Chapter 234: The Cost Of Protecting Someone
Rin took a deep breath, her lungs burning, but she couldn't afford to stop. The men were still coming.
Another attacker rushed toward her, a knife gleaming in his hand. She turned to counter, but her body lagged a second behind.
The blade sliced across her arm, sending a sharp sting through her nerves. Hissing in pain, she staggered back just in time to avoid a second strike.
Without hesitation, she fired a shot into his leg, and the man collapsed with a pained howl.
But the momentary distraction cost her. A gunshot rang out, and she barely managed to duck behind a car as a bullet whizzed past her ear.
"FUCK!" Cursing under her breath, she gritted her teeth, her grip tightening around her gun.
"This stupid body! Why now all of the time!"
Her entire body screamed for rest, her limbs heavy, her vision slightly blurred.
But there was no room for weakness now—not when the enemy was adapting.
Peeking over the hood of the car, she spotted the remaining men regrouping, their weapons aimed and ready.
They weren't just charging at her blindly anymore; they were preparing for a coordinated assault.
This was bad. Her condition was worse.
And the worst part?
She wasn't alone.
From inside the car, Chiyo's panicked voice cut through the chaos.
"Rin… they're coming! Help!"
Rin exhaled sharply, gripping her gun tighter.
While Chiyo was trapped in fear, the enemy was already making their move.
One of the thugs smashed the car window, shards of glass scattering across the seat. Laughing, he reached inside, his fingers brushing against the unlock button.
"Come here, you bitch!" The man sneered, his teeth flashing in a grin. "I'm gonna wrap you up nice and pretty for my boss!"
Chiyo's entire body was trembling, her hands shaking as she clutched the gun Rin had given her.
The phone she had been holding slipped from her grasp, landing on the floor. She had managed to call Enji, and he had promised to come, but she knew he wouldn't arrive in time.
If she didn't act now, she would be taken before help could reach them.
The guy yanked the door open, grinning wider as he loomed over her. Chiyo raised the gun, but her hands trembled too much to aim properly.
Seeing her hesitation, the man laughed mockingly. "You don't have the guts, do you? Go on, kill me! Pull the damn trigger!"
She felt like she was suffocating, her breath heavy and uneven. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears, drowning out all other sounds.
The weight of the gun in her hands felt unbearable. If she didn't do something, if she didn't act now—her baby, her life, everything would be over.
Steeling herself, she shut her eyes as her finger touched the trigger.
BANG!
Warm blood splattered across her face as the thug collapsed in front of her, a hole blown clean through his head.
Chiyo's breath hitched as she stared at the lifeless body, her mind refusing to process what had just happened. She hadn't even fired yet.
"Focus, Chiyo!" Rin's sharp voice yanked her back to reality.
Chiyo turned her head and saw Rin, still standing despite her wounds, her gun smoking from the shot.
"Use your fucking gun! Damn it!" Rin barked, her exhaustion barely hidden beneath her fury.
Chiyo swallowed hard, gripping the pistol tighter. She needs to be alive, to hold on and protect her and her baby.
Rin barely had time to react before a searing pain exploded across her back. The impact sent her staggering forward, her knees nearly buckling beneath her.
She grits her teeth, cursing under her breath. She had been too focused on Chiyo, too distracted, and now she was paying for it.
A bat. Someone had just slammed a bat into her back.
The pain radiated through her spine, but she forced herself to stay upright. There was no time to dwell on it.
Another attacker was already swinging at her side with a metal pipe. She twisted just in time, but the blow still grazed her ribs, sending a jolt of pain through her.
"You still standing, bitch?" One of the men sneered, stepping closer.
He had a jagged scar across his cheek, and his grip on his crowbar tightened as he eyed her with amusement.
"You should've just given up and let us have fun with you."
Rin's lips curled into a smirk despite the pain. "I'd rather die, asshole!" she spit blood on his face.
Then she reached for her gun, but as she pulled the trigger, there was only a hollow click.
'Shit!'
Tossing it aside, she reached down, fingers brushing against the knife hidden in her boot. With a swift motion, she pulled it free, flipping it in her grip.
The thugs exchanged glances, then grinned. One of them let out a laugh. "Really? You think you can take us all on with that little thing?"
"Guess we'll find out," Rin muttered under her breath.
The first man lunged. Rin ducked low, her knife flashing as she slashed across his thigh. He howled in pain, stumbling backward.
Another came at her with a bat, swinging for her head. She barely dodged, the wind from the strike brushing past her cheek.
With a sharp pivot, she drove her knife into his shoulder, twisting it before pulling away.
But she was too slow. The moment she turned, another fist crashed into her stomach. The breath was knocked from her lungs, her body recoiling from the force.
She stumbled back, barely managing to stay on her feet.
She shook her head, trying to clear the dizziness that threatened to consume her. She had taken too many hits already.
Her body was screaming at her to stop, to just collapse, but she couldn't. Not yet.
A pipe struck her leg, sending her to one knee. She gasped, gripping the knife tighter.
Someone grabbed her from behind, thick arms locking around her neck. She struggled, her fingers clawing at his grip, but her strength was fading fast.
"Got you now," the man growled.
Rin snarled, twisting her body and ramming her elbow into his ribs. His grip loosened just enough for her to spin out of his hold.
She plunged her knife into his side, then kicked him away. But before she could recover, another bat slammed into her shoulder, sending her sprawling to the ground.
She coughed violently, the taste of blood flooding her mouth. Her vision blurred, her limbs shaking as she tried to push herself up.
But she couldn't. Her body refused to move because she had another woman she needed to protect and this time she wouldn't fail! Never again!
She then gets up and stabs him with a knife, making him down in an instant.
'Just one more, one more person, and it's over.'
The last man standing towered over her, a crowbar in his hands. He grinned, raising it high above his head.
"Had a good run, didn't you? But this is where it ends."
Rin clenched her teeth, forcing her trembling arms to move. If she was going down, she would go down fighting—
BANG!
A gunshot shattered the night air. The man in front of her stiffened, his eyes wide in shock before he crumpled to the ground.
Rin's breath hitched. Her vision swam, her body teetering on the edge of unconsciousness.
But before the darkness took her, one thing was clear.
She was finally able to protect someone this time.
