Chapter 64: Chapter 64: A Free-Spirited Life
The Fire God Squad passed through the valley and entered the Ghost Banshee's territory.
Jiang Kai noticed that Ruan Yu had been silently following behind him.
He rarely spoke, and whatever Jiang Kai instructed him to do, Ruan Yu complied without a word, very obediently.
Perhaps due to his status as a drunkard, he understood that he held no real value in the Squad.
However, Jiang Kai, currently troubled by the Black Tortoise Guild, had no time to chat with Ruan Yu and simply quickened his pace toward the Banshee's territory.
On the way, Hu Yan turned back to glance at Ruan Yu and suddenly frowned.
At this moment, Ruan Yu's hands were trembling slightly, and he kept his head lowered while walking... Jiang Kai, unfamiliar with Ruan Yu, didn't notice anything unusual, but Hu Yan, being his friend, couldn't overlook it.
He slowed down, walked up to Ruan Yu, and whispered, "Are you craving alcohol?"
Ruan Yu struggled to lift his head and nodded miserably.
Those who enjoy drinking or can drink well aren't called drunkards. True drunkards can't go without alcohol.
Hu Yan looked troubled. "Can't you hold out a little? We're heading into Banshee territory, and it's already dangerous."
Ruan Yu looked at Hu Yan with difficulty, his expression full of pain. "I… I've been holding on, but now I feel awful. I didn't expect Captain Kai to leave the Safe Zone tonight… Old Hu, just let me have one sip... Don't tell Captain Kai. Please!"
Hu Yan understood the physical and psychological dependency drunkards had on alcohol.
If Ruan Yu didn't get a drink soon, he might not even be able to walk.
Having no choice, Hu Yan reluctantly said, "Alright, just a little. Don't screw this up. If you mess up, neither of us will find another Squad."
"I know, I know!" Ruan Yu nodded repeatedly, pulling out a card that transformed into a bottle of beer. Turning away from Jiang Kai, who was walking ahead, he quickly took a sip.
"Feeling better?"
"Much better!"
Only then did Hu Yan relax and hurried to catch up with Jiang Kai.
At that moment, Jiang Kai remained entirely unaware of his two teammates' sneaky actions behind him.
His mind was preoccupied with planning how to make money.
Regular Banshees posed no threat to him, especially since their fear of fire happened to be his advantage.
However, regular Banshees were fewer in number compared to Black Apes and typically acted alone, making large-scale hunting impossible. Additionally, Banshee corpses weren't worth much.
So, the only way to make quick money was… elite Banshees!
But elite Banshees' "Fear Strike" was extremely dangerous. He wasn't the type to rely on direct combat to defeat monsters.
To put it simply, he could kill a Banshee instantly, but conversely, a Banshee could also kill him instantly.
After much deliberation, Jiang Kai gritted his teeth and resolutely said, "I must kill an elite Banshee; otherwise, I won't gather enough money in time."
With luck, he could get one or two decent artifacts, potentially earning hundreds of thousands of Star Coins.
Thinking of this, Jiang Kai pulled out his information card and located the nearest elite cabin.
Glancing at the sky, it was still early morning, with a faint light breaking through the darkness—there was enough time.
Hu Yan looked back at Ruan Yu again and noticed he had taken a few more sips.
"You drank even more?" Hu Yan whispered angrily, glaring at the beer in Ruan Yu's hands.
Ruan Yu no longer carried the cautious and humble demeanor from before. Smiling faintly, his voice even grew louder. "Since I've already drunk, why not drink more? Old Hu, let me tell you, I'm feeling great today..."
Hu Yan immediately covered Ruan Yu's mouth.
"Drunkards always ruin things. Look at you now!" Hu Yan's frustration reached its peak.
As Jiang Kai checked the information card, indicating their next destination to be the elite cabin, Hu Yan fretted over the increasingly intoxicated Ruan Yu.
"Old Hu! Ruan Yu!"
Hearing Jiang Kai's call, Hu Yan shot a glare full of hatred at Ruan Yu, snatched the beer from him, and growled, "Stop drinking, you idiot."
After scolding, he quickly ran toward Jiang Kai.
Behind him, Ruan Yu smirked drunkenly, slurring his words, "Tsk, if you wanted a drink, you could've just said so. No need to grab it. Heh heh, good thing I still have a few bottles left..." He chuckled as he opened another bottle.
"Where's Ruan Yu?" Jiang Kai asked when he didn't see him.
"Oh, uh, he… has a stomachache. Whatever you need, just tell me," Hu Yan replied hurriedly.
Jiang Kai didn't have time to waste. "The largest cabin up ahead should be the elite cabin, right?"
"Yes."
"There aren't other Banshees around the elite cabin, so I'll lure her out. If you see me affected by 'Fear Strike,' try to draw her attention. Once I recover, I'll finish her off."
"Fear Strike is indeed formidable. Many high-level players would rather hunt armored salamanders in deeper areas than face an elite Banshee," Hu Yan nodded. "Captain Kai, understood. Be careful yourself."
As they finalized the plan, a sudden cold wind swept through the area.
Unlike a normal night breeze, this wind carried a mournful wailing, like a woman sobbing. The eerie sound sent shivers down Jiang Kai and Hu Yan's spines.
Both of them instinctively looked up. To their shock, a white figure had appeared in midair in front of them.
The white figure, about two meters tall, resembled a woman draped in a nightgown, floating silently in the air. The gown's hem fluttered gently in the wind.
Looking further up, two black, emaciated arms extended from the sleeves, with unnaturally long, sharp fingers that resembled spikes rather than digits.
Her face was obscured by black hair cascading down to her waist.
Seeing this, both Jiang Kai and Hu Yan tensed up immediately.
It seemed there was no need for Jiang Kai to lure her out—the Banshee had already found them.
"I heard you were looking for me?" The white figure spoke in an eerie, feminine voice, followed by a sinister laugh. "It's been so long since I've seen a living soul. I'm so happy."
Jiang Kai swallowed hard, pulling Hu Yan back. "Stay behind me!" he muttered, quietly drawing his Chasing Nine Tribulations.
At that moment, the Banshee's long hair parted slowly to reveal a pale face painted with heavy makeup. Her exaggerated, ghastly grin widened unnaturally.
Jiang Kai locked eyes with her grotesquely wide pupils, feeling a chill run down his spine. Swallowing nervously, he forced a taunt, "You think this scares me? I've seen worse in my nightmares!"
Before his voice even faded, the Banshee's face suddenly split open down the middle.
With a bloodcurdling shriek, her face tore itself apart, revealing blood vessels, nerves, and sinews, forming a grotesque dual-faced monstrosity.
Jiang Kai felt his body grow sluggish, barely able to lift his weapon as an overwhelming fear gripped him.
"Fear Strike!" he realized with despair, watching the grotesque creature close in.
Just as Jiang Kai braced for the end, a shadow dashed out from the bushes, clutching a barrel of wine and stumbling drunkenly.
With a slurred roar, the figure shouted, "I, Ruan Yu, have never yielded to anyone. Forgive me for my free-spirited life."
