One Piece: My code name is Green Bull

Chapter 65: Chapter 65: The Actor’s Self-Cultivation

"Phew!"

Jon exhaled heavily, stood up, and swayed a little. His face was pale, his forehead covered in sweat, and he looked completely exhausted, as if he had used up all his energy and was on the verge of collapse.

Tsuru glanced at the ripened corn, then at Jon, her expression turning odd. Her lips twitched.

Others might not know Jon well, but she certainly did. There was only a tiny 10-square-meter patch of corn, and yet he looked this drained? Did he think everyone else was a fool?

"This kid is overdoing it. I told him to tone it down, and this is what he comes up with?"

Garp widened his eyes, scanning the sweaty Jon with an equally strange look.

Although he didn't know Jon as well as Tsuru, he was certain Jon's abilities went far beyond this. To grow such a small amount of corn and end up looking this worn out? That wasn't the Jon he knew.

"Fleet Admiral Sengoku, mission accomplished! I've successfully grown corn!"

Jon reported to Sengoku, panting heavily to emphasize his exhaustion.

Sengoku didn't say anything at first. Although he didn't fully understand the extent of Jon's abilities, he trusted Tsuru's recommendation. Surely, Jon wasn't this weak.

This small amount of corn—how many people could it even feed?

"Young man, is this the best you can do? This measly bit of corn wouldn't even fill me up in one meal!"

At that moment, a navy vice admiral stepped forward, glaring at Jon with a dark expression and barking at him.

Jon turned his gaze toward him, feeling quite annoyed. Who the hell was this guy?

Sure, he didn't grow much corn, but saying it wasn't enough for one meal was an exaggeration. At least there were dozens of pounds of it—was this guy a bottomless pit?

Still, the man was a vice admiral, far above Jon in rank. Jon couldn't openly refute him.

Sengoku, however, was more understanding. "Jon, can you keep producing? This amount is far from enough."

Jon wanted to keep holding back, but the situation seemed dire. He discreetly glanced at Tsuru for help.

Noticing his subtle cue, Tsuru quickly stepped in, "Jon is probably unfamiliar with growing this type of crop for the first time. Let him rest for a bit, and he'll try again later."

"Exactly," Jon chimed in, "I wasn't able to control my powers very well earlier. Let me eat something first, and I'll give it another go."

Food was promptly brought to Jon, and he began eating, ignoring the stares from those around him while deep in thought.

The small amount of corn he had produced earlier was a test to gauge Sengoku and the others' reactions. If they were satisfied with that amount, he would stick with it.

But it was clear now that the quantity he'd produced wasn't acceptable to them. He would have to reassess his approach.

"This kid really has nerves of steel. Even in this situation, he's eating like nothing's wrong. It's just like me," Garp whispered to Tsuru, standing beside her.

The two of them, having interacted with Jon frequently, naturally understood him better than others.

After eating and drinking his fill, Jon stood up again, this time grabbing a larger handful of seeds.

Just like before, he scattered the seeds on the ground, pressed his hands down, and shouted, "Grow!"

The seeds began sprouting, their green shoots emerging from the soil. But this time, the area covered was much larger—over ten times the size of his earlier attempt.

Excitement lit up the faces of everyone around him. The corn Jon had produced earlier was indeed far too little. But this time, the increased range meant there would be exponentially more corn.

Jon wasn't about to make himself look bad. Earlier, producing a 10-square-meter patch had taken him about five minutes. Now, with a much larger area, he deliberately dragged out the process to make it seem more exhausting.

For twenty whole minutes, everyone watched as the corn seeds sprouted, grew, and eventually ripened. By the end, a vast field of corn surrounded them, with each plant bearing plump, ripe ears.

When Jon was finally done, he didn't even try to stand up. He flopped onto the ground, panting heavily.

Tsuru's lips twitched again. "This kid... The contrast between his two attempts is so glaring. What is he thinking?"

Rear Admiral Lucien from the logistics department was practically glowing with excitement. His eyes sparkled. "Over an acre! Over an acre! The yield here is at least over a thousand pounds, maybe more. This much corn could feed over a hundred people. And if he could grow other grains, the yield might be even greater!"

Lucien then turned his fiery gaze toward Jon.

"Captain Jon, your abilities make you a natural fit for logistics! Come join us. With you on board, the logistics department will become the Navy's most vital division. Everyone will depend on us. Come on, logistics is your true home!"

Jon's expression turned awkward as he listened to Lucien's rambling.

No way was he joining logistics. The advisory division was far more enjoyable—why would he want to spend his days growing crops in logistics? He'd have to be out of his mind to agree.

Seeing that Lucien was getting carried away, Sengoku stepped in. It sounded as if Lucien was claiming the logistics department would outrank even him if Jon joined.

"All right, Rear Admiral Lucien. Get your people to start counting the yield."

Lucien, reluctant but unable to argue, had no choice but to leave with his team to harvest the corn.

Sengoku turned to Jon with a satisfied look. "Jon, you've done very well. With this ability, we won't have to worry about food shortages anymore. Producing this much food will save us a significant amount of military expenses. You've made a great contribution."

Jon replied weakly, "Fleet Admiral Sengoku, you're too kind. I'm just doing my duty."

This time, Jon wasn't faking it—he had indeed used up a lot of energy. But not all of it had gone into growing corn.

In fact, he had deliberately created a large number of weeds in the cornfield to make the process more draining and appear more taxing on him. But it seemed no one had noticed the weeds—all their attention was on the corn.

"If you had this ability, you should've used it earlier. Were you just trying to mess with us by only growing a small patch of corn earlier?"

Just as everyone was celebrating, a cold, disapproving voice rang out. The same vice admiral from before stepped forward, glaring at Jon again.

Jon's face darkened. Who the hell was this guy, and why was he picking on him nonstop?

Jon couldn't respond, but someone else wasn't about to let it slide. Tsuru, his superior, fixed the vice admiral with a sharp glare.

"Vice Admiral Favors, every ability requires an adjustment period. This was Jon's first time growing this type of crop—wouldn't he need time to adapt? Jon is part of our advisory division and was recommended by me. If you have any complaints, feel free to take them up with me."

Favors' face turned ugly as Tsuru confronted him. He opened his mouth but quickly shut it again. Though they were both vice admirals, he couldn't afford to offend Tsuru.

The Navy had its factions, and Sengoku, Garp, and Tsuru formed an iron triangle. Sengoku was the Fleet Admiral, Garp was the strongest fighter, and Tsuru commanded the esteemed advisory division. Despite being a vice admiral, her status was nearly on par with Sengoku's.

Even though Favors outranked Jon, Tsuru's words carried far more weight. Challenging Jon in her presence was practically asking for trouble.

As Favors backed down, the crowd exchanged glances, but no one pitied him.

Jon's ability had already proven its value, and he was bound to make significant contributions. While everyone else was celebrating, Favors insisted on stirring up trouble, and he'd done it right in front of Tsuru. He was practically digging his own grave.

Everyone knew Tsuru was usually calm and composed, rarely showing her temper. For her to speak so bluntly now showed how truly displeased she was.
