Chapter - 17: Onmyoji
----------
At that very moment, Stella and Bloom, whom I had seen earlier at the pizzeria, came running out of the store, panting. But they abruptly stopped when they too saw the chaos unfolding before their eyes.
I couldn't really blame them—this whole situation was overwhelming, even for me. Civilians were fleeing in every direction, trying to save their lives, making it nearly impossible for me to manage the situation properly.
With so many innocent people around, I couldn't risk using my most destructive fire spells. One wrong move and I'd kill hundreds of bystanders, earning myself the label of a genocidal maniac with no regard for human life.
Not that being called that would have truly bothered me, but my plans were progressing too well to mess them up now just because of my impatience.
As if things weren't complicated enough, to close the portal I would have to get really close to it, and I seriously doubted the blue demon and his army would let me do that without trying to kill me.
Luckily, I had decided to absorb the power of Adross' interdimensional portal, which made things much easier for me to deal with the mess unfolding in front of me.
The screams of panic in the streets intensified. The Winx, who had just come out of the shops with their shopping bags, stopped in their tracks, their faces pale with shock.
I could see the girls staring at the portal in the sky with a mix of determination and fear. Without wasting a second, they transformed. Their shimmering wings unfurled, their magical powers ready for battle.
"We have to stop them before they destroy everything!" Bloom shouted to her friends, launching a powerful fireball at one of the demons.
"We're with you!" Flora added, summoning a barrier of green energy to protect the fleeing civilians.
Tecna and Stella joined the fight, exchanging a quick glance of understanding. Tecna raised her hands, generating a massive holographic stereo that appeared above the battlefield.
Its speakers began to emit pulsating waves of light, spreading through the air like seismic tremors. Stella, for her part, channeled the energy of the sun, amplifying those waves with her light magic, creating a devastating effect that hit the demons, making them stagger.
"Wow, not a bad twist!" Stella exclaimed with a satisfied smile as she watched the demons struggle to withstand the onslaught.
"This is just the beginning," Tecna replied, focused as she adjusted the parameters of the holographic stereo to increase the power of the sound waves.
In just a few minutes, the Winx managed to slow down the demons' assault, much to my surprise. I hadn't expected them to be so effective against the Demon Sorcerors, and I had to admit, I had underestimated their strength.
'They've done a good job, but this is far from over,' I thought, watching the battle rage on. At best, they were only delaying the inevitable. If the portal wasn't closed, more demons would keep coming, and soon there would be hundreds more—along with their commanders, who were anything but easy to defeat. The thought of them possibly carrying the talismans made things even worse for me.
To be clear, the talismans are a powerful set of magical amulets representing the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, each one with its own unique magic and individual power. I had to admit, they weren't bad at all for boosting one's personal strength.
But in a way, the Osmosian part of me couldn't wait to absorb their power, to make it mine. The different abilities I could gain from them would be incredibly useful, a real advantage.
For that reason, I had to play it smart, and not rush. If the opportunity arose, I'd do whatever it took to get what I wanted, without hesitation.
"Icy, Daisy, go help them," I ordered in a firm voice. "You don't need to reveal who you are, so no transformations. Attack from a distance and stay hidden." My tone was harsh, but I was used to giving orders that weren't meant to be questioned.
Their expressions betrayed a certain reluctance; they clearly weren't thrilled about staying on the sidelines. The frustration of having to hold back was evident in their eyes.
Icy crossed her arms, glaring at me with a cold, skeptical look, while Daisy lowered her gaze slightly, visibly unconvinced by the idea of not showing their power.
Both of them knew they had the strength to face the enemy, but they were also smart enough to recognize that this wasn't the time to act impulsively.
"I don't like sitting on the sidelines, out of the action," Icy said in a sharp tone, her eyes never leaving mine, as if she was challenging me, testing just how confident I was in my plan.
Her frustration was understandable. Icy was used to having complete control over situations involving her sisters, always being on the front lines. But this time, she had to trust my judgment.
Her fingers tapped impatiently on her arm as she awaited my response, which didn't take long. "Now is not the time for unnecessary risks," I countered firmly, locking eyes with her.
I knew I had to be clear, leaving no room for doubt. "Trust me. There's a reason for every move I make, and you know that." There was a tense moment of silence before Icy finally looked away, which for her was a clear sign of acceptance.
It was an easy victory, as I had gained her agreement with just a few words. This made it clear that they were starting to trust me. With one more push, they might even be willing to kill for me.
Daisy, ever the more thoughtful of the two, nodded slowly, though reluctantly. "Alright," she said in a calmer, almost resigned tone. "We'll do as you say."
I knew the main reason they disagreed with my decision was their hatred for the Winx, which didn't surprise me at all. I would have to find a way to resolve that later.
And let's not forget—they were unruly girls who needed a good old-fashioned spanking to keep them from ruining my plan just for the thrill of action.
