Chapter 279: Chapter 279: A Draw
Listening to Emil's introduction, Urouge's worldview was shaken, expanding his perspective. He realized how ignorant he had been. Hearing about the Blue Sea and the Infinite Pirates filled him with excitement and ambition. The world was vast, and his small Sky Island could no longer contain his spirit.
He was determined to venture to the Blue Sea, to explore this immense world, and to become as formidable as the Island Master beside him!
The Sky Island, while not small, wasn't large either. After seven days of relentless search by the Infinite Pirates and the island's residents, every corner of the island was scoured.
Finally, they found the Devil Fruit Li Yuan was seeking.
"Captain, is this the Devil Fruit you were looking for?" Emil excitedly presented the fruit to Li Yuan.
"Yes, that's the one!" Li Yuan confirmed after comparing it with the Devil Fruit compendium. "You did well, Emil. Go see Yadina when we return and claim your 300 million Berries reward."
The Paramecia-type Causality Fruit, a powerful addition to his collection, pleased Li Yuan greatly.
"Thank you, Captain!" Emil replied, thrilled about the reward. His salary alone wasn't enough for his expenses, so the extra 300 million Berries would last him a long time.
Meanwhile, in the Ed War Sea:
The catastrophic storm continued unabated, growing more ferocious by the day. The battle between the Flying Pirates and the Roger Pirates also raged on.
Initially, the Flying Pirates held the advantage in numbers, pressing the Roger Pirates hard. However, the Roger Pirates fought fiercely, willing to die to take a few enemies with them.
As the battle wore on, casualties mounted. The Roger Pirates suffered fewer losses, while the Flying Pirates' casualties were three times higher.
For every Roger crew member lost, three Flying Pirates fell. Ultimately, the Roger Pirates' superior combat skills meant that when fighting to the death, they often took down multiple foes.
After losing over sixty men, Shiki realized the situation. He was eager to defeat the Roger Pirates, but not at the cost of heavy casualties among his elite forces.
The men he brought were the cream of the Flying Pirates. Losing too many would severely weaken his overall power.
Especially his top three officers, whom he had painstakingly nurtured. As his most valuable assets in his quest for world domination, he couldn't afford to lose them now.
Reason overcame Shiki's initial anger. He ordered his crew not to fight to the death. If severely injured, they were to retreat to the ships to recover.
This decision led to a cessation of fighting among the non-elite combatants after three days. Only the top fighters from both crews continued to battle in the air.
After five more days, even Reinhardt withdrew, having reached his limit against Rayleigh. Continuing would endanger his life.
Harold and Aslan also ceased their assault on Jabba, acknowledging their inability to defeat him despite their combined efforts.
With Reinhardt out, Rayleigh was free to join the fight against them, and they knew they would lose if he did.
By the fifth day, only Shiki and Roger remained locked in combat.
"Shahaha, Roger, surrender the Ancient Weapons' secrets, and I'll let you go!" Shiki demanded, still hoping to turn the tide.
"Hahaha, Shiki, I've told you, I have no such secrets!" Roger laughed, wielding his blade Ace with the unyielding will of a free spirit.
Five days and nights of battle had not exhausted them. Their strength was evenly matched, and despite Shiki's aerial advantage, he couldn't defeat Roger.
Roger, supported by the storm he had conjured, gained strength from the elements, reducing his fatigue and enhancing his attacks and mobility.
"Damn you, Roger!" Shiki cursed, realizing he couldn't win.
Even if he gained a slight edge, he lacked the strength to finish Roger off quickly. And with Rayleigh and Jabba still ready to fight, he would eventually be overwhelmed.
Stalemate loomed. If Roger recovered, it would start all over again.
"Next time, you won't be so lucky!" Shiki declared, breaking off the fight and retreating from the storm with his crew.
Though the Flying Pirates hadn't lost, failing to secure the Ancient Weapons' secrets equated to a defeat of sorts.
Shiki planned to strengthen his forces further before attacking again, confident he would eventually triumph.
As Shiki departed, Roger returned to the Oro Jackson, but collapsed on the deck, coughing up blood.
In reality, Roger was at his limit. Had Shiki continued, he would have won.
"Doctor Crocus, come quickly! The Captain!" Buggy shouted in panic.
"Don't worry, it's just stress-induced bleeding. He'll be fine after some rest," Crocus, the ship's doctor, assured.
"Just bleeding? But the Captain coughed up blood!" Buggy exclaimed, questioning Crocus's calm demeanor.
"Idiot, if the doctor says he's okay, then he's okay!" Shanks scolded, smacking Buggy on the head.
"Stop it, you two. Let the Captain rest," Rayleigh and Jabba said, helping Roger to his cabin, urging Buggy and Shanks to be quiet.
Outside the storm:
The spies who had waited ten days and nights saw the Flying Pirates emerge but received no explanation. Shiki simply left, taking his forces with him, offering no answers.
"Did Shiki beat the Roger Pirates?" Charlotte Linlin pondered, having ventured from Totto Land to the Ed War Sea to confront Roger.
Yet Shiki's abrupt departure left her with no opportunity to inquire. Calling him would seem like she feared the Roger Pirates, so she decided to wait.
Despite his critical condition, Roger kept the storm raging, ensuring no one dared approach. Meanwhile, he quietly recovered within its protective veil.
Charlotte Linlin and the spies remained, waiting for the storm to abate. When it finally did, they saw the Oro Jackson and confirmed Roger's top fighters were unharmed.
The battle had ended in a draw. The Flying Pirates hadn't defeated the Roger Pirates, nor had they been defeated themselves.
"Damn Shiki, he couldn't even handle the Roger Pirates!" Linlin fumed, seeing no losses among Roger's crew. Despite her hatred, she chose not to engage, swallowing her anger and leaving the Ed War Sea.
A woman's revenge is never late; if she couldn't have it now, she would wait for the right time.
