Nightmare Assault

Chapter 305: Performance

Jiang Cheng shook his head, “I believe Young Master Huang is real, but he is already dead. The ghost should be Young Master Huang’s new bride too.” Jiang Cheng continued, “Elder Huang misses his son too much and started to act like his son at night. That was the only way he could feel that his son was still with him.”

Fatty thought about it and agreed with the Doctor. His hypothesis was more realistic. Young Master Huang had to have existed in the past, or else many things couldn’t have been explained.

“By the way, Doctor,” Fatty suddenly remembered something, “There’s something I needed to tell you. Before you ran out, we heard the drum…”

Jiang Cheng frowned. “You heard the drum?!”

“Yes.” Fatty nodded, “It sounded similar to the drum from the lake. I wanted to ask you when you ran out. However, it was too urgent. You pulled me and ran, so I didn’t get the chance to ask.”

The drum sound was because Shi Liaozhi knocked over another instrument and it landed on the drum. It wasn’t intentional so the sound wasn’t loud. He didn’t expect Fatty, who was outside, to have heard it so clearly. A bad feeling rose in his heart. He instantly noticed that… the ghost appeared after the drum sounded.

“Doctor,” Fatty licked his lips, not realising the Doctor’s expression had changed. “Listen to me. The drum was fine. However, after hearing it, the beggar was so scared. He turned to look at Young Master Huang’s place before turning around to stare at me. I thought he wanted to attack me or something. He suddenly reached out to grab my arm. Then, he shook it wildly as he mumbled something.” Fatty described the situation.

“And then?” Jiang Cheng urged.

Fatty scratched his head, “But he couldn’t speak. I couldn’t understand him. However, he looked so anxious.”

Jiang Cheng had a brief estimation. The beggar clearly wanted to tell Fatty something, but Fatty’s comprehension skill was so bad that he couldn’t bridge the communication channel.

“How about I show it to you?” Fatty said.

“Quick!”

Fatty ran forward and then took deliberate steps back. Jiang Cheng looked at him with confusion. Fatty shrugged because that was what the little beggar did. Then, Fatty pointed at his feet before staring at Jiang Cheng.

“Is that it?” Jiang Cheng stared back at him.

Fatty nodded with embarrassment, “Yes.” Seeing the change in Jiang Cheng’s expression, Fatty quickly explained, “Doctor, don’t be like that. I swear that was all he did.”

Jiang Cheng glared at him for his stupidity. The little beggar’s information could save their lives, but Fatty thought he was playing with the mud. However, it was pointless to dwell on this. The sky was darkening. If the little beggar returned that night, Jiang Cheng might be able to glean some clues from him. However, to Jiang Cheng’s annoyance, the little beggar was only kind to Fatty and he only wanted to help Fatty. Plus, it was another unknown if the little beggar would redo this whole sequence later on.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. If everything failed, he had to work together with Xia Meng and tried to use Fatty as bait to capture the little beggar.

Regardless, through this incident, Jiang Cheng had a greater suspicion about the little beggar’s identity. To know the Huang Residence so well at his age. Plus, his age was an issue in itself. A child who could walk about freely at the Huang Residence… And he knew so many secrets about this place. Who… was he?

“Doctor,” Fatty walked over to ask, “It’s about to get dark. Why haven’t they returned?”

It felt like something heard Fatty because the door opened. A cold breeze blew in. Fatty instantly curled up. The open door was like a yawning abyss.

Xia Meng glanced at Fatty as she walked past him. Then, she sat at the table. She poured herself a glass of water and then finished it in a gulp. Fatty blinked and looked outside. Xia Meng was the only person who returned.

“Did you manage to shake them off?” Jiang Cheng poured himself a glass of water as well. He took slow sips.

Xia Meng nodded. “Yes.” Then, she frowned as if something was troubling her, “The water couldn’t reflect the ghosts. You Qi cannot be trusted.” She continued, “Zuo Qing is also very weird. She was with us at first but she disappeared when the sky was darkening.”

“So, were you the last to leave?” Jiang Cheng smiled.

Xia Meng scoffed, “An Xuan is still there. He’s probably trying to figure out a way to escape.”

Fatty had already closed the door. He looked out the window. The night would arrive soon.

“What… are you guys talking about?” He was confused.

Xia Meng finished drinking. She looked at Fatty with derision. The latter withered. “Shi Liaozhi is a ghost,” She suddenly announced.

“What?” Fatty turned to the Doctor subconsciously. He didn’t believe Xia Meng. He only trusted the Doctor.

The Doctor nodded. Fatty shivered. They had just met Shi Liaozhi that afternoon. He was perfectly normal. How could he be a ghost? He wanted to ask if they had gotten that wrong when he remembered that he should never question the Doctor. At least he wouldn’t have died if he had just placed his trust in the Doctor.

Jiang Cheng asked, “Don’t you feel like something is missing today?”

“There was no call for dinner!” Fatty answered instantly.

Indeed, since the afternoon, they hadn’t seen the middle-aged woman who normally would call them for meals.

“There’s no mission today!” Xia Meng was annoyed and cut in, “It’s about to get dark, and the middle-aged woman hasn’t shown up to tell us if there’s a play tonight or not!”

“But, how is that…” Fatty stopped talking. His eyes dimmed. Everything fell into place. At this juncture, someone had to die every night. And the way the ghost killed was to use the disguise of the play… Therefore, why wouldn’t there be a play that night?

Unless… Fatty’s pupils shook. Someone had already died that day!