Then, an impatient and almost offended voice broke the tension: "What about me?!" Stormy raised her voice, clearly irritated at being completely overlooked.
"You stay with me," I replied, with a slight smile. I wanted her to know that she was important, especially since I had focused so much on her sisters. It was the perfect chance to avoid any unforeseen outcomes.
"I want to see which lightning is more powerful: yours or Tchang Zu's." I pointed at the demon, lord of lightning, who was preparing his attack beneath the large clouds above him.
Stormy, always eager to prove her strength, crossed her arms with a defiant attitude, but the interest sparkled in her eyes.
"Oh, finally something interesting!" she said with a mischievous smile lighting up her face. Her eyes sparkled with electricity, ready to unleash her power. "Let's see who's stronger then."
I liked her enthusiasm, but I knew that Stormy wouldn't even be able to approach Tchang Zu unless we cleared the way. The demons were obstructing us at every turn, and their power was anything but negligible.
Fortunately, this time I had an extra weapon on my side: magic. My versatility as an Osmosian gave me an advantage, and now, with arcane forces at my disposal, I could really make a difference.
So, it was time to showcase some of my Onmyoji abilities. It was the perfect moment to use them, especially since I knew the Winx, powerful as they were, wouldn't be able to hold out for long.
They couldn't absorb positive emotions to rejuvenate themselves, and it was only a matter of time before they began to falter under the relentless assault of the Demon Sorcerers.
The situation was already precarious, a disaster that risked worsening if I didn't act quickly. I had no intention of dragging it out further, complicating it more than it already was.
I had the right spell in mind, one that could turn the tide of battle in my favor. With my magic and acquired skills, it was just a matter of time before things started to go my way.
Spell Learned
[Anti-Hyakki Yagyou Pentagram]
[A protection technique used to repel spiritual disasters, this barrier technique involves the user dispersing the spells of the five elements and then invoking a number of deities in the process to strengthen it, forming a pentagram that can keep demons at bay]
"Perfect," I couldn't help but mutter as a smile grew on my face. "If only I had had this magic with me when I was at my peak, no one would have been able to take my powers from me..."
But it was useless to think about that at the moment. I finally had a new opportunity to get my revenge, and I couldn't wait to seize it. After all, the longer I waited, the more satisfying it would be.
"God of the east sea, Amei. God of the west sea, Shukuryou. God of the south sea, Kyojou. God of the north sea, Gukyou. Gods of the seven seas, fend off a hundred demons and drive back the fierce disaster. - Order!" My voice echoed through the surroundings as my magical energy surged, causing a massive pentagram to appear both in the sky and on the ground.
Both pentagrams illuminated, and the numerous Demon Sorcerers began to vanish; even the corruption that had spread in the surrounding environment because of them was extinguished and dissolved.
Even the demonic/dragonic creature itself looked up at the sky, screaming in pain and rage at the sight of my intervention, which clearly displeased it given the storm clouds forming above me.
This spell served to prevent and repel demons and corruption from further contaminating the area. The material damage in the dimension of Magix could be rebuilt, but it is infinitely more difficult to purify a place once the corruption has lingered too long.
I allowed myself a moment to admire my work; it seemed that my long hours of reading had finally paid off. Even though it wasn't my primary field of study, I had still dedicated many hours to learning this art.
I suppressed a shiver.
With a small smile, I jumped down from my height and positioned myself in front of Tchang Zu. He seemed intent on focusing entirely on my movements, no longer rampaging randomly.
Of course, he roared, clearly furious on his face, as a large cloud moved above me, only to end with a lightning bolt descending toward me with the clear intention of destroying me.
"Noise," I dismissed him casually as I absorbed the power of the lightning into my body; it was indeed a good source of energy that I didn't mind at all.
Unfortunately for me, he seemed smart enough to understand that I wasn't intimidated, but it would be difficult to test just how wise he actually was, which made things somewhat more challenging for me.
Oh, at least that's what I thought, until I felt a sudden connection with the Red Spellbook. Without hesitation, I summoned it into my hands, and immediately the book began to shine with an intense light that grew increasingly bright, almost blinding.
With curiosity and a bit of caution, I opened the book, and the pages flipped on their own, stopping on a new red inscription. I focused on it, and strangely, I managed to read those words.
Spell Learned
[The Second Spell: Rashield]
[A spell that allows you to create a large rectangular shield that protects you from frontal attacks, charging them with electricity and deflecting them back at the opponent to deal double damage.]
"Ah, now I understand how to unlock the fourth spell, without all that waiting for the right moment or releasing an explosion of emotions like in Dragon Ball," I said, a hungry smile beginning to spread across my lips.
I felt my desire to absorb power intensifying, and I knew exactly what to do. "Tchang Zu," I added in a firm tone, "You will be my meal today."
