Chapter 117: Chapter 117: The Oriole Appears
In the dense forest, Orochimaru and Kabuto darted swiftly between the trees. Kabuto glanced back, observing the stillness behind them, and said, "Lord Orochimaru, it seems the scorpion has not pursued us further."
"It appears our attack inflicted more damage on him than expected," Orochimaru replied. However, his tone turned sour as he added, "Unfortunately, this body's rejection has grown worse, leaving me unable to capitalize on the opportunity."
It had been three years since Orochimaru had fused with the body of "Hanyumaru." Unable to wait for Sasuke's body and with his original vessel deteriorating rapidly, Orochimaru had been forced to transfer his consciousness into Hanyumaru's body—a mediocre temporary choice.
Over the past three years, the rejection between his soul and the borrowed body had worsened, making it increasingly difficult to maintain control. The exertion of the recent battle had drained him further, leaving him irritable and in pain.
"I just need to hold on... Sasuke is within my grasp," Orochimaru thought, forcibly calming himself. Now was not yet the perfect time to make Sasuke's body his own.
From the corner of his eye, Orochimaru noticed Kabuto clutching his chest, his expression strained. "How are you holding up, Kabuto?" Orochimaru asked.
"The venom is potent, Lord Orochimaru," Kabuto admitted, pressing his hand against the wound inflicted by Sasori's senbon. "The medicine is suppressing its effects, but the pain is... unpleasant."
Orochimaru chuckled softly. "It seems Sasori has been preparing for a confrontation with me. We need to return to the base as soon as possible. Your condition cannot be left unchecked."
Kabuto nodded, his voice tinged with concern. "Based on my calculations, the retarding potion will only last about a day. We need to return to the base to develop the antidote immediately."
Orochimaru's face darkened. "We must also move quickly in case Sasori recovers and resumes his pursuit. And..."
He trailed off, his sharp mind recalling a key detail. As a former member of the Akatsuki, Orochimaru knew they always worked in pairs. Despite the battle, Sasori's partner had been conspicuously absent, an unnerving mystery that left Orochimaru uneasy.
"Could it be that blond brat from before?" Orochimaru remembered Deidara vividly—the explosive artist who had flattened one of his bases during their last encounter. "If it's him, things could get messy..."
But Orochimaru reassured himself with a sly smile. "No matter. I have my own trump card waiting."
The pair pushed on, crossing rivers and sprinting through the forest until they reached the barren expanse of a Gobi desert. They navigated through rocky outcrops until they arrived at an unassuming hill.
Kabuto stepped forward, forming hand seals. With a rumbling noise, the rock wall split apart, revealing a staircase descending into the earth.
"Let's go," Orochimaru ordered, leading the way down. Kabuto followed, and the rock wall slid shut behind them, erasing any trace of their passage.
Not long after, Sasori, standing on his iron-sand surfboard, stopped a short distance from the rocky hill. Behind him, Team Seven came to a halt as well.
Jumping off the surfboard, Kirito pointed toward the rocky hill. "That's Orochimaru's base. Sasuke is inside. Apart from Orochimaru, Sasuke, and Kabuto, there's no one else."
"Sasuke..." Naruto muttered, his fists clenching with determination. He was ready to charge forward when Kakashi placed a hand on his shoulder, stopping him.
"Calm down, Naruto," Kakashi said with a calm smile. "Don't forget the plan."
Naruto hesitated, glancing at Sakura, who nodded in agreement. "Naruto, we've come this far. We won't let Sasuke slip away again, but we need to stick to the plan."
With a sigh, Naruto relented. Kakashi turned to Kirito and said, "It's all yours, Kirito."
Kirito nodded. "Stay hidden for now. We'll step in once the battle reaches its climax."
After Team Seven retreated to a concealed vantage point, Sasori leaped from his surfboard. He raised a hand, and the iron sand coalesced into a massive spinning drill-like cone.
With a flick of his wrist, the drill smashed into the rocky hill, boring a massive hole straight into the hidden base.
Boom! Boom! The earth shook as debris flew everywhere. Just as Sasori prepared to strike again, a giant serpent burst from the opening, deflecting the iron drill with its head.
From behind the snake, Orochimaru emerged with a smirk. "After all these years, your sense of smell is as sharp as ever, Sasori."
Sasori's expression remained impassive. "And you're still as slippery as ever, like a loach. Hard to kill and always running."
"Heh... I won't be running this time," Orochimaru retorted. "In fact, I've brought you a very suitable opponent. Sasuke."
Out from the shadows stepped Sasuke, his black hair and eyes stark against the white kimono he wore. A Kusanagi sword hung at his waist as he regarded Sasori with an unreadable expression.
Sasori's demeanor shifted subtly. He retracted the iron sand into a defensive position and extended the steel cable from his abdomen, ready for battle.
"Sasori is a member of the Akatsuki, just like Itachi," Orochimaru said, his voice dripping with temptation. "Defeating him might even provide you with information about Itachi."
At the mention of Itachi, Sasuke's blood-red Sharingan activated, the three tomoe spinning as he drew his sword. "Good. This will show me how far I've come compared to that man."
With no warning, Sasori launched a massive iron-sand cylinder directly at Sasuke.
Zzzzzz... The sound of a thousand chirping birds echoed as lightning coursed through Sasuke's arm and into his sword.
Clang! Sasuke dashed forward, cutting clean through the iron cylinder with his lightning-infused blade. Without pausing, he closed the distance to Sasori, his sword raised to strike.
