Chapter 161: Chapter 161: Cobra the Quirky Middle-Aged King
The Lightbringer had smoothly picked up the chief instructor, Issho, and was now sailing along the eastern bank of the Sandora River toward Alubarna, the capital of Alabasta.
"Princess Vivi, Vice Admiral Wright's warship has arrived!"
Captain of the Guard Igaram reported the progress of the Lightbringer to Princess Vivi.
"They're finally here!" Vivi exclaimed, her large, sparkling eyes full of excitement. "Take me there immediately!"
She was about to dash out when—
"Princess! Your manners, your manners!" Igaram yelled, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. "You're a princess of Alabasta! You can't just rush out recklessly!"
"Guard squad! Escort the princess to the port!"
"I'm not a stranger to going out alone, you know..." Vivi pouted as she slowed her pace, waiting for Igaram and the guards to catch up. Her excitement soon reignited.
Little did she know the trouble her past solo excursions had caused for King Cobra and Igaram, who had to work tirelessly to protect her in secret!
At the eastern bank of the Sandora River, Vice Admiral Wright, along with Smoker and Hina, was handling formalities with officials from Alabasta's diplomatic department.
As for Issho, the chief instructor, he had chosen to remain aboard the Lightbringer. The destitute instructor seemed to have taken a particular liking to the ship's chef's special soba noodles, indulging in several bowls a day.
Alabasta was evidently prepared for the upcoming Reverie. A grand envoy ship awaited at the port, ready to embark.
"Your Majesty!"
Hearing the greetings of the Alabastan soldiers, Wright and his group turned to see King Cobra arriving at the port, accompanied by his deputy guard captain—Chaka the Jackal.
"Your Majesty King Cobra," Wright greeted with genuine respect. While Cobra might come off as a bit old-fashioned as a ruler, there was no denying that under his reign, Alabasta had flourished into one of the happiest nations in the world.
"Vice Admiral Wright, Captain Smoker, Commander Hina," Cobra greeted warmly.
However, his gaze lingered on Wright for an uncomfortably long time, leaving Wright feeling a bit uneasy.
"Wait, is this… the legendary 'father-in-law's scrutiny'?" Wright thought, breaking into a cold sweat despite his usual composure. "What's going on with this guy? Vivi is only ten years old!"
Curious, Wright subtly activated his Observation Haki to sense Cobra's thoughts. What he found made him curse internally.
"This eccentric middle-aged man... No wonder eight years later, even in a wheelchair during the Reverie, he's still preoccupied with finding a son-in-law!"
Noticing the increasingly peculiar atmosphere, Wright forced a smile and broke the silence. "Your Majesty Cobra, has your envoy team completed their preparations for departure?"
"Huh?" Cobra snapped out of his thoughts, realizing his prolonged gaze had been inappropriate for someone of his status.
"Your Majesty, the envoy team..." Chaka softly reminded the absent-minded king, who promptly cleared his throat to regain his regal composure.
"Yes, the envoy team is fully prepared and ready to depart at any time," Cobra declared with authority. Then, with a smile, he added, "This time, I will also be bringing my daughter, Vivi, to the Reverie."
"My guard captain has already gone to inform her. They should be arriving soon."
At the mention of Vivi, Cobra's expression softened, his smile turning apologetic as he looked at Wright. "Vice Admiral Wright, I hope you don't mind the extra task of protecting us personally."
"Mind? Not at all!" Wright chuckled inwardly. "If it weren't for this assignment, how else would I have met Issho? I should be thanking you!"
Outwardly, Wright responded with a hearty laugh. "Not at all, Your Majesty. Compared to escorting some of the more... unpleasant envoys from other nations, it's an honor to protect Alabasta!"
"Uh... Vice Admiral Wright, you're certainly... quite humorous," Cobra replied with a sheepish laugh, discreetly wiping the sweat off his brow. The young vice admiral's distaste for certain troublesome nations was rather blunt.
"Princess! Princess, slow down!"
From afar, Igaram's booming voice could be heard, drawing everyone's attention.
Wright and Cobra turned to see Igaram, with his distinctive curly hair, leading the guard squad in pursuit of a lively little girl with long blue hair. The girl was running excitedly toward the port.
"Vivi!" Cobra beamed, bending down and opening his arms to greet his daughter.
But Vivi dashed past him like a whirlwind, heading straight for Wright. Cobra's wide grin froze in place, his open mouth filling with a gust of sand.
"Pfft..."
Chaka and the guards struggled to hold back their laughter as they hurried to assist their abandoned king, tidying his attire and offering psychological consolation.
Meanwhile, Igaram stumbled over, casting an apologetic glance at Cobra before hastily catching up to Vivi.
"Are you Vice Admiral Wright?"
Vivi, with her sparkling blue eyes, gazed up at Wright in awe.
Kneeling down to her level, Wright offered a warm smile. "Hello, Princess Vivi. I'm Wright—pleased to meet you!"
"Wow! You're just as kind and approachable as the rumors say!" Vivi exclaimed, her eyes turning into crescent moons. "That's wonderful! I have so many questions I want to ask you!"
"Questions, huh?" Wright chuckled. "I'd be happy to answer them. But for now, let's focus on preparing for the envoy's departure."
"It'll take a while to reach Mary Geoise, so we'll have plenty of time to talk along the way."
"Ah!"
Realizing her excitement had made her forget her surroundings, Vivi blushed as she noticed her father standing stiffly nearby.
"You're right. I got carried away..."
"Father!"
After bowing respectfully to Wright, Smoker, and Hina, Vivi ran back to comfort her sulking father.
"What an adorable little girl," Hina remarked, smiling as she watched Vivi. Nudging Smoker, she whispered, "Hey, Smokey, don't you think Vice Admiral Wright is especially popular with young girls?"
"...So what?" Smoker replied with a roll of his eyes. "I'll never understand how people like Rosinante and Wright can be so patient with kids. They're nothing but trouble!"
"..."
If not for the inappropriate setting, Hina felt she might just use her "Cage of Feathers" technique to bind this insensitive "White Hunter" and toss him into the sea!
