Chapter 58: Chapter 58: The New World
Jon departed the Navy Headquarters base alongside Vice Admiral Tsuru. They were accompanied by two warships.
Tsuru brought along 200 female soldiers on her ship. To avoid any awkward situations, Jon chose not to board Tsuru's warship and instead traveled on another. Although he wasn't familiar with the crew on his ship, it was far less stressful than being surrounded by a group of female soldiers.
Unlike pirates, the navy could reach the New World by directly crossing the Red Line, although this required changing ships midway.
This wasn't Jon's first time crossing the Red Line. When he traveled from the South Blue to the Grand Line, he had also crossed it.
The journey to the Grand Line's second half was uneventful. After a few days of sailing, they transitioned from the first half, known as Paradise, into the second half—the New World.
"So, this is the New World?"
As soon as they entered, Jon curiously surveyed his surroundings. But apart from the endless expanse of ocean, there was nothing remarkable to see.
At first glance, the New World didn't appear different from the first half of the Grand Line. The key difference lay in the power dynamics: the number of pirates in the New World far exceeded that of Paradise, and their strength was significantly greater.
Unlike the era depicted in the "One Piece" storyline, the navy now had five branches stationed in the New World—G1, G3, G5, G7, and G9. Each branch was commanded by a vice admiral, and they were incredibly powerful.
However, during the rise of the Rocks Pirates several years ago, two naval branches were obliterated by them and had yet to fully recover.
In the two to three years following the fall of the Rocks Pirates, the New World had remained relatively stable. The navy had maintained control. But with the emergence of powerful figures like Shiki the Golden Lion, Roger, and Whitebeard, the New World was once again plunged into chaos.
Currently, Shiki stood as the dominant force in the New World, with his influence spanning many regions. While Whitebeard and Roger were well-known, they each commanded only a single pirate crew and lacked the territorial control of figures like Charlotte Linlin.
However, due to their immense individual strength, Whitebeard and Roger's reputations rivaled—if not surpassed—Linlin's, making them the only two pirates who could stand toe-to-toe with Shiki.
In addition to these four, former Rocks Pirates like Captain John, Silver Axe, Wang Zhi, and Kaido had also established their own crews and were becoming increasingly prominent.
The navy's decision to deploy Sengoku, Garp, and Tsuru—three of its top leaders—to the New World was prompted by the recent provocations from Shiki's fleet.
For reasons unknown, Shiki had launched a direct assault on the navy's G7 branch, using his devastating powers to nearly destroy it. The attack resulted in massive casualties, including the death of the branch's commanding vice admiral.
Such brazen and ruthless actions pushed Fleet Admiral Kong beyond his limits. In response, he immediately dispatched the three leaders to retaliate against the pirates in the New World.
Shiki's attack had also emboldened other pirate factions, creating the most chaotic period in the New World since the fall of the Rocks Pirates.
Jon and his group were bound for the G1 branch. Located in the New World, it was the largest naval branch on the Grand Line and would later swap positions with Marineford as the main headquarters.
Like Marineford, G1 was strategically situated near the Red Line, making it an ideal base for naval operations in the New World.
The three warships arrived one after another at the G1 branch. Jon disembarked with the others and set foot on the massive base.
"Hey, Jon!"
Jon turned and was surprised to see Borsalino and Pemberton. Overjoyed, he hurried over.
"Borsalino! Pemberton! What are you guys doing here? Did you know I was coming and came to greet me?"
Borsalino laughed and playfully punched Jon.
"Jon, you've grown taller. A few more years, and you'll catch up to me."
Jon grinned and returned the punch with equal force. "And you're still as sneaky as ever."
"Who are you calling sneaky?" Borsalino shot back indignantly.
Since graduating, Borsalino and Sakazuki had been sent to the New World shortly after. It had been over a year since they last saw each other.
In that time, Borsalino had risen to the rank of lieutenant commander, indicating that he'd made some achievements in the New World.
Jon then turned to Pemberton, who hadn't changed much since they last met.
"Where's Sakazuki?"
Borsalino replied, "Sakazuki and Dorag are out on patrol. They won't be back for a couple of days."
Pemberton added, "We heard you'd be assigned under Admiral Sengoku, so we picked out a dorm for you right next to ours. Jon, do you want to stay with us, or would you rather bunk with Vice Admiral Tsuru's female soldiers?"
Jon had already been informed by Tsuru that he'd be transferred to the front lines, but he didn't expect Pemberton to know so soon, let alone arrange his dorm for him.
"Shut up."
Jon glared at Pemberton before saying, "Come on, show me the dorm first."
The G1 branch was massive, capable of housing tens of thousands of troops without feeling overcrowded. Every soldier had a designated living space. Lower-ranked soldiers shared dormitories, while higher-ranking officers enjoyed better accommodations.
As a captain, Jon was considered a mid-level officer and was entitled to a private dormitory.
Thanks to his strong bond with Borsalino and Pemberton, they had arranged for Jon's dorm to be right next to theirs, saving him a lot of hassle.
After unpacking his belongings, Jon sat down to chat with the two.
"Jon, let me tell you—life was so much better back at headquarters. This New World is a nightmare," Borsalino complained, his expression full of frustration.
"Is it really that bad?" Jon asked, puzzled.
"If you don't believe me, ask Pemberton. He's been here a few months and knows how things are."
When Jon turned to Pemberton, he nodded. "Borsalino's right. It's complete chaos here. I've been here for just over three months and have already fought pirates more than ten times. We've lost a lot of comrades. The pirates here are far stronger than those in Paradise."
Though Roger had yet to become Pirate King and the Great Pirate Era hadn't started, the pirates of the New World were still far more formidable than those in the Four Seas or Paradise.
"Corwell and Blut were both killed in recent battles. Several of our classmates have already fallen."
Pemberton's tone was somber, and even Borsalino fell silent.
They had all spent a year training together as classmates and comrades. Losing them so suddenly was a heavy blow.
