutral, his eyes glinting with a hint of amusement. He knew his friends' concern was motivated more by self-interest than genuine care. After all, his wealth and influence had always been a convenient perk for them.
But Daniel didn't call them out on it. He simply shrugged.
Rachel and Alex looked at each other, then back at Daniel. "So, what's the plan?" Rachel asked.
Daniel shrugged. "I'll listen to what you've got. But I'm not promising anything."
Alex grinned. "That's all we can ask for. Let's get to work."
Alex leaned in, a sly grin spreading across his face. "Here's what we'll do. You pretend to go along with the engagement in front of your grandmother. But when she arrives, we'll make sure that she's so miserable that she'll want to leave on her own."
Rachel nodded enthusiastically. "And once she's gone, the engagement will be off, and you'll be free."
Daniel's expression remained neutral, but a spark of amusement danced in his eyes.
He nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Alright, I'll play along. But don't expect me to do any of the dirty work."
Alex grinned. "Don't worry, we've got this. Just pretend to be the happy groom-to-be, and we'll take care of the rest."
After a while, Daniel walked out of the club, the pulsating music and flashing lights fading into the background as he made his way to his car. He drove home, a sly smile still plastered on his face.
And then he walked into his grandmother's study, ready to deliver the news.
And with that one smile which hides a thousand secrets, the game of destiny begins...
